Good job! I'd give that black dye at least three days to dry and seal it in with resolene. Try a wing divider to lay out your stitch lines and cut closer to your edges of big leather pieces. That'll minimize waste. For a first try, you did awesome!

Why so long for the dye to dry? I understand giving it time to dry before adding finishers or oils but why so long?

@@mavrikmavrik3032 Fiebings black takes a long time to dry. I'm not sure why, but it takes much longer. Try this, take two wool daubers and put black on one and any color brown on the other. Put them on some brown paper from the hardware store folded in two. That waxy brown paper will stop the brown but the black will shoot right through the paper. Then, give it some time and do a smear test on some scrap. The black will be wet for hours. That's why I avoid black dye. Chocolate is actually a nicer color and people really like it. When you get to doing dyed backgrounds, dark brown or chocolate will look black to the eye without the issues. Hope this helps.

I didn’t realize that about the black. I use it a lot and normally dry it with a heat gun before applying a conditioner (and melting that in with a heat gun too). If the project is going to be next to clothing I may buff it but after drying with the heat gun I rarely get any rub off.

Thanks for the info guys... My experience, only a few years as of now, has been much like Mavrik's... I do get a little bleeding to fabric from the black if I don't buff and seal it... but buffing an sealing usually does the trick for me.
I'm interested in trying the dark brown/chocolate alternative to black though.
      Thanks again guys.

This is awesome! Just what I was looking for. Diy is really affordable, but buying one from like alien gear, BIG BUCKS

I own an Alien gear holster (Tuck 3 I think)... it was $50-ish. Took a month to get, but worth the wait and the money.
I still make these for myself tho... they don't slide around as much as the Aliens, but they make you sweat a little more.

Bad ass! I may have to do this, Alien Gear had a 2 week delivery time (When I placed my order). Which turned into an 6 week build with an additional 10+days for USPS. May just return it and go thise route.

I own an alien gear holster... It's worth the wait... they use material for their backing that breaths better than leather.
That being said... this isn't the only hybrid holster I have made for myself... these are comfy too.

Where’d you get your materias from? Clips, soft backing, kydex

    • @GPWoodworks
      @GPWoodworks  3 роки тому

I get them from Tandy leather and Amazon... The backing I used in this video is an extremely cheap suede I got at Tandy.

Maybe stupid question but, can this be done without a backing? Just the backside of the leather itself?

Great video. Do you think it would be possible to mount a Kydex holster I have already to a rigid sheet of leather like that for added comfort against the body or do you think it's not worth the effort? I'm trying to make this $20 holster as nice and comparable as possible to a $75+ holster with DIY mods and so far I'd say it's rivaling $50-$60 mark. This is all it needs, lol.

    • @GPWoodworks

You can absolutely do that. Might be tricky depending on the design of your existing holster.
The leather backplate is comfortable. It will prevent the holster from slipping around when worn IWB. But, it gets a little sweaty.
There are pros and cons to all designs.
