  • Today buyers take for granted that the Chevrolet Corvette is GM's flagship car and has a base price in luxury car territory. However this wasn't always the case. Watch this video to find out which Corvette was the first to have a luxury car price.

I remember in 1982 my brother and I were driving his black on black 81 corvette across the trans Canada hwy up in Saskatchewan....when in the rearview mirror a car appeared. As much as we tried, the car just kept getting closer and closer....and despite me having my foot to the floor....this thing just swung out and with seemingly no effort started to pass us.
I looked to see this demon car and it was like a mid 1960’s Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser....with an old guy sitting in the passenger seat..reading the paper...and his wife behind the wheel..with curlers in her hair...sipping a coffee. Then she decided to stop fooling around....gunned it and disappeared well in front of us into the horizon. Our Vette was like a whipped little hound so we pulled into a gas station ahead and gave it a rest. These were were NOT...fast cars in any way....you may have been led to believe.

I had an 82. Very reliable but you had to do a few things to make it a little quicker and responsive. Open up the aircleaner and remove the ram air flap door. Either get the 700R4 kitted if its in good shape or install a performance stage 2. Install 3.54 or 3.73 gears and a DUI distributor. Split the exhaust. Lastly, a 1984 Corvette ECM and performance chip. Then you'll have an 82 vette that will run 14's in the quarter mile and more fun to drive.

I love the look of the new C8 but the C3 is still my overall favorite body style. I had a 79 in "Corvette Red" with a black leather interior and 4 speed manual and of course, T-tops. It was a blast to drive, surprisingly comfortable on the highway and a good daily driver as well. My favorite part about owning a Corvette was the view of that long hood with those shark fin fenders from behind the wheel. Even though it was not the best performing car I've ever owned it was overall, the most fun to drive.

I own a 96 CE, and I am still jealous looking at the aesthetics of the '82 CE. The lines of the C3 are unsurpassed, imo. My front fender flares don't stick up as much as this unit. The performance on the other hand is night and day in the C$'s favor, again, imo. I love it. I believe when you by a Vette, you're buying into the heritage of the models built, and still owning a piece of each future generation going forward. It's a Heritage Car if there is such a thing.

It has a lot of serious upgrade to bring it into the 21st century. 550hp 427 small block with FAST multiport EFI system, race built 700r4, keyless entry, everything converted from vacuum to electric, retained power accessories, dynamat sound deadening, Magnaflow exhaust, rack and pinion, upgraded brakes and suspension, and premium Kenwood sound system. A few years back, my brother brought to light having an estranged, illegitamate son... who liked Corvettes--like me--and favored the early-80s models. So, to connect with him, my brother bought a Collector's Edition that we called "Rarity"... as it what was decided to have on her vanity plates.
Driving it myself, I couldn't help feel how she was special, even for a secial model. When she had an issue with her fuel system, and I was turned to to deal with it, it was the first car I ever looked to & followed procedure of in it's factory service manual, just because I felt serving her deserved special attention... even with the simple stuff.
Sadly, because she was more of a showpony and keepong a car my brother couldn't use regularly was expensive, we sold Rarity to a collector in Germany. Me & my brother still each have one of her plates, and to this day I can't think about the irony of how this car... my "unicorn", if you will... shared name with a cartoon unicorn I've seen one Saturday morning. Or how every little blonde girl that saw it "Oooo...! and "Ahhh...!" over her, like she was an actual unicorn.

What should be noted as a big reason the base price kept rising was the double digit inflation we were experiencing up until the great recession that hit in 1981 that threw thousands in the auto industry out of work in the massive layoffs and caused the housing market to tank. I bought a new Trans AM in 1981 and was shocked that after optioning it out the price topped $10,000.00. Six years earlier had bought a heavily optioned Camaro for less than $5,000.00.

NEWSFLASH! There was a 55mph national speed limit in 1982 (thanks to Jimma Carter). Not to mention ridiculous insurance rates. Really no need to produce tire scorchers back then.
Very restrictive fuel economy and smog standards went into effect long before computer technology made it possible to get both mileage AND performance out of a piston engine.
The good news is: An LS, modern trans and ECM will easily bring a late C3 into the modern age. Unless you have a pristine, original, Collector’s Edition or ‘78 Pace Car, you have nothing to lose by LS swapping a 77 and up C3.

We Bought an 82 Z28 with the 305 Crossfire in 82, After 10k miles it started acting up, in & out of the dealer. When it was on, it was on for its day with an active opening dual cowl hood for 82 only... The Vett was beautiful & fast in 82 but any that pushed them into high miles had problems with the crossfire as well...' GM's solution was to run smart 4 barrels I believe on all performance vehicles until Tuned Port was perfected due to Crossfire being a flop...

You could see the C-3 body style from outer space and still know it's a corvette, there was nothing produced even close to its unique body style. The C-4 never came close to the C-3's overall good looks and extreme body flair but that was before a low drag coefficient ruled the roost and cars seemed to pretty much look all the same in no time at all.

Yep, the 68 to 82 Vettes are the best looking ones ever, and the wheels on the 82 collectors edition were the style I wanted to put on my 73 I had in the late 80's, I also planned on putting an 80-82 door to door on the front for it's improved aerodynamics but keep the open engine compartment vents on the fenders, but as usual hard times hit and I had to sell it.

I saw another video about the last year for the C3. The performance numbers were laughable. My bone stock 2016 Challenger SXT (3.6L V6) outperforms the 82 Vette. I am not bragging (base Mustangs and Cameros even quicker), just saying that it was really sad. When discussing performance, late 70 to early 80 cars can only be compared to each other. It was automotive performance dark age. Before this automobiles had been getting quicker and faster since the invention of the car. With the event of emission controls high gas prices performance went backwards. After sometime there was a recovery and by the 2010s even base cars are surpassing the performance of early 80s supercars.

This guy I know bought a new Vette so he would be seen as cool [which he wasn't]. He constantly complained that only guys waved at him and gave him the thumbs up, but not even one girl turned to look. I laughed at him every day and suggested to him that maybe he should switch teams. That pissed him off even more. I still laugh about that...

I have one. It has only 24,700 miles on it too. It was in a show room for 21 years and is now in my possession. I would trade it for the right C3 Convertible.
Why? Mine is so MINT, I'm actually afraid to drive it around....too many IDIOTS out there driving around. A "restored" Corvette Convert is fine with me. I'm in
    western Oregon, near Salem.

I smoked one of these in my lightly modded beater 91 MR2 turbo I had a decade ago. These vettes were not fast at all even considering it was 82 because my MR2 wasn’t that fast either. Maybe a 6.5 second 0-60 or so but good enough to beat this.

    • @jorgphilip
      @jorgphilip 4 роки тому +2

@@PedroParkerD Yes the GNX was quicker, and I believe you also Fit Fogey. My stock 1969 Cutlass is quicker than this 1982 Corvette as well, but we need to look at these cars in their proper perspective. From 1975-1985 USA production cars started bottoming out and then rebounding.
The quickest production C3s from the original muscle car era were far more powerful and quicker than this Corvette as well as a GNX. Still for 1982 this Corvette was the quickest car money could buy USA showroom production new.
