A very tough fight, but you have to give Hagler credit: He ducked NO ONE. Hagler sought out ALL comers - he constantly wanted to prove to himself, the media and the world that he was THE best middleweight of his era - which he was.
One tough man, this and his fight with Hagler were epics. Tommy Hearns was such an exciting fighter to watch, so good yet at times so vulnerable. Both are greats. Thanks Rich. 🥊
It was eye gauge that ended this. Roldan was putting up great effort till the eye gauge. Hagler would have still won without it , but he was taking a good pounding from swarming Roldan.
Hagler was not marvelous. Roldan could have knockout Hagler in the early round. Hagler was a dirty fighter! He could not KO the one eyed fighter Roldan earlier!!
I was a huge Marvelous Marvin Hagler fan back in the day. And I remembered the first time watching Juan Domingo Roldan as he knocked out Frank "The Animal" Fletcher. Something in the back of my mind as a fight fan sort of told me that if he and Marvelous Marvin Hagler would square off as they eventually did, Roldan was going to pose quite a few problems for Hagler. Roldan was a much more accomplished boxer than he gets credit for. He was known for his extremely powerful right punch as his nickname "Martillo" confirmed that. For the first three rounds, Hagler was a bit confused as the fight was not initially going according to plan as Roldan was effectively scoring points to Hagler's body and especially to his head. It was unfortunate that Roldan's eye swelled up during that fight, but that's the fight game.
I definitely agree with you. As stories stated, some thought that it was a controversial thumb from Hagler into Roldan's eye. I think it was totally accidental. There is no way I would believe that as some stated that Hagler may have purposely thumbed Roldan in the eye to change the pace of the match. I was definitely impressed and proud of Roldan's effort against Hagler. Unfortunately, Roldan was never the same fighter after the Hagler bout. As I mentioned, that's the fight game.
ROLDAN WAS CLEARLY WINNING THE FIGHT AND THE FINGER WAS INTENTIONAL, HAGLER WAS ALWAYS DIRTY, HE NDED YOU HE PUSHED YOUR FINGER IN YOUR EYES, THE FIGHT CONTINUES IN FRONT OF LEONARD THEY Wore GLOVES WITH THE FINGER FINGER AND EA HAD DIRTY BECAUSE ETENY HAD DEAD HE WINS THE FIGHT BY CHEATING, ROLLING SHOULD HAVE WON THAT FIGHT, IT WAS A FARCE AND A ROBBERY, AN ASSAULT BY ARMED HAND, ROLLAN COULD NEVER OVERCOME THAT EYE INJURY, AND HE NEVER WAS THAT BOXER AGAIN, BECAUSE HE DOESN'T SEE ANYMORE ALL TO HAGLER'S 'CHEAT THUMB

Ive always dreamed about that matchup, two very hard punchers who both had good chins! And both of their styles were very similar, would've been a great matchup!!
@@yuljohnson5502 I believe Roberto Duran's heavy punching was due to him blowing up to 200 lbs. when he was idle. I have no idea how he was able to shed all of that weight according to reports and maintain his power. That in itself is freakish. I heard that the legendary Archie Moore knew how to shed weight fast as well. I would definitely give Duran the advantage.
This Roldan could have been one of the great one's he had tremendous power in both hands . One thing he was wild needed to work on control energy , more head movement ,also develope his jab. l saw a small Rocky in him!😎
i thought Roldan had all of that. The problem was he got caught and he was handicapped. In his fight with Hearns, he wasnt nearly as good and kept dropping his hands
I love this fight because Roldan went in there too WIN and gave Hagler Zero respect and was handing Hagler a slapping for the 1st 3 rounds. This was a HONEST fight for Marvin. And he knew it. If that eye had never closed man Hagler would have been in for one hell of a ruff night. Hagler still to win but boy it would have been close. Not too many people mention this fight compared to all the other Hagler fights.
Karl Convey totally agree. Roldan was winning till the eye situation. Roldan was deceptively skilled, and could punch. A lot bigger puncher then Hamsho. This would have been a war
+Karl Agreed. My money is on Hagler over the distance - there was no way he could be knocked out and his fitness was legendary. But Roldan was fierce as hell, never backed up, and was deceptively quick. Would've been a long, epic classic.
HAGLER, OGNI , volta prendeva Cocaina
Until he got pocked in the eye, he was the better fighter. What came next, is pointless, you cannot fight against Marvin Hagler with one eye, that is obvious. Roldan is one of the most underrated boxers to the date.
Nonsense. Roldan was holding his own in the first couple of rounds, he was never the "better fighter." He was gonna gas out and get stopped eventually, regardless of that injury to his eye.
Juan Domingo Roldan, one of the toughest 'old school' boxers of his era. Nobody had an easy night against him, he pushed Hagler hard and did the same to Tommy Hearns. R.I.P. to two true warriors who would have little trouble dominating today's fighters.
Roldan was 30 seconds away from winning round 3 which would have put him up 30 - 26 on the judges scorecards. For Hagler to retain his title with a draw he would have needed to win 8 of the last 12 rounds. I'm not saying he couldn't have done it, but he would have needed to fight way more aggressively than he had been up to that point, which would have been the exact fight that Roldan wanted. Marvin totally would have had to change his game plan, which he probably didn't want to do. That eye injury prevented perhaps one of the great fights of all time, as Roldan was gettting hit with punches that he was easily avoiding earlier in the fight. He pretty much had Hagler figured out the first two and a half rounds.
He definitely has Hagler going backwards those three rounds which is NOT what Hagler is used to. Hagler always moved forward. Roldan for three rounds nullified Hacker by pressing forward and good head movement

