- My Ficus burtt-davyi gets a detailed prune after being repotted mid summer.
The species was named in honor of the botanist Joseph Burtt Davy, who worked in South Africa between 1903 and 1919.
He is commemorated in the genus name Burttdavya and in numerous specific epithets including Aloe davyana, Acacia davyi, Hibiscus burtt-davyi and Ficus burtt-davyi.

It’s hard to believe that “The Bonsai Zone 10” is right around the corner. Time truly does fly when you’re having fun. Thanks for all your hard work and interesting inspirational content. THANKS, KEEP GROWING
That leaf color is an interesting issue. I had a look back in time at the videos in the playlist of this tree and it seems like the color problem started once the dieback at the front occurred. And that was after you let those two main branches grow long at the top of the big chop. So this would suggest that it might be a nutrient supply problem. Grafting points are usually pretty obvious: big bulges, abrupt change in taper and/or bark appearance. As far as I can see there doesn't seem to be any clear sign of grafting.
Fingers crossed for the problem to solve itself, it would be too bad if you would have to make another big chop to fix this.
Every Nigel's pruning process is similar to a sudoku game. Calculating, making decisions. The difference is in that you know you won the game only at least 10 years later.
So true!!!
Nigel is truly awesome.
I kinda like the two different color leaf canopy. I know it's probably a nutrient issue, so it's best to fix it, but I can imagine some pretty cool looks for the tree if it was meant to be different! Love this tree, thanks as always Nigel!
Great little future tree. I always enjoy hearing the why of all your decisions.
I really appreciate your videos Nigel! Not only is it so pleasant to watch, but your explanation of your thought process helping you make decisions is so educational. Thank you for sharing :)
Nice trunk on the tree. Pruning will develop this tree into a good looking tree. Moss. Unique. Cool.
Thank you for telling us what you are thinking. Talking through it really helps.
That's a neat tree. I thought it used to be the same on both sides. I think if for some reason it is a graft or whatever causing the colour difference and it stays that way. You should keep it like that. It would be so unique. Like it has Vitiligo or something. It would definitely turn heads being two colours! I do believe it will go back to match on both sides though. This was a good video, thanks Nigel!
Thanks Marysol!!!!
HAY Nigel, I do believe that is a Natal Fig Ficus Natalensis which is closely related to but different to ficus Burtt-Davyi ... BD has The smooth bark of this Ficus is white/grey/silvery in colour and contrast nicely with the dark green leaves. The leaves are simple, alternate, elliptic to ovate in shape with the basal pair of veins forming a characteristic "V". The young leaves are sheathed in reddish brown stipules that add a ruddy colouring to the plant in certain seasons.
Natal or Natalensis leaves tend to be ( from those I have) a bit more dog tongue shape leaves more round at the end and ovate at the base like a dogs tongue coming out its mouth.
Im not really sure which this is as they are very similar adn possibly like figs here in Australia cross pollinate and end up with mixed plants. But Natal fig is Ficus Natalensis and ficus burtt-davyi Scrambling Fig; Veld Fig
Cool! Clip and Flow Bonsai with Professor Saunders.
I finally got my hands on a ficus religiosa!!!! Hoping next week they'll still have another. Want one to bonsai, one to let do what it wants.
Hi Jason, nice Christmas box,all I get is socks and pants.
I like it when old big cuts turn into holes in the tree. I picture an owl or squirrel making it’s home in there. I actually did this on purpose with a large cut, I dug into the tree a bit. It’s got a ways to go to look like a dark little animal home, but I thing one day it will have a cool effect.
I love your videos. Thanks Nigel. Keep up the good work.
This is a lovely tree in your collection. Your trimming videos are always so informative. I keep my pruning skills well honed by watching your videos. Kinda think there is an owl hiding in that hole in the trunk. LOL
Nice to catch the premiere, had to watch the video again tho :D
I really like the tree and the pot it's in. Nicely pruned, very good structure
💚💚💚
Nice recovery from it’s summer surgery. I’m guessing the color is attributed to the severe root work performed. We’ll find out in the future. Thanks, keep growing
A great species for bonsai. I've been searching every time I'm out looking for trees and I can't ever find one! The search shall continue..... THANKS Nigel! ❤️
If you're in the U.S., Planet Desert has Ficus natalensis in a 3.5" pot. I haven't ordered from them but I have friends who have and have had good luck with their plants.
@@GreenhornBonsai awesome! Thanks for the tip! I'll def check that out.
Nice work as always. That species of ficus looks very nice.
I trust you make the right decision but just to share my thinking I may have taken that lighter leaved part off. In any event it gonna be interesting to see how it develops and 🙏fingers crossed it eventually get more even coloured leaves all over..🙂
I think the colour difference could just be because the majority of the growth on the lighter side is newer growth. They should darken and balance out quite quickly.
hello from Belgium...
I think your tree is grafted because:
1) most industrial ficusses are grafted
2) it has an unnatural bulge (=healed grafting point)
Depends on the species. Benjamina are mostly made from cuttings. Ginseng ficusses are mostly grafted.
Hey Nigel, with all this pruning you're doing at the start of the winter temps, aren't you afraid the plants will be damaged as they won't show any new growth for another 3 months?
I have a portulacara to prune as was going to wait intill February. Thanks...
My name is John Epley from Marion North Carolina in the Appalachian mountains. I've been trying to get into Bonsais for 2 years I'm 67 and disabled from a motorcycle accident and really enjoy working on my trees. Can you tell me where I can get a natel ficus and a too little leaf ficus or a cutting I've not been able to find them? My ficus are my favorite but I have several other types.
Hello John, I'm not sure, I think you would have to check some of the nurseries in Florida, they will have them!!
@@TheBonsaiZone Thank you
If you're not interested in showing the tree, why not just keep the tree with the two leaf colors. It seems unique and interesting to me.
Do you ever defoliate or repot any of your tropicals over the winter?
Probably basic Q, but do Ficusses always excrete their milky residue throughout the year? When is best to trim/prune Ficusses?
Yes they do. Little bit less in winter. Just watch some of the playlists of Nigel. Everything will be explained.
👍👌
Probably sun light.
Iron deficiency possibly?
what if he cut his hair? just a little
He’d have to wear weirder clothes to look eccentric 🤪
Would I be able to get a cutting of your natal ficus? I am having trouble finding a natal ficus.
👍👍👍
What was the point of profile pruning? 😁
It sets the external profile boundary of the canopy.
👍
I say do not remove the off color foliage
It is possible new foliage will be normal. With evergreens i can imagine this happening.
Maybe it is some genetic variegation. Embrace it! you have special tree
