It kinda bothers me how in these videos they always blame the product for doing exactly what it's supposed to do. This dye worked really well! Of course it looks different on her roots, they were a different colour to start with.

I’m 44 and had no idea either. Tbh I only started conditioning my coarse, thick, very wavy hair properly with treatments etc in the last decade or so. The black /poc/curly hair community deserves huge thanks from me for answering my questions; they really schooled me on how to treat my hair including giving it a rest occasionally.

£60 is cheap for a hair colouring service here in the UK!! I pay £146 for a full head of highlights and £67 for a cut and finish. Having tried to bleach my hair at home once when I was 16 (way back in the early 80s) and ended up with orange hair I have always known that hair colouring is a job best left in the hands of the professionals. My colourist is a genius and having watched so many of Hair Buddha's reaction videos and seen the awful mess some people make of their hair I appreciate her skill and expertise even more.

We used to have Castings available here in the US, but I have not seen it anywhere in more than a decade. I loved that brand because it was a demi, and you mixed it by screwing the color bottle underneath and up into the developer bottle before shaking it. Cool novelty there! The color was very nice, too. It was so many years ago when I used it, so it is probably a different product now. Edit: I checked out the color as it is sold now on Amazon (comes from overseas and is $$ for Americans), and it is still a demi permanent gloss, so more like a toner.

L'oreal has some of the best box dyes on the market. They are not as aggressive as most others are, but yes, you are right, they do not stay as long on the hair. After one month you need to reapply the colour (it depends of the colour, but that is the average I would say). I liked Preference when I used to dye my hair and after I started using it, never went back. When I was very young I tried a lot of other products and some really destroyed my hair (I lost half of my hair dying it with Palette....) Sometimes is better to pay a little more than lose your hair.

I used Wella Colour, very nice result. Cost around 30 quid instead. But I do know what I am doing. One hair salon quoted me 330 lmao, and they didn't even have skirtings and it was dingy. Looks good. Whack a nice deep treatment on it and it will become more moist.

I do not have experience with hair salon, but every business works the same. In salon people pay not just for the color and the person working there, but also every single hair clip, alu foil, brash scissors or any other prop you need for your job as well as your electricity bill and lease, and chairs and everything else. When I was making prizes in the shop I had to sell each thing for double the prize the owner was buying it for. That´s how it works.

I went to salon to touch up regrowth, when I was blonde. I did it myself usually but that time I didn't want to spend hours in the bathroom by myself.
I spend 4 hours at hairdresser, and she burned my scalp. It was actually sore for a few days afterwards (never happened to me with store brought bleach). And I have thin hair, so she didn't spend much time putting it on.
That was the last time I was at hairdresser. Spend a lot of money and time to get burned scalp... I'm sure there are good hairdressers who can do it perfectly, but I don't have much hair to go one person to another to find the one that won't hurt me.

I've been playing with my hair color since I was 13. I had "dishwater blonde" hair, not blonde, not brown; indecisive like me. lol I started with lemon juice then went to Sun-In then highlight cap. When I turned 18, I first dyed my hair with box color and never looked back. I went from dark ash blonde to medium blonde. It took out the ashy color and lifted it a bit but I wasn't happy. Since, I've been all the light & extra light blondes, except for the ashes. By the time I was brave enough to try strawberry blonde, it was gone in the only color that didn't give me migraines.
The thing I loved most about doing it myself was the different colors each strand took on depending on the thickness of the strand. My thickest were copper and the thinnest pale blonde. I found the even color salons strive for so boring. I finally stopped coloring when I had to decide if I wanted to go grey or keep coloring.
My hair was down to my calves and I didn't want a salon to take my hair to grey and have it all even. At the beginning of the plague, I decided to cut it all off once I had 4" of regrowth. I love the shorter hair and don't really care about the salt & pepper look. My body's probably healthier for it, too, I know my purse is. :)

I agree completely about the excessively even result at salons btw. It's a bit performative I feel, like it's more about getting the 'salon look' than it is about looking good. And sometimes it about the hairdresser doing things to prove that they know the 'proper' way to do hair and less about what the client wants. I know I have left salons too often feeling like I didn't get what I asked for.. Instead I got what the hairdresser wanted other people to see leaving the salon. Like my preferences is less important than the 10 seconds of advertising for them as I walk out of there... I have given up on going to hairdressers too. Sigh.

This color is amazing, but your pick right shades. Im brown - maybe litle medium brown and I choose between 3.xx - 4.xx shades. Shades 323 I consider it one of the nicest shades you can buy in a drugstore. Sometimes I bought 5.xx if I want mor lightest shade and it is same super result.

at the salon, i always start in the back, but when ive bleached my friends hair at hair place, ive always started at the front, cos i find that easier to handle when you have to rinse it out in the shower, rather than at a handy-dandy backwash

hey hair buddha, i have been coloring my own hair for 25 years ..... one thing to point out to you.
most people don't have a hair basin at home, we are rinsing our hair in the bath tub or sink. so we are leaning FORWARD while rinsing, not backwards. so for a lot of people it is actually easier to rinse the front first instead of rhe back.
but also its messy because it runs down my face hahahaha

I colored my hair last week, but with my white/grey roots, they were too light. I dyed it with 20vl first. Then yesterday, I touched up my roots and made them a bit darker and only used 10vl. It’s a red color. It’s not perfect, but it looks pretty good. I will touch up my roots again when the white and grey show up again. Thank you for all your helpful videos.💜💜
PS- $60 to get your hair done? Is this 1990? If I only had to pay $60 I would go back to the salon. I have thick curly hair. I’m always looking at about $150-250 just to color it.

My hair is a couple inches longer than hers and I recently went from a very very light blonde to a medium ash brown. It took 8 boxes of hair dye and i think 4 different dying sessions, to get it right. Just saying.

I just wanna say THANK YOU, I´ve been watching you and I´m SURE my hair is still in my head thanks to you. From red to purple to pastel pink and every bleach (using a good bleach powder) between I´ve followed every single one of your tips and advice resulting in beautiful color and little damage to my hair, I´m no pro at hair but you have made it so much easier to do and understand the process of coloring and bleaching. thank you!

The more of these I watch the more I am convinced some of these chemicals should not be sold to the general public... I always go to my stylist to get my hair done. If I do it myself I will ruin my hair. It costs more because you're paying for their knowledge and skill

Don't know about the States but in England they're not meant to be sols to general public but you can get so much stuff from Amazon. I'm a hairdresser and some chemicals can be really dangerous.

Based on that logic we could never buy kettles, candles, knifes and so many other things. Everything can be dangerous if one doesn't switch on their brain...

ok, im sorry i love your videos and have watched a few different hairdressers react videos and all of them say start at back so its easier to wash out.... at a salón yes but at home alone its easier doing front first then just flip head in bath or shower, coz how is one meant to limbo backwards and wash the back of the hair.. maybe im wrong but personally thunk washing back off on own is way harder. love u

I have a solution to dark roots. Don't color your hair in the first place. Then you don't have to worry about regrowth

When your hair and face, body are the source of income....you have a photoshoot??? And are dying your OWN hair, long, full, gorgeous hair, for the FIRST time....the first time is always an adventure, so is the 2nd, third, 4th, and on.........foods you eat, medicines, air quality, water, shampoos etc all affect hair, so it changes each time. I was red for 25 years, every 3 weeks, I already had alot of growth. You need at least 3 boxes, probably 4. That is why you get it from a shop, but more important.....DON'T DO IT, unless they don't mind your hair being a wig.