Hagler had his training, strategy and tactics buy also something his opponents just didn't have. You can sum it up in three words. Conditioning, Conditioning, CONDITIONING!
I love Hagler when he gets mad inside the ring lol. He just goes divvy on you with badass shots, wish there were more exciting boxers around today like him.
Btw the announcers were horrible. They knew nothing about Roldan. Knew nothing about Hagler's fight history. And obsessed over a phantom thumb. Roldan fought for the title three times because he was a tough, awkward fighter, limited by the fact that you could wear him out if you can take his punch. Very tough to look good against him. You just had to figure him out and wear him down.
IceveinsProductions That was obviously a slip, the ref probably knew that Hagler was going to fuck him up so he counted it as knock down to give the guy a good start and confidence boost ahaha
I think he corrected himself and the cards by ruling Roldan down in the 3rd when he never really got hit,he only got tangled in the ropes avoiding punches.

Although Roldan was very strong Hagler was too. Hagler also had speed and skill and he used those advantages to dismantle Roldan round by round without putting himself at much risk. Hagler adapted his style for whatever type of boxer he faced.

Mega Respect to Juan Roldan for going 10 rounds with The Marvellous one, the Fella had so much Heart he spent the second half of the fight with only the use of one eye, his corner should have pulled him out, as he was on a hiding to nothing with one eye against Hagler, but what a Warrior Roldan was RIP BOTH WARRIORS ❤️⭐️🌞
Richard H, I agree with you. Hagler would've beaten Hopkins. Hagler is a throwback to the 1940's. Jake LaMotta said Hagler would have done really good in his day.
If you listen closely at the end of the 2nd rd at 9:23 Hagler's trainer tells him not to get discouraged. It sounds like Hagler responds back: " No I ain't I'm just waiting to poke em." I've always wondered what the outcome of this fight would have been had Roldan not had his vision impaired so early in the fight?
@jabs69 .. what you say is not true. hagler acted dirty by sticking his thumb in the Argentine's eye. This changed the pace of the fight. Well, until then, Hagler wasn't having a good time at all.
@Afri Media He could have easily done that in the earlier rounds...but he didn't. He kept fighting. But he also had sense enough to know he couldn't win. That's not quitting. That's GOOD sense.
Ok kids, here's the tale of the great king of the middle weights. His opponents were tremendously strong and hit terribly hard like no others could. One was called "The Beast", another was called "The Hitman" and the one in this episode was called ,"The Hammer". They destroyed everything in their path and were feared by many, including one who was a sissy runner, but many people liked, ugh. Anywhooo, This king ,"Marvelous Marvin Hagler", took all they had to offer including the kitchen sink. But his determination and will was imposed on them and he sent them packing to an early retirement and some to a permanent vacation. The End
@@Harrygton IDGAF what nobody say, Hagler didnt win that fight(The Sugar Ray fight) and HE KNEW it after the final bell. Thats EXACTLY why he was acting like that after the fight was over. You know damn well Hagler never acted that way after a fight
before those fighters there was Eugene Hart in 76. Hagler was really fast in that fight and showed how well Hagler could fight when pushed. IMO, Hart was the hardest puncher Hagler faced with one shot Hagler peaked in 81 - 82 and I doubt any middleweight could have hung with him
Hagler carried Roldan until the 10th, just like Ali used to do. The paying fans feel they don't get their money's worth if the fight is too short. Hagler never even had to break a sweat.
Roldan knocked down Hagler in a most unusual way. It was not a clean hit in a traditional sense, but Juan Domingo Roldan is credited with something no other fighter ever did. Too bad for him the rest of the bout did not unfold well, but such is life in the ring with Marvelous Marvin.
It was clearly a punch. He barely touched him in the top of the head, but was enough to make Hagler fall down. He wasn't rock, that is clear, but that doesn't mean the punch didn't cause the knock down. Look at the feet of hagler, he was jumping at the same time the punch entered, and so fell down. The referee was right.
And after the punch sent him to the canvas Hagler complains and did so after the fight too. For such a great fighter he always did and still whines when people don't see his version of events. He got knocked down sparring with Bobby Patterson in a public workout before his fight with John Mugabi and claimed it was a slip too, despite countless witnesses seeing otherwise.
Roldan was about to win the 3 first rounds in a row and suddenly went back with his right eye closed (12:45). At the corner complained of a finger and lack of vision. Lectoure (manager and 1st second) said "pull out his gloves" at his aide. Then changed his mind and asked Roldan not to give up. The rest is history.
Roberto Bobrow No one wants to believe this but I think Roldan knocks Hagler out if his eye doesn’t get injured. Before the eye injury he was easily avoiding Hagler’s punches and after? Not so much. What this video shows are two different fights. If you watch Roldan’s initial reaction it seems pretty obvious that his eye got poked. And the only part of a boxing glove with a surface area small enough to cause that kind of an injury is the thumb. I know most fans will disagree but Marvin dodged a major bullet that night.
Yeah because everything you say is conjecture, you know, not reality. How many boxers win fights in late rounds, plenty. Who had unmatched conditioning? Hagler. You guys like to fantasise. @@davidbrandel1311
I think the punch that closes Roldan's eye occurred with twenty-eight seconds remaining in the third round. He is already covering up when the next punch lands at the twenty-five second mark that is the focus of the replay. Roldan was a bull. But if you could weather the first few rounds he wore down. His eye closed also in the Nunn fight.
One my favorite Hagler's fights, with the one vs Mugabi. Roldan was highly skilled but not smart enough, and lacking stamina and chin to face monsters as Hagler or Hearns. Whatever, he clearly deserved a rematch, far more than Hamsho.
To me Roldan was one of those who was good enough to be champion, but it's unfortunately he was in an era with the all time greats. Had he been around a few years before or after, he would have been champion.
I saw something very telling between round 9 and 10 in the corner of Roldan..Roldan obviously gave everything he had left and was pretty much done..he didn't seem to want know more..however his corner was urging him to continue. Here is my assessment and personal analysis at that point..If I was in that corner and realistically thought..that my fighter..Roldan..had a a very good chance of possibly winning the fight in the next couple of rounds..yeah..I'd send him out..but Roldan came into that corner discouraged and not the guy that wanted to win the Undisputed Middleweight championship of the world..and what happened next is history

