It's very simple: Max was the race leader, you don't attack the race leader that agressive
a champ has to react correctly to the mistake of others. verstappen is clearly not yet a champ. that was an amateur mistake as pointed out by hamilton.

In my opinion, Ocon would have never done the same manoeuvre if there had been a Mercedes... Don’t get me wrong. I know that a back-maker can unlap himself (it’s not against rules): but it must be a very clear manoeuvre. Ocon’s attempt was far way too risky… that’s the reason why I can’t escape the feeling that we would have never seen that kind of manoeuvre if there had been a Mercedes on the lead.
You are right that Ocon wouldn't have made that move on a Mercedes but that doesn't excuse Verstappen's idiotic cut into him. He could've taken avoiding action to preserve his lead by taking the outside line as there was a car very obviously on his inside but instead responded to a stupid maneuver with an even worse maneuver.

Apparently God, If back marker want to unlap himself, he can do it but he need to make that move to don't cost leader of time, and leader have all rights on earth to drive on racing line if back marker want to unlap himself (he don't need to defend and leave room to lapped car)
-So if lapped car want to unlap himself, he need to do it somehow to don't cost leader's time, in this case Ocon should wait better chance (eg. to overtake Max on straight before 1st corner as "he have much more pace than max" as Ocon said), or just stay behind leader, which is probably best to do, since cars will have blue flags and Ocon can use Max to easy overtake them without battle..

Not Verstappen's fault at all, definitely Ocon's fault. What is the point in overtaking the race leader with risk when you are one lap behind?
A lot can happen in the race. Changing the track position could be huge. He was on soft, fresh tires and was faster. Should lapped cars just park it?

In all my years of watching F1 (well like 12ish) ive never seen a backmarker decide to try unlap himself unless the leaders tyres are literally dead and have no pace left in them

Also he put his car in a stupid place, Raikonen made the same move on Bottas and Bottas backed out of the corner. They were fighting for position, Ocon was not fighting for anything.

Ocon was totally right to try to unlap himself, if that was hamilton on verstapen for first, it would be a racing incident, i dont get why it wasnt TBH.
Look up the lap times, with drs he was only 0.2 sec faster. Also if he were to get past the Red Bulls were the fastest in sector 2 by far so he would have to slow down for blue flags after a few corners anyway. Stupid move by Ocon. Shouldn't have tried to force Verstappen off of the racing line.
I had seen the replay of the Verstappen - Ocon accident many times, and I have to disagree with you. This will be Ocon´s fault even if they were racing together in the same lap. He was like half a car behind. But mostly I think that Verstappen didn´t even know Ocon is there on inside, he probably saw him in turn 1 braking zone, thinking that he just used DRS plus AMG engine, but expecting him to slow down and than continued in racing line..you know how hard is to see something from todays f1 car, and Esteban was exactly in Maxes blind spot..

@@breathebot3549 Since when is 30 cm (12 inches) in front being ahead of your opponent? That's side by side. An unwritten rule in racing world is front wheels on rear wheels, exactly that was the case in T2 for Verstappen. When you unlap yourself, you have to do that on a manner without blocking the other driver. So watch the situation again and tell us what you see. ;)
@@Woudam At the moment of turn in, ocon was defo half way along side (much more than front wheels on rear wheels) can see by damage to side of verstappens car, moment of contact is always gonna appear that ocon was further behind as he would see verstappen cutting across and have to brake hard. I think perhaps ocon should not have been there, but he was and at that point, verstappen lacked any situational awareness and just cut across him

Sorry Matt, But saying its 50/50 is the most stupid thing I heard since Ocon's excuse. Max could have left more room but had no reason to think that Ocon would be still there cause you can't hold up a race leader as back marker (ethically spoken)

Watching the race get more and more suspenseful only made me more excited for this today
Kimi was quick. he was just a few seconds of the lead. Vettel had a technical problem and pretty much tried to survive.

