A simplified explanation of why soldiers of World War 2 lacked body armor. The First World War set the precedent of shrapnel helmets due to the fragmentation of artillery shells causing deaths via fragments impacting the head. With the expectation of a potential second war to come, new shrapnel helmets were designed during the inter-war period to improve upon the old designs. So that's why they had helmets like that, but what about armor, you may ask. Well, ironically, the issue primarily came from the old mindset of how metallic armor from back in the musket age of guns were of no use in defending against such a weapon as well as a lack of desire to persue a project that might end up as a money sink. Proper body armor would not come to fruition until the Cold War where the most influential and industrially developed nations were able to experiment on the creation of new equipment of war without the fear of a new war breaking out any time soon. The first American design for body armor in the Cold War that was widely used was flak armor, and it was used in the Vietnam War.
Fun fact: The Germans developted and created the first gas powered jet taking the Allies by suprise "It just flew past us like we werent moving" -Allied Pilot.
Yeah, but it's still impressive from a technological standpoint, as no one else could actually mass produce fighter jets. They also made a rocket powered jet as well
