When you think about it. You can determine a country's success by splitting them into two categories.
1.) Rich and stable enough that citizens can train for years on end. Living comfortably enough to continue to chase their dream either through their own means, sponsors or government grants.
    Or,
2.) have an authoritarian government obsessed with showcasing their dominance by heavily investing in their athletes, allowing them to focus solely on training.
    Also,
Woot to Australia. Punching above its weight since the beginning.

@@DataIsBeautifulOfficial I am Hungarian, and I think the high level DISCIPLINE was trained into all our citizens, also into young kids at schools,
and the bosses at companies, the teachers at schools and the trainers/coaches in sports could control their subordinates, employees, students, trainees very strictly,
they could do anything with them, shouting at them, hitting them and so on.
In this kind of environment, sport trainees (from 8-9-10 years old) were also handled as "slaves", robots, to get up very early every day, do many trainings daily,
watch their diet strictly, and do not do any other activities other than the sport,
the sport was their Life, they had no "life" beside sport, their childhood completely vanished.
These were not democratic conditions, but strict training methods like in military, the players were "soldiers" who were obliged to train all day and gain the medals.
In these days this control is not so strict, and the personal rights are much more respected,
but in the most successful sports this "military" attitude is still there,
many trainers have the approach that high level performance can be reached only by discipline.

For the Olympics to thrive the IOC should want to maximise the countries competing and the number of events they compete in. The current method of ranking countries exclusively by gold medals discourages less wealthy countries from competing in a broad range of events. A common sense approach to ranking nations is to assign points to each medal - bronze = 1 point, silver = 2 points, and gold = 4 points. This will provide a much more representative ranking than gold only ranking.
