Bel-Air Country Club's Younger Brother Holmby Hills

- LA local Geoff Shackelford takes Erik Anders Lang around a favorite track of his that he frequented in college. It's not LACC (which Geoff worked on), it's not Bel-Air (which shares the same designer) and it's not Riviera (although notables have played here)...
drum roll
Holmby Hills Golf Course. Or, Holmby Park Golf Course... or... Armand Hammer GC or just "The Pony Course." It has held many names/nicknames over the decades, but Holmby Park has been home to pitch and putt golf for almost 100 years. What the course does best is act as a community center for dog lovers, resident walkers and golfers alike. One of the only parks in the world that doesn't have a sign reading "No Golfing."

Hey Erik! Shout out from India.
The zip code of Dharavi in Mumbai is 400017
Erik deserves so many more subscribers, I really hope he gets the recognition he deserves. He is the reason I got more in to golf then I was.
Dang that first song can hit you in the feels if you don’t have your head on a swivel.
I am loving these mini course videos. As a new father this is all I have time for. So good “my guy”!
One of my favorite parts about this channel is how much I learn about golf from some of the most sincere people you can see on UA-cam. Absolutely fantastic content 👏
What a cool place! Never would have known about it, thanks EAL, another great reason to watch these videos!
These just keep getting better and better. Great work
i grew up at holmby park and this was the first place i ever played golf! I am glad you found this gem of a park. My mom and I still belong to the lawn bowling club. they roll on saturday 10a-1p, if guys ever wanna join. thanks again!
Took the week off work to do some jobs around the house, got two 9 hole rounds in this week. Played by myself on my home course, holes 1-6 then 16 - 18. The most enjoyable time I have spent in the freezing UK weather playing winter tees and winter greens. The enjoyment golf brings on a personal and social level is incredibly important to the positive vibes you give off every day. Golf for me now is about enjoying the moment and not wanting to get a lower handicap. This is all down to you Eric, my guy. Many have tried but not spoken with the passion you do. Great videos and podcasts.
A lovely humble film. Loving the North Berwick shout out too. Couldn't agree more. Their starter just retired last week after 20 odd years in the role. A proper course.
That was great! And Geoff, what an amazing guy, so insightful
Thanks Erik. Great video and music. You added value to my day.
Working in Mogadishu, Somalia, at the moment. Watching your videos and work when I can get online is a real pleasure. Can't wait to get home again and pick up my clubs again after about ten years without playing. Your content has brought me back to wanting to play again, and play with a new mindset and view of the game. Thank you.
Thanks Iain
@@RandomGolfClubFilms thank you, working in my industry, photojournalism, golf just seemed wrong for a long time, now I see it very differently, as something worthy and worthwhile - I've been to many of the countries you have filmed in and I will have those memories in mind the next time I pick up my clubs. Stay strong ✌️
Awesome clip Erik, I would totally play golf with my dog in this park! I'm in Melbourne, Australia and we need more courses like this. The idea that a course doesn't have a big set of gates and is organically part of the community is what makes it magical.
Didn't think it was possible but your videos keep getting even better and better!
What a brilliant video. Just a shame they are not a tad longer. Best golf channel on any platform or station!!!!
Hands down, favorite video so far
Your edits are gold man.
I love these videos of courses that aren't your traditional big course. Another great video.
First....Thanks so much for the great content. There is a course in Hershey,PA (The Juvenile) Spring Creek. 9 holes, recently updated (ruined) to make it more playable. It's still owned by the Milton Hershey Home for Children and has been since 1932. First course in the US built to cater to golfers under the age of 17. Hershey residents could buy their kids a season pass (week days) for like 90 bucks. Ride your bike to the course......Mom packed ya a lunch and play all day. Currently managed by the Hershey Country Club and they operate it with a little too much starch in their shorts. Hershey recently lost the Hershey Hotel 9 hole course and The Hershey Parkview Course due to Hotel and Hershey Park expansion. Spring Creek is on some prime real estate and its future has come into question recently. What a shame to lose these community fixtures!
What a great episode.
Why is this not a multi million subscriber channel!
So laid back. Need more courses like this.
My favorite golf course shut down a few years ago and nature has taken it over but I remember every hole. I wish I could play it one more time.
Liked the little sitdown talk at 8:00. Nice vid dude.
“Is this a dangerous neighborhood?” Lmao
🤣🤣I was just going to comment on that, must be a predominantly minority neighborhood🤣🤣
@@pdubs7069 Yeah Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Samuel L Jackson and other dangerous characters :D
Miami’s city park courses are pet/pedestrian friendly.
One time, there was a group of teens playing a game of two-hand touch on the fairway of a par 4. They were respectful of golfers and lined the sides of the fairway when golfers played thru.
It was great watching them having fun and also neat having a gallery watching the golf too!
What a great little place!!! An intimate combination of history and nostalgia. There should be more "kid's courses" in the US.
