Dealers are only pissed because this is trending on tik tok right now so everyone talking about it. What's crazy to think, snap on wants 180 for the plier set, cat wants 100 for it, and cat is still making a good profit margin off the sale I guarantee it or the price would not be the price it is.

Cp I work at a Cat plant as a Industrial Mechanic. Everything you said is 100 percent true. We can get tools out of the tool crib for work at the plant. You can tell instantly a Cat branded tool is Snap On just by the the way it is stamped into the tool. There is quite a mix of Snap
On,Klien, williams and China made. There Cat tool catlog is full of Snap on tools that are branded Cat. But buyer beware also China made and other countries. I ordered a set of Cat pry bars that said Made in the USA on the package but they were stamped made in China. The company buys all the tools so know big loss.

When I worked in a CAT manufacturing plant, all of our electric power tools were from Stanley Industrial. From the DC Torques down to the electric screwdrivers. I did see some Dewalt impact drivers for some assembly applications though. Edit. We did use Precision Instruments torque wrenches in manual applications.

1st cp i love you and your videos. 2nd you are not just paying more for the “snap on “tools because of there name. You are paying for the warranty and the time of the tool truck person who is driving around selling it to you. It is a service that often gets overlooked and not talked about . Yes you will pay more off the truck but you can also make payments on it where you would have to pay 100% for the tool outright from the beginning.
Drive and purchase and have to deal with warranty and taking it back to wherever you bought it from to begin with . Its the service of passing a tool to a person at your shop and them passing you back another new tool for you to use immediately. Time is money

Great information on the rebranding market. Interesting on the CAT 3 piece plier set, as well the impacts. I just don't have a CAT dealer close enough to make a trip for the purchase and then a return trip for warranty (if needed). For me, I haven't paid the list price on anything Snap On or MAC for years. For me, the time saved with the truck operator is more time for me to be working, making $$. Lastly.......the tool company makes the tools, the truck operator makes the warranty.

The last time I read it, the snap on warranty stated that the warranty applied only for professional use. Retire or do something else, break your big bucks snap-on products working on your own car, and you could have zero warranty.
I have plenty, and paid a lot like everyone...it pissed me off to read that. I shop around a lot more now, and rarely buy snap-on anymore. I love flea markets and get some there occasionally, and it's fun. Doesn't get you a break from work, though, like the truck.
Well, you can still check out the truck.

As a non pro thank you for the info. I like to support MiUSA when I can and for a fair price I went with a few sets of sockets from my local CAT dealer while they are still available.
Just a little higher than Harbor Freight’s ICON line in terms of price but supports USA manufacturing. Also lets me avoid the overpriced stuff at Home Depot and Lowes. But to be clear I have no issue with harbor freight personally since im not a pro and dont necessarily need the Snap On quality.

    • @AToolWithTools
      @AToolWithTools 2 місяці тому

I believe it's very possible they knew but it wasn't widespread info for a long time. Lately it seems to come up more and more online, as a way to get Snap-on stuff for much cheaper and without either having to chase a truck or bite the full list price if you're not working a place a truck comes to, and for those who are already serviced by a truck, a way to save money. Lots of money.
The truck model is predicated on "these are only available through us" with some of the companies also doing online sales but expecting full list, which would push folks more toward the trucks. Now the word is getting spread more that the exclusivity isn't entirely true, and at least has the potential to interrupt the dealer's bottom line when folks pick a different middleman now that they know of that middleman. The territory exclusivity goes out the window, the tool exclusivity pitch goes out the window.

So I on look y bug stuff that’s cheap or probably won’t have to warranty. Biggest advantage of my Mac guy is warranty. I used to work for a cat dealer years ago most all of used snap on or Mac tools and boxes. Warranty was such a pain even working there.

If you get a torque multiplier that has the round head and long ratchet handle the snap on, Cat. Mac, Proto, and a couple others were all made by gear tronix in Massachusetts. And Cat was not any cheaper than Snap On plus you had to deal with some walking talking foreskin at Cat parts counter. ( At least the Cat dealer nearest me was useless as far as parts go)

    Hello again, CP and Sunny
Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I admit I knew about the rebranding. I just didn't know at what extent it got too 😕 Just to be sure I understand. Cat Tools could be rebranded Snap-on Tools. How do I make certain I am getting what I am paying for! Again thank you 😆

I work at a mine. We have Snap-On, Cat, Williams and a lot of other brands in my department. The Cat wrenches are really nice actually those thick bean ones that have a reduction before the open end. And we have CAT impact sockets that are identical to the snap on’s they just say CAT. Including the pinned universals.

The cat tools i will say are alright but alot of them arent really a deal when alot of them are mac prices. Cat does seriously lack alot of stuff youd need. Its alright for basic stuff like ratchets and wrenches but the rest doesnt exist

I recently scored a new 100 tooth stubby flex head ratchet from Snappy for free, when I bought my new 40" slide top cart. I'd gladly trade it for a 'Cat' one. If id paid the $135 retail price, I would theow a fit. Fucking junk. I was told" it has to break in". Lol

And resale just isnt as good

People just don’t understand that there may well be differences in metallurgy or other specifications that may reduce costs as well.
In fairness, Mac isn’t exactly the same thing because they’re owned by a larger company that owns those other companies. I’ve lost count of how many there are under the SBD umbrella. Craftsman, Mac, Stanley, B&D, USAG, Facom, Dewalt, and god knows who else. And in Mac’s case, it seems to be partly a case of using different names based on what part of the world’s market they’re selling to.

Unpopular opinion: perhaps they're all manufactured as first quality, and they don't cost even nearly as much as what they're gonna charge you. Snap-on is posting Apple-like margins and throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at shareholders annually. Their bottom line is consistently over double what is considered a "normal and healthy" margin for a corporation. And they're making that money selling to dealers, already ripping them off. Now the dealers have to make their expenses (including getting scalped on their inventory) plus whatever they consider a livable salary off of us.
Snap-on themselves have posted a decent bit of videos and such showing their processes and we can eke a little more info from that. For example, taking a shine to automation. Each cold-forming socket machine can make a socket that's already over halfway finished (turned from coil fed in to an unbranded socket that already has the square and hex formed in them), and it averages a socket produced per *second* while simultaneously cutting American jobs out of the equation.
Their cold-formed pliers also have automation involved, with the "forging" being automatic. Blank goes in, pliers halves that have already been roughed blocked finished and trimmed come out. That's the job of 2 operators gone, saving money, without passing the savings on.
They're a business, not a charity, and they exist to make profit sure. That's reasonable. But my gosh you should listen to the recording or read the transcripts of quarterly shareholder conference calls. The CEO talks money a lot of course but does seem to have at least a bit of passion about what they're making. Then the shareholders, a lot of big faceless investment firms, get to ask questions. Money. Money. Money money money money money. No passion whatsoever for the product. And the shareholders are the ones who actually OWN the company, so no matter how much passion their C-suite has for the products, they have to ultimately satisfy their owners.
Snap-on wants up to a list of $40 for a replacement hard handle. Obviously the dealer isn't gonna charge you that, but that's crazy money. It's injection-molded plastic with a stamping, you know how much that costs to make? Less than a dollar. Or let's take a screwdriver. $30 for Snap-on, $10-11 for Mayhew, $10 for Klein, $5 for Tekton. All made in USA, Tekton even also has the extra overmold step like Instincts do. Differences in metallurgy used sure, but not enough to want up to 3x as much for like 3 ounces of actual metal along with a very very very cheap-to-produce plastic handle.
