The scene is what I love about the earlier seasons. No chance they spend 5 minutes on something like this in later seasons.
The whole series was lower stakes in season 1, CTU gives off the vibes of just a regular office. So Jack doing something like this seemed like a huge deal.
@@RandomGuy285 That's actually what I love about season 1 and why it's my favorite. They ultimately had no choice but to raise the stakes every season to keep people engaged, but that meant they often had to take it to absurd levels. The nuclear bomb going off in season 6 is a prime example.
The best twist ever in the history of television in the way Nina was always there for Jack but ended up being his worst enemy.
Which begs the question why did Ira Gaines order Jack to kill Nina? A plot hole? Was he not told by Victor Drazen she was a deep cover operative working for them? You would think Drazen would have told Gaines about Nina to avoid such a scenario, either way a plot hole.
@@GLYDR gaines wasnt told and at this point the show wasnt approved for the full 24 episodes but like 11 so nina being a mole wasnt decided
George is an amazing character. His snark is S tier.

Married Nina in real life plus his plane scenario in season 2 was nothing but heroic.
I love how quaint Jack's office seems compared to how it would become in the Buchanan era. A couple small desks, an ugly metal locker, an iMac with all the wires exposed, a wrinkled couch that he likely has spent a ton of nights on. It feels like an office someone would actually work out of instead of the set of a TV show.
But Bill Buchanan was such a good CRU director though. Imagine if they never had him in season 6
It wouldn't surprise me if that was Christopher Henderson's office before Jack busted him on bribery corruption charges.
I always felt that way about CTU in general. It always felt like a real job where people have odd personalities and wierd little idiosyncratic tendencies
With it being the pilot episode it is very stripped down. CTU isn’t even a proper set, it is an old office at Fox studios, and a fair few of the actors are wearing their own clothes. I love it personally!
It's insane to me that this is when Nina was his closest confidant-and former lover-and by the end of this season, for the rest of her run, became probably the most personal of any of his arch enemies out there.
J.B. ... James Bond? Jason Bourne ? NO....... Jack Bauer !!!

George had the best character development in the show.
I've never seen Season 1 (only Seasons 3-6) but just from this scene I can tell the direction, music and general tone is SO MUCH BETTER than subsequent seasons. It has this raw, realistic and balanced feeling.
It’s not overly flashy or pushing the boundaries of realism, it’s just like ordinary people working in an office, including the clerical politics embodied by Mason.
I always forget how much of a "surfer dude" look Kiefer had in Season 1. He's like the love child of James Bond and Kato Kaelin.
I really like Mason. Even when he doesn’t get along with Jack but compared to Chapelle, Mason was more reasonable and cooperative.
I’m rewatching 24’s all seasons on Netflix after 12 years since I binge watched one season’s entire 24 episodes.

Season 1 felt so much different vs later seasons. Real government offices are dated, tacky and not well decorated. They're not glossy high tech places like CTU was in S4 and beyond.
This is the scene where an ordinary man turned into Jack Bauer.

“What do you know about Palmer’s politics?”… that’s a thread I wish they had followed up on in this season. Was George in on something, or just jaded?
With this being the pilot, I think they left the thread intentionally open with Mason’s comment in case he turned out to be the mole. As he ended up being a jerk (but not a mole) the comment still fits. Lol
Call me an idiot, but I still don’t understand what Mason could have been implying.

@@hadid1092 I took it to be implied that maybe Jack shouldn't make this his top priority because if they let Palmer die then it would be better for them at CTU.
He was jaded and greedy, not into anything nefarious. That's kind of the whole point of his arc in season 2; becoming someone far less selfless.

The incidental music (not sure what the piece is called) that plays when Jack is listening in to Mason’s call on the other phone tends to pop up in other random shows and trailers.
Was it used on other episodes of this season? I don't recall it on other seasons.
@@SleepExports I think it was maybe used elsewhere in season 1, but definitely not in other seasons. Could have just been a generic piece of “industry music” that they used for the pilot? I do like it though.

@@thelordofsalem3044 It's called Iguazu from the movie Babel. 24 only used "unoriginal" music twice - this song, and the instrumental from the movie Crash when Curtis Manning's character "exited" in season 6.
Mason was the best guy from Division. We just didn’t know it at the time.

Dang CTU looks way different here compared with season 6.
It was so long since the last time I watched 24. This scene is a good example of why first season was so special in comparison to the rest of the show. Everything was so different, even in terms of esthetic. Even the definition of the image feels different. The grain of the image feels different. I guess it had the purpose to make the viewer feel this sense of realism of a character who is in contact with his routine, both family and work routine.Don´t get me wrong. The whole show is good, but I think season one is something else in terms of story and in terms of estethic.