Wow awesome episode Erik! I lived in LA for years and had no idea this existed.
another home run Erik!.....holy smokes!..... the irony is you kept it in the park
We have something similar in England called pitch and putt. When I was growing up, there used to be in our local parks but a lot of them have stopped being maintained, which is shame!
That's how I got into golf, going with my dad with a pitching wedge and a putter.
This reminds me of the par 3 course my son has grown up on. So freaking cool!
this was a cool episode. good stuff
such a cool spot to have a golf course in the middle of a park!
Great episode!
Favourite course is North Berwick! That’s awesome, hoping to play there on Thursday. Hope I agree.
short game ! love it :)
Love the music. Reminded me of Belle and Sebastian and have now looked up the artist Dan Pundak!
We have a beautiful little 6 hole Acadey course at Hoylake now, a road hole, a redan, a baiiritz, all the favourites
The one course Snowball belongs and he didn’t make the trip 😭
Nice job of picking the music to fit the vibe, this part of your game is greatly improving!
Erik you need to try out disc golf! It was my introduction to the basic rules of golf and now I play both as a hobby.
In the back of the VA in westwood, there is a 9 hole/par 3 that has a wonderful story. the course is maintained and operated by vets.
Come to Delaware park in Buffalo, we get picnics in the middle of fairways, and the course is built in an Olmsted parkway system. The rumor is the golden bear is doing a redesign!
In West Philadelphia born and raised, on the playground where I spent most of my days...
Reminds me of my local growing up 😁
Erik it's our pleasure watching. But please give us an insight on the music selection....
love the fact the guy thought "is this a dangerous neighboyr hood?"was a serious question.
one of the things I think of when deciding if I like the layout of a golf course is if I feel like it could be a good race track for the golf carts. Many courses have disjointed designs that don't flow well when walking/riding from one hole to the next.
“Have you ever had a hole in one on this course?” “Oh yeah.” “Does it count?” “Uhh...No.” That was the perfect delivery. Haha.
My favourite par three course would be in Stanley Park in Vancouver!
Wish I could register more likes for these videos.
Like his answer about a favorite course. Solid criteria! Agree that many newer courses are wayyyy to fussy and seem extremely unfriendly to walkers.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who says "OH" after I chunk a shot.
Hahahha
The first 1:20... I'm not crying, you're crying.
a true treasure
Erik you have to check out the San Clemente Muni... Also designed by William "Billy" Bell around the same time. $14 for a twilight round where you can practically taste the ocean...
there are courses here in uk that have soccer golf courses along side golf courses but different tees. just a fun idea but it helps
with the up keep of the main ,with the money side made. and play at a different time
Such a cool little park and another great attitude to golf from Geoff. Isn't the Playboy Mansion close by too?
yes
the house with the pie driveway is THE manor, aaron spellings old home. random fact #14
Hey Erik , I saw you put up a new mail opening video. It got deleted or removed. Didn’t know if you knew that.
As some probably know, that 'W'-shaped monstrosity of a house is the old (Aaron) Spelling Manor. Quaint 56,500 square feet.
Comment on one of Geoffs last statements about maybe golf courses should be closed on Sundays.
I think everything should be closed on Sunday, so we can all just chill out, kickback, do nothing or do something besides work or spend money.
I’d like to see golf clubs open there doors on Sunday to everyone to enjoy, probably would get more people into the game
awesome
EAL- “The dogs cost more than my rent”
“They do”
Dean Martin was a member @ Bel-Air
there are over 100 kinds of trees at holmby park. Random fact #34
There is a 9 hole course in a public park in Buffalo, NY threat people walk their dogs and the such on.
❤️
Hey what’s the song playing at 9:45? It’s a banger
Dear Erik , can you explain what "Very unique"?? lol
Does anyone know the title of the song at 9:40?
I like the idea of a different use for courses one day a week, but can't see St Andrews Old Course going for it 😂😂😂 you literally can't buy a tee time it's that busy!
Old Course is closed Sundays, no golf.
@@RandomGolfClubFilms wow! Well I did not know that! Every day is a school day as they say.
Well apart from when The Open is there or the Alfred Dunhill Links I guess?
$4 green fee. "No refund once play has commenced" Whilst sitting next to giant BH mansion. Something funny about that 3:32
what is the song he used???
Billy Bell for the win.
I feel that every kid that loved golf made a course like this in there own neighborhood, I know we did. (and so did the police)
I can’t remember a hole 5 min after playing it
What was the name of that song??
Geoff lookin like Davislove lll
I don't get the impression Shac really cares too much for Erik...and Erik kinda seems uncomfortable with the pairing.
Tbh not a fan of dogs on a golf course.. owners dont pick up poop after the doggos. And i saw 2 dogs off their leashes attack and kill a rabbit while i was playing. Since then havent been a fan. Looks like a nice course though. Love your channel mate. Keep it up.
⛳🏌♂
That golf course sucks.
HOW YOU DOING , DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT GOLF COURSES I OWN IN CALIFORNIA AND OTHER CITIES AND STATES IN AMERICA
