Nemo Disco 15 Review | BEST Sleeping Bag For Bigger Folks | BEST Sleeping Bag for SIDE SLEEPING

  • In this video, I’ll review the Nemo Equipment Disco 15 sleeping bag. I also discuss packing a sleeping bag for backpacking, down sleeping bag care, and plenty more. After trying several sleeping bags over the years, this is, at least for me, the best sleeping bag for backpacking. The spoon shape of the Nemo Disco 15 sleeping bag makes it the best sleeping bag for side sleepers and stomach sleepers. The Nemo Riff (800 FP down) and the Nemo Forte (synthetic) also have the spoon shape.

    Great video! Love love love my Nemo Disco (mine’s the 30 degree). I love the space for sidesleeping. I’ve got a lightweight down blanket that I stuff inside with me for more softness and takes up some dead air space for more warmth if needed. Also, bc I have a single walled tent and I’m condensation-phobic on my down, I can throw a lightweight synthetic quilt on top, for some warmth and to save my down from getting wet. Take care!

      @WanderingSwitchback  Рік тому +2

      Great tip on the down blanket! I have one from Get Out Gear that they sent me that would be good for something like what you've described. I do the same thing with the synthetic quilt (well, old 50° sleeping bag) when it's gonna be cold. It does a good job. I'm glad you love the Disco! Good question, I don't have any personal experience with Zenbivy, so I can't really speak to it. I've heard they have great products. I believe their sleep system is heavier than this, but also more versatile. I know that may not be super helpful!

      My son has the 15 degree Disco (tall male version as he's over 6ft) and loves it. He had to add a blanket when we were actually sleeping in 15 degrees, but it was just a cheap fleece blanket. He is a side sleeper and the time we shared a tent, he accordioned up and was just as comfortable as could be. I have a Zenbivy and love it as well. Sleeping bags make me feel claustrophobic when I'm cinching down the hood and then try and roll in the bag. The Zenbivy, I can tuck my head under the hood and "pull the covers up" and still feel like I can move about just fine. You can also control the sense of tightness by clipping it in or leaving it loose. The quilt by itself seems to weigh about the same as most quilts on the market, it's the sheet with the hood and side shield that makes it heavier. We've never switched bags though, so I can't give you an absolute comparison.

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback  Рік тому +1

      Hi! The measurements should be available online, but I've actually started using a quilt now, and I like how much more roomy it is. It's not the right option for everyone, but it's another one to consider. I have this video about why I like it here: ua-cam.com/video/b9sxM0eoyP4/v-deo.html But if you're going with a bag, one of Nemo's spoon-shaped bags is the way to go!

  • @angieui
    @angieui 2 роки тому +1

    I'm still learning and I really appreciate your review! I'm surprised that your bag is for such a low temperature rating, but you use it for weather that is triple the temperature rating degrees. Is that normal? I was about to buy a 35 degree bag thinking I'd be plenty warm!

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback  2 роки тому +3

      Most bags and quilts will be rated for temps about 15-20 degrees lower than temps in which they will actually keep you comfortable. I have a more in-depth video about choosing a bag or quilt here: ua-cam.com/video/4q9GhD0k9Ts/v-deo.html
      Your sleeping pad will matter a lot, too. Look for a high r-value to keep you warm. ua-cam.com/video/29rijk4d9Aw/v-deo.html
      In short, yes, this is common, and it will also be impacted by how you sleep. I generally tend to sleep warm, but I still need a lot to keep me warm in cold temps. I just got 0 degree and 30 degree quilts, so I'm looking forward to trying them out this year.
      Some brands will have more accurate ratings than others, and unfortunately, there really isn't a standard that they have to meet, so it's a good idea to explore a lot of reviews to see what peoples' real world experiences are with something like that.
      Thanks, Angela! There's so much to learn! 🙂

      Hi Paul, just my two cents: I’m a side sleeper that likes my knees bent, too. In the Nemo Disco I will often sleep with one knee up as high as I want, and the other knee just a little lower. If I’m on my left side, my right knee is a little higher, and my left knee just a bit lower, so not “fetal position”, but a bit of a “staggered fetal position”. I decided to try mine out and return it if needed, but it worked out great. I hope you find something that works well for you.

    Just curious about the issues you had with the Sidewinder. As I understand it, when you toss around the Disco, you toss around _inside_ it, while with the Sidewinder you toss around _with_ it. Same would apply with knees, if you bend them in the Sidewinder, the whole bag bends with them, while in the Disco, they stay inside. So I'm guessing the issue was with not being able to bend one knee at a time, or not being able to spread the knees, would that be correct?
    And follow up question, watching videos of the Sidewinder, I like how it "hugs" the top half of the body. How does that compare with the Disco in terms of warmth? I'm a cold sleeper and need the top of my spine to be as warm as possible.

    • @WanderingSwitchback

      Part of my issue with the Sidewinder was that as a stomach sleeper, my back was cold. I had also purchased a short, which was definitely too short, and my toes hurt from it (user error there). And, as you said, since I sleep with my legs apart, the Sidewinder was still too narrow in the knees for me. I've been using a quilt more lately, and it's an even better fit for how I sleep (mine is a UGQ Bandit). I hope that helps some! 🙂

      @@WanderingSwitchback Thanks, that's very helpful. I actually just ordered the Nemo Riff, the slightly more compact version of the Disco. Being able to bring just one knee up is really important to me too.

    Hi! I have the same sleeping bag, and looking for a liner go with it for additional warmth, do you have any recommendations? Thanks!

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback  Рік тому +2

      Look at the series Sea to Summit has. I’ve found, after using a couple, they really only add about 1/3 of the claimed warmth, but they do make a difference. The Thermolite Reactor Extreme is the warmest they offer, so I’d go with that one. I don’t have that specific model, but a couple of other Reactor liners. I hope that helps!

    I was hoping you might get INSIDE the bag and share your thoughts re how the bag shape does or does not align with YOUR shape. Did you buy reg or long? What is it like to move around in the bag? You know, something that cannot be readily surmised by reviewing the mfg website.

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback  8 місяців тому +1

      Mine is a regular length (I’m 5’4”). I did demonstrate myself laying inside, as well as my position, to show how it fits my shape, but thank you for the feedback about actually moving in it. I will keep that in mind for future reviews. 🙂 I’m able to get my knee *almost* as high as I’d like. Moving in it goes better than a more snug fit, but going side to side, sometimes the hood does get misaligned. Since I’m a stomach sleeper, the hood isn’t as useful to me. I hope that helps!

      What an incredible career!
      The Disco 15 runs about $320-350 USD, although it looks like REI has them on sale right now for about $225 USD, if you can get them shipped to you!

    How does it compare to the riff?

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback  Рік тому +2

      The Riff would be similar, except that the down is a higher fill power, meaning it's a little lighter and more compressible for the same warmth. I hope that helps!

      One other thing to note is that the Riff has smaller proportions. So if your a bigger person (like me), you may want that extra space. Its not much but it could count. It also has the "Ultralight Spoon" shape vs the "Classic Spoon" shape of the Disco. All in all, that boils down to more room in the Disco vs the Riff.

      Haha, thanks, Bruce! It was a dangerous job for my wallet when I worked there 10 years ago, and I suspect it would be even more so now! But I do miss always talking to people about their adventures and helping them get their gear in order. It’s a fun place to work!

      Good point. I have found it's much easier to move around in this bag compared with other bags I've used. Not quite as easy as a quilt, but definitely roomier. Not sure if that's super helpful or not! 😊
