  • After the world cycling championships i needed to get out on the bike and this route was perfect for me. The good thing about this was that it was about 50% off road on the forth and Clyde canal past Stockingfield bridge and out towards Kirkintilloch and Twechar. At Twechar I explored Bar Hill roman fort and after that had to navigate a stretch of busy road in Kilsyth to get to the quieter roads like the Tak-Ma-Doon road that takes us over the Kilsyth hills. This is an excellent climb that takes you over to Carron valley reservoir and past the Loup of Fintry waterfall before heading over the Crow road to Lenoxtown where we see the Robert Miller mural and onwards to Milton of Campsie and back to Kirkintilloch using the Strathkelvin railway path that connects to Glasgow via the forth and Clyde canal.
This cycle was my favorite this year so far and was a very enjoyable day out. Was expecting to be out for four and a half hours and that turned out to be seven and a half. My strava didn't record the ride properly and that was probably down to the battery being very low on my phone for the last hour of my ride.
This cycle was so good for my mental health and was really needed as on the lead up to and during the world championships so much was going on and I was working on a couple of projects with deadlines. This video will also be good to view during the winter as a reminder of being out for hours cycling during the summer months and light nights.

Fantasic! the scenery is magical but you add to it with the drone shots and the editing. 57 yrs I've lived in this city and I don't know ANY of it, however you inspired me to take the family cycling roon Cumbrae last weekend, great fun but sore bum! Cheers!

A safer way to get onto the tak me doon is to cycle further along the canal to the dullatur Rd Bridge. Swing a left onto the Kilsyth Rd cycle through the Colzium park and brings you third way up the tak near the quarry. A lot less traffic. Great video.

I love doing that route but I always go down the Tak🤣. I went up Croy Hill earlier this year to make a film but never thought to go to Barr Hill. Don’t fancy getting the bike over those gates but there are tracks further up in the woodland.
It’s a really nice gravel loop around the Carron Reservoir I’ve done it from Stirling taking in Lewis Hill and the North Third.
It’s hard to believe that all that lovely countryside is a stones throw from Glasgow. Roads look great now they have been laid, need to get myself back round there again.

You can ride through Carron Valley Resi on the left bank, it comes out at the carpark at the far side of dam....just maybe not on 25mm slicks tho .
