RSL Speedwoofer 12S Subwoofer Review: True 16Hz Extension for $800?!?

  • The RSL Speedwoofer 12S builds on the venerable 10S MK2 but with a larger 12” driver and enclosure with 16Hz extension for only $800. James Larson reviewed the 12S and put it through music and movie torture testing and CEA-2010 and found it to be a significant upgrade from the Speedwoofer 10S. It’s not just quantitatively better, it’s qualitatively better. Now we have ‪@therealshanelee‬ take on dual Speedwoofer 12S subs integrated into his theater room to give his impressions.
    RSL is running a Fall promotion. Here’s the details:

    I went from 1 10S to a 10S + 10SII to the 12S. Man the 12S is a monster, it feels like the floorboards are moving when it hits low notes.. The 10S's are killer subs and they are all an incredible value, but man the 12S low end is just insane.

      Do you prefer the single 12s to dual 10s? I have a single 10s mkII and trying to decide between an additional 10s vs switching to a single 12s. The only thing keeping me from the 12s is the fact that my movie room is under the kids bedrooms 😂😂

      @@WeeWeeJumbo that's partly why they redid the intro for the 4K Blu-ray, I reckon they didn't expect people to actively try and wreck their gear with it, and with the proliferation of soundbar-systems with lackluster subs, they didn't want to risk people blowing things up.
      Plus, everything below 20 Hz is pretty pointless anyway

    Great review! How would you compare these to the Stark subwoofers, knowing they usually go on big sales and also dip into the infrasonic realm? Both are large-room certified on audioholics but obviously different design philosophy; big driver/small sealed box vs small driver/large ported box.

      Not a fan of Tom/PSA either. I tried to communicate with him through email to make a purchase a few years ago and he wouldn’t give me the time of day. Come to find out later that he hates shipping products into Canada. Probably good that it happened that way, as I came out way ahead with a far superior JTR setup.

    This is not an acoustic suspension design based on the cutaway view. The acoustic suspension design relies on the stuffing inside the enclosure to control the damping factor, not the mechanical suspension. This is accomplished by forcing the woofer to lose energy by pushing and pulling air between a large number of densely packed fibers whose aggregate surface area is enormous creating friction. The loss of energy is directly related to the velocity of the cone and not the frequency and hence the air being pushed and pulled. This is the b*dx/dt component of Newton's Second law of motion. This law applied to forced oscillation explains how every woofer/enclosure works and why the acoustic suspension principle which should have been called the pneumatic suspension principle works and why this principle is the best design. Still, within its limits this seems like a good value but should be crossed over at a very low frequency based on its poor performance above 50 to 60 hz. By comparison the Teledyne Acoustic Research AR9, my reference speaker, a 4 way design uses two opposing 12" side firing woofers crossed over at 200 hz with an 18 db per octave (3rd order) crossover to an 8" acoustic suspension lower midrange used as a woofer in designs like AR4x which operates up to 1.5 khz. This exploits the research by Roy Allison in both coupling the woofer to the room and eliminating the 200 hz suckout. The AR woofers are damped to Q=0.5 and a -3d point unequalized at 28 hz. My spectrum analyzer for what it's worth shows output down to 4 hz, the limit of its measurement. It's a real room shaker.

      @@markfischer3626to try and absorb all the bass frequencies via densely packed fiber is akin to infinite baffle/dipole woofer setup leading to very poor transient response/loss of bass tightness. Mechanical restoring force is absolutely needed for good transient response with properly sized bass reflex and even better for sealed enclosures with a QTC of around 0.7.

    • @markfischer3626
      @markfischer3626 Рік тому

      @andymack8178 It's just not true. Bass reflex woofers are like organ pipes or horn instruments in that at the resonance frequency air moves easily through the port. Half an octave above and below it's much harder. This is why the system resonant frequency is the effective lower limit of its useful response falling off at 24 dB per octave which is not equalizable. Acoustic Suspension speakers with a system Q of 0.707, critical da.ping falls off at 12 dB per octave which is equalizable. Infinite baffle drivers rely on their mechanical suspension for k and damping.

    16 Hz? who measured that and where? 16Hz wavelength is 70 FEET LONG!! Do you or anyone else have a 70 foot listening space? The lowest Hz of any speaker is determined by the size of the room NOT what some company tells me. Most claims are BS. I build and design my own speakers and subs and I have extensive measuring equipment to see what I am hearing. I designed 2 dual 12" subs built to the golden ratio and the drivers are diametrically opposed so little vibration and even less harmonic distortion, and even when placed in the corners of my room the lowest frequency I can obtain is about 20 Hz measured by my Velodyne SMS and I have a large listening area and an open house design. Just using some common sense and measuring equipment and READING.
