"Kite Popper" line climber

- My 480th kite video. This device, designed by Peter Rondeau, is a novelty that might soon wear off, but it's interesting to watch for a while. Thank you to my friend Graham, for accidentally reminding me that I had this item and had never used it.

I've been very curious to seen of these in action. Thank you for the excellent demonstration!
I'm glad it was useful.
Jim, A nicer option for using the Kite Popper is to tie a knot at the top point of the kite string and a second knot near the middle or bottom of the line. As you saw, the popper collapses when it hit the bridal at the top. It will do that anywhere you tie the knot on the line. As an addition to this item (if you tie a knot at the bottom of the line) the popper will then open when it hits the bottom knot. I believe you were having trouble because it was interfering with the tree root at the bottom. Does take a minute to thread the popper on the line and then let the kite string out before tying the knot at the bottom. The action can happen way up in the air without you having to relaunch at all. Hope this gives you something else to try with it.
Andrew, I had a small carabiner fixed to the line just before the bridle to stop the popper and return it. I hadn't thought of putting something at the bottom end to send it back up again. The popper didn't show any inclination to re-launch on reaching the bottom, but I'll try your idea next time. It would be good if it just kept repeating without needing attention. Thanks!
Hey Jim, did it work?
Ona more serious note, seeing that Popper climb the line at about 0:27 into the vid reminds me of the 'solar sail simulation' from the motion picture TRON [1982].
Really.
Totally! I had the same thought. We are clearly old! :)
@@someredditor >>> 👍👍 😊
Wow. So beautiful
I've never seen this before..
I should use it again. It has to be put on the line before the kite is attached, which is a bit of a bother, but not really a problem.
excellent demonstration Jim, If I get there next Jan I will try to bring a messenger that I made, It will carry a payload up to the kite a drop it, I use a tennis ball with a piece of string wound around it with a loop,
graham vaughan I'll look forward to that, Graham. I hope you can get here.
If it drops the tennis ball I'll buy a dozen for my dogs 😆
That thing would launch like a rocket where I live. Which makes me want one all the more, I wonder if they are still made.
It's still available, here for instance: www.pictureprettykites.com/kite-accessories/popper-rainbow/
Ha ha !! Very nice Jim ✔✔✔
I have one "Popper" too and I carry a long piece of wire folded in half in popper's packaging bag to use as a threader .
My popper likes climbing up to the octopus on a huge long line and children love sending him away but then he gets gobbled up and only his carcass comes falling back down. LOL.
Their job is to quickly pull the octopus in a little and let it out again to slow the carcass down just before it hits their hand. Good fun ........ (◕‿◕) ,,
***** The wire sounds like a great idea, Nara; it took me ages to thread it. Involving the spectators adds a lot to the fun, too!
I think this would be great for my kids who all want to fly kites but don't really understand how to yet. I could set it up and they could play with it all day long
I would not advise that. It comes back down the line at high speed, and could cause damage to a small child (or even an adult who puts his or her hands in the wrong place.) It also needs re-setting every time, and that might be a little tricky for a child. Better to give them a small kite, which you can launch and tie down, and then they can hold the line with no fear of losing it.
I just bought this same popper from Premier Kites. The brass piece inside the rod at the top of the popper appeared to be molded poorly. There were noticeable jagged edges which would probably chafe the line over time. I've scratched it down with a thin screwdriver so it should be good now. But I'd recommend anyone who purchases this item to check inside the rod to make sure the line can travel smoothly.
That's useful information, Peter. Very poor quality control by the maker to send out products like that.
interesting. I agree, an audience would make it more fun.
Have you seen this clip of the auto relaunch solution ?
Kite line climber surprise
Kiteflying Down Under I don't usually have one of those with me at the beach, Carl!
Is there any kite plans for this line climber? :-)
Not that I've seen, but you might find something similar here: www.kiteplans.org/
I wouldn't like using this because of the threading aspect. I do however have a couple of parachute climbers that clip over any line (except maybe the 1000# + stuff). They take up a tissue chute with something attached and when it gets to it's deployment destination, it let's it fall back to earth for observers to chance & catch to claim their prize (like candy or whatever!
Sounds like fun!
@Dano Kitemano Too
Where do you get those?
@@swashbucklingadventures9929 - I used to get them at kite stores in the 90's, but just do a search on line for DIY Kite Line Climbers & you might find them or plans to make a parachute dropper. Wouldn't be hard to make!

Thanks for responding ✌
@@swashbucklingadventures9929 ~ There are plans online to make them, becuse IDK if they are commercially available anymore! Sorry, for such a late reply, I don't usually use that other profile for watching entertainment videos. This is my main profile where I have my kite videos!
You should name this vid, "HOW TO KEEP KIWI KITEFLIERS ENTERTAINED FOR HOURS".
;~)°
Wow😆😆
Its like the solar sail ship from Tron
I guess the same principle, if you substitute solar wind for earth wind. I haven't used that for years, so I should get it in action again.
Jim Nicholls not sure why your video came up, I was looking for ebay and aliexpress kites as I’ve ordered one which looks to be a Wala kite clone.
I had one of those years ago but it wasn't a good clone. I've since bought a real Wala XL which I'm happy with. Search engines give some odd results sometimes.
That would keep a bystander occupied for a while. Would be clever if it reopened and launched itself.
Kiteflying Down Under That might be even more boring, Carl! It's a short-term attraction, I think.
Funny
Mustafa Topcu It's a clever idea, and amusing for a while.
Why does it seem that everything associated with flying kites something has to be rainbow color ?
I feel the same way. It's annoying when you find an interesting kite to know that it only comes in "rainbow" colours. The manufacturers seem to be obsessed with that colour scheme, and too lazy to consider others. I try to look for other designs whenever I can, not always successfully.
Just saw a similar where a micro video camera was attached to the kite. Might make it slightly more interesting?
kite_popper.wmv
0KiteEatingTree0 I had one of those micro cameras, but can't find it right now. I might give it a go if I do locate it.
