This is the score -- presumably handwritten by a copyist or Gavin Greenaway himself -- for Illuminations: Reflections of Earth, the opening piece of music to Disney World's nightly firework show in Epcot. The score appears to be a near final draft; the structure is identical to the final piece, and only a few tracks and flourishes seem to be missing.
As a composer of almost 20 years now, I keep coming back to this piece over and over to marvel at its orchestration, textures, rhythms, melodies, and energy. To me, it strikes the perfect balance between complex and simple; it manages to be accessible without being trite. It is the piece I so desperately wish I had written myself. I think it is one of the best pieces of orchestral music written in the last few decades.

Brings absolute tears to my eyes. Both my parents were cast members, and had a lot of block-out dates for the parks. More often than not, Epcot was almost always available cause it was considered the least popular park. They would get my sister and I in and we would just about always stay and see this show. So many memories. Thank you for this!

Who downvotes this? Honestly - one of the most heart pounding, inspirational pieces of music I have ever heard. Was so sad to see it leave EPCOT.

Such an underrated score of music! Love it since I've heard it being part of the Night of the Proms 2006 Ouverture in Antwerpen.

I always thought the last section was 7/4. I knew it was in seven, but now I know it's actually 7/8 with the eight note getting the beat.
This is awesome! I can tell the synthesizer parts are not written into the score pads/orchestration when it was recorded by a live orchestra. Often, composers tell the copyists like Joann Kane Music not to copy pre-recorded synthesizer tracks. In that sense, it would not be necessary to write the synth parts onto the sheet music when you have it done in your home studio.
Yes, that’s correct. Almost All percussion was recorded prior to strings/ ww/ brass session. Only timpani and perhaps few other instruments were added (tambourine) during session. Snare was already pre- recorded, so were cymbals, piatti, gran cassa, all auxiliary perc., mallets, synths, guitars, sound effects, swooshes, MIDI percussion (all those “punches” to beef up accentuation are usually done electronically).
Speaking of Disney (I am a pianist/composer here) - in the same manner music for Fantasmic was also recorded. I played for 7 years Tarzan Rocks! show at the Animal Kingdom (1999-2006). We had a multi-track original soundtrack with LSO separated with all effects, all instruments on separate tracks for surround sound. We also had a full score - same exact story : only ww/brass/timpani/stags were notated in the score (from JoAnn Kane).

Lots and lots of production scores/parts are handwritten, as is a lot of theatrical music. Nowadays, you see more typeset stuff because we have packages like Finale and Sibelius that make it cheap to do, but there's still plenty of stuff that's handwritten because it's fast and easy for the composer/arranger/copyists, and doesn't have to look nice - it just has to be (mostly) legible, and in some conductor scores I've seen the beats don't even line up right in the measures across parts. :-D Almost all of the parts I've played in decades of being in pit orchestras were handwritten, so those are actually easier for me to read now than typeset parts because I'm so used to it. You'll also find a lot of really high-end film work is handwritten as well (like a LOT of the original John Williams recording scores).