Tip my hat to Roldan. He stayed in it as long as possible considering how bad was his right eye. Hagler was a phenomenal athlete. Not tired. Not out of breath. Still fresh and ready for business after round 7. He's lethal every second of each round. Great champ.

All respect to Roldan - he was a hell of a warrior. But that was clearly a slip.

Yes, it was definitely a slip!
He falled from a punch, not hurted, but the punch is there... Also he was hurt in at least two other times in this fight from hooks

This era produced so many true fighting men and so many great competitive contests .
Hagler is perfect to me, can box inside, outside, decent power, strong chin and strong minded.

Yo también. Nunca vi a Hagler retroceder.
this fight shows how great Marvin was. even on an off night, he was versatile enough to win by ko

Todd Sands Roldan was winning till the eye situation. I think he had a shot at winning till that happened
As I mentioned, that's the fight game.
its just as they said, he gave Hagler the fight of his life. he threw most fighters off their rhythm

Much respect to Roldan. He's the only one ever to fight Godzilla

Until he got pocked in the eye, he was the better fighter. What came next, is pointless, you cannot fight against Marvin Hagler with one eye, that is obvious. Roldan is one of the most underrated boxers to the date.
Lulu Musi you are spot on!! Roldan was winning.
@SavageArfad Yup
He definitely has Hagler going backwards those three rounds which is NOT what Hagler is used to. Hagler always moved forward. Roldan for three rounds nullified Hacker by pressing forward and good head movement
In my opinion no one boxer has been even just close to have the ability to absorb and recover from destructive punches as Hagler.

That was not a legit knockdown everybody knows that
Hagler-Roldán happened exactly 40 years ago!
Agree, Hagler was not hurt but punch hit his head, he goes to canvas, it is a knockdown.
And after the punch sent him to the canvas Hagler complains and did so after the fight too. For such a great fighter he always did and still whines when people don't see his version of events. He got knocked down sparring with Bobby Patterson in a public workout before his fight with John Mugabi and claimed it was a slip too, despite countless witnesses seeing otherwise.
roldan was done before the round started
I respect any man that gets in that square circle. Win or lose. 1 on 1 sport

The other advantage Hagler had in his fights is that he was better than everyone else. Let's not make excuses.
No doubt
Hagler was a machine