If you have already been lapped, I don't see any reason for you, trying to change the race that is currently going and not yours anymore. Passing is one, racing is another thing. If Ocon wanted to fight with Max for that corner than he should have fought for the second position first. I am sorry Matt but Ocon has all the blame, of course Max could have avoided the crash and it would have been better for him but the incident is all caused by Ocon.
Do me a favour and don't watch IndyCars or endurance racing. You'll have a fit because this sort of thing goes on all the time.
Max didn't need to cut him off at the apex. He knew Ocon was on the inside, he could see him but just turned across him expecting him not to be there. Ocon should have yielded earlier but Max should have used some sense and just taken a wider line in Turn 2 to beat him in Turn 3.
I am a bit of a Max fanboy and I think he should have given Ocon more room in T2. The problem is he should never have been in that situation. Ocon should have gotten the job done on the start-finish straight or waited for the T3-T4 straight. Trying to go in the inside into T2 was a massively idiotic move. If you are unlapping yourself the main thing is to do it safely. You shouldn't try to make the race interesting. I still think Ocon is a great driver, and he should have a seat next year, but I lost a lot of respect for him costing Max the win and not giving a proper apology. I had such high hopes when Max passed Lewis into T1 and he didn't even stand a chance. He was even catching Lewis with a damaged car. Anyway, good on Merc for their championships. Even if I hate them winning again. Ferrari and Vettel pissed it away this year. Hopefully it will be Max and Charles fighting for the WDC next year. It's time for someone new in my opinion. I really don't care who wins next year, as long as it's not a former WDC. Other than Kimi, if Kimi wins for Sauber I'll happily eat a shoe.
Why was Ocon such a bloke? He immigrated Verstappen after the race. Why overtake the race leader? He could have backed off before turn 2. His race was dead anyway. This really shows that Ocon should NOT (emphasis on NOT) have a seat after this season. As much as I feel for Ocon, this was not the right move. It's a replica of Daniel Kyvat's crash with Sebastian (not a replica of the crash but them acting s****d while racing). He has no excuse. If he would have re-lapped the leader, he would have gotten a blue flag anyway in the next 2 laps for sure. This move was not necessary! 100% Ocon's fault. He uses Max's reaction after the race to show his innocence. He wanted Max to react the way he did. Why did he have to exaggerate in the Interviews? He is a baby and that's it. Just look at his face in the fight after the race. How do people not realize that he is not innocent? Ocon fans say that Max did not leave any space. Well does he have too? No, he does not. Why battle the race leader if you're in a lapped car? There is no point. A 10-second penalty is pathetic. He should have been disqualified.

Not sure you can blame Max. Mind you Ocon was a lap down and as much as Ocon may have a right to unlap himself going for a risky move on the race leader and expecting clean racing was way too naive. Ocon should have pulled back and allowed Max take the corner. This is not about customs of race craft, they don’t apply when you’re a lap down. If you are going to overtake the guy in front, whilst a lap down, the leader has the final say. Not sure what was going through Ocon’s head at the time, perhaps nervous about Sauber overtaking then in the constructors but it was unequivocally some of the poorest racing I’ve seen in a long time. This isn’t a question of who is a Max fan and who is not, it was just straight up dumb of Ocon and disrespectful, and people who brand it as Max fans vs. the rest are as partisan as Max fans who condone him from running Vettel off the road.
This is not about customs of race craft, they don’t apply when you’re a lap down - where did you get this? Why general racing rules, like "leave the space to the other driver" suddenly stop working? It doesn't matter if you're lapped and you're trying to overtake or whatever. Rules are rules, and you can't say that your own inventions are correct just because you want them to.

It was not risky though. It was a perfectly good pass. What makes it risky is Verstappens aggressive defending. Ocon was nearly half a car up his inside, which means Vestappen had to yield.

Ricciardo had the same car that year and couldn't do what he did also if you watch his Formula 3 races in the rain you can see that he is very good in the rain.

Its simple, you see the blue flag, you let the race leader past, tjats the amount of respect you should give the person 13 places, and a full lap ahead of you. There was no point in contesting for Ocon, he would have just gotten lapped two corners later. Im not saying you are not allowed to overtake, there was just nothing he could ever gain from it.

Firstly turn 2 is not a spot to dive it down the inside when challenging for position, plus max was ahead by a good amount and really didn’t even take any kerb of turn 2 because he was there. Verstappen was in front. Ocon should have lifted. If this wasn't a lapt car it woudn't have been max his fould. Look at the image max coud have left more room. But if he did it would have been a weaknis. And as Senna showed us when you let room one's you always wil.

Most circuit rules and regulations and general racing rules usually state if the overtaking car and defending car go into a corner wheel to wheel or side by side then the corner belongs to the overtaking car. Of course many situations and circumstances for how this works varies but Verstappen should have left the space and not turned in but Ocon should have not been so aggressive into turn 2 so I agree with Matt on the 50/50 thing. Lol
