watching this reminds me of my first few years in working life at CBD.. felt so exciting walking through raffles place with all the suits in the morning... the smell of perfume, experiencing the adrenaline... felt like i could be making it rich one day in SGX... after my usual teh in the morning, then grab my mop and officially started work ( i was an office building cleaner)
Thanks for bringing us along on your journey too, makes me remember when I quit my first job! Super brave and smart of you to recognize the job/industry isn't what you want and to take steps to find somewhere you'll be happier, all the best in your next role!!
really authentic feelings & somewhat relatable for everyone, interesting ways of filming it as well, i love this! what a way to discover a fellow singaporean creator.
Same situation over here!! I graduated last year and left my previous company at around the 8th month mark haha, the difference in being an intern vs a full-timer really hits different. I hope things will turn out nicely for you, jiayous!
ah hello fellow fresh grad 🧑🎓 honestly so true the first full time gig is super different..suddenly everything feels very real. thanks for your comment friend! Props to you for moving when you felt like u needed to and hope for a fulfilling future ahead for u
recently quit my first job after 8 months and it has been one of my best decisions! interned there previously before landing an ft role at a different dept, but i quickly found out it wasn’t for me; health issues and a difficult manager solidified my decision to leave. it’s been great having this time to rest and indulge in my interests as well as self-care~ all the best to you and everyone here too in our future journeys!
Ugh I'm sorry you had a difficult boss..truly having good direct superiors makes ALL the difference, even a bad job with a nice boss can make it bearable but the other way around just sucks. Loveee this period of rest that you've been able to have, take it without any guilt because u deserve it! Hope you recharge well for your next chapter in life hehe
Such a beautiful reflection you drew from the experience. I felt super encouraged by it as a fresh grad currently in a job I feel I am punching above my weight for yet pushing myself to go through with for at least a year just to prove to myself I can last. There are many difficult days, the journey feels quite lonely, and sometimes I question if it is worth it or not but I’m taking it day by day so I don’t feel too overwhelmed. Still trying to figure it out 🙃 thank you for your video! I’m looking forward to the day when I can finally quit and look back with gratefulness
Funnily enough I too wanted to stay in this gig here for at least a year...well, that didn't turn out, but there was so much to be had from the experience. I'm sure that in your journey even though it sounds difficult you're quietly gaining skills + knowledge that's gonna come in handy without you even knowing. Even a bad gig is a good story LOL. You're not alone as a fresh grad trying to get it together, we all are- we got this
Recently I also quitted from my first full time job that I had in 2.5yrs and really bring back joys and memories ~ still adapting to my new position and challenges ahead 💪🙏
i wouldn't say i hated my first job as hate is a strong word, but i disliked it. my last day was a bittersweet one, knowing that although i am leaving this place and looking forward to my next position and challenge, i am leaving my colleagues who brought me joy on days where i struggled. this place, which brought me to places of worry, also showed me what it really is to have a full-time job, where we must be accountable for every action we take, and for that, i was grateful for it. all the best for your next role, and may it be a better fit for you.
@@TheDrumdude21 relate to a lot of what you said: I knew this job probably wasn’t for me in the long term, but it was so valuable as my first full time gig and really easing into corporate life. Proud of you for taking the next step for yourself and thank u for sharing part of your story!
I am a 29 year old who has worked in the tech industry for the past 4 years. Recently quit my full-time job at the same time as you, and it's just been a wild ride (am unemployed now) but pursuing what I want to pursue now ! Your content is quite interesting and all the best!
thanks for sharing James! if anything this vid helped me feel much less alone knowing how everyone else has walked away from their first gig at some point- and most of us are happier because. I know you'll find something soon and you'll be better for it :) appreciate your kind words
Was on a similar journey as you and left my first job less than 2 years in to do my own thing haha I think a lot of young adults in high stress industries often have the same experiences but feel lost and stuck so I’m really glad you made this video (and included your self-reflections) as it shows that priorities and goals in life are ever-changing, that there is always a possibility to pivot even if you just started and made me (and probably a lot of others our age) feel a lot less lonely in our beginning chapters of adulting :) ATB for your future, rooting for u!
@@jez9251 so true. You literally reiterated what I said in my other most recent vid (on job hunting)- we’re almost certainly going to evolve in terms of goals, direction, interests etc. and that’s okay! You’re brave for taking that step to chart your own path (sounds like a non traditional job?) and I hope that worked out for you. Thanks so much for your comment. This vid may have resonated with more people than I thought and that in turn, makes me feel less lonely too 🙌🏼
I resigned my first full time office job when there was internal change and restructuring within the company that I'm working in too. Thought I could hold onto the drastic changes for a long time, but I just couldn't stand it anymore and I was so far away from home, so I left and went back to spend time with family back home in Malaysia
Hello friend! Honestly sounds amazing for you, I'm very glad you had the courage to get out of that job to pursue something that sounds more meaningful to you and that you get to be with your family- it's super important to me too, I'd miss my fam alot if I was away for too long. Cheers to restarting!! It's your year!
Seeing this really puts things to perspective of how blessed / spoilt / entitled we are in this generation. Most of our parents / grandparents did not have this luxury to quit jobs to figure things out. The mindset is different then and now. It was all hard work and pure grit and never giving up. We have to be more appreciative of our parents as they've gone through hardships to give us a better life.
I agree, a lot of them didn’t have the choice to quit and explore different options as young people. My parents worked hard and still do to give me a life they couldn’t have for themselves and I am always grateful for that + the love they show me in supporting my decisions & independence of choice.
I also left my job a while ago, last day 14 June. I worked around the same area as you that time too haha. Wish you all the best on your next step and future, fighting!!
Hi there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings! Just wondering, how were you able to get into finance (private equity) with your comms background? Am thinking of trying out too.
Hey! I actually made a whole video on it before (how I worked in fintech with no finance background), you can check that out for starters. As for PE specifically I think it happened that I had a good mix of writing skills across business/corporate to lifestyle gigs so getting a diverse breadth is important, that’s how I got into “marketing” for investment solutions. It’s also good to demonstrate genuine interest and willingness to learn as people w no formal finance training. You will be expected to become more familiar and knowledgeable in the industry as time goes by, but soft skills (easy to work with, excellent communication, great work ethic and grit) will be some of the top things to get you through the door in adjacent non fin roles
currently job hunting as a fresh grad and came across this vid. really made me ponder what i'll be doing just a year from now. will i be doing a job that i like? would i already have quit my first job and into my second? this is definitely the period of my life where i've felt the most lost but i'm sure i'll get through it. thanks for sharing!
I had those exact questions too as a baby fresh grad and honestly they can't ever be answered until you live it out yourself- and that's what life is about, the unpredictability of it all. Being lost/confused is soooo normal at this age (I wish I knew)! I'm still lost in the sauce some days but with more time passing I feel like things get clearer and more sure. You got this, there's still so much ahead of us :)
Was sent this by a friend, can't believe I almost (unknowingly) made it into your video! Was there for acai day :o i see some of my tech colleagues though :P
hey lydia! really enjoyed and appreciate your honest feelings and thoughts towards your employment journey. Because of this, i would probably vlog about my journey too! 😀
not necessarily- though many do, and I agree our culture is built around cutthroat business, OT, and hustling, but life is also made up of our own personal choices. I'm excited about life in general and seeing what's to come for me, amidst the hardship and strife
