If you didn't cry after listening to this, you've either got a stone heart or a glass eye. She's a fabulous singer--perfect diction, breath control, phrasing--and HEART. Norway should be very proud of her--and this beautiful work that touches hearts.
Her voice is crystal clear and beautiful to hear. I first heard this when I was a boy in 1950 in Brooklyn, New York. It was the closing theme to the live TV show I Remember Mama, starring Peggy Wood. Decades later, I saw the movie with Irene Dunne and fell in love again. But, it was several decades before I learned that Våren was written by Edvard Grieg! Now, I play it on my own instruments (Mark VI Tenor sax, Kessler Model 2 Bass Clarinet, and Buffet-Crampon R-13 Clarinet. It's beautiful no matter which instrument is used. Whenever a fellow musician hears me "warm up" with Våren, I get compliments.
Wonderful Grieg, and Sissel.......wonderful interpretation.....her expression helps a lot to enjoy the song. when she smiles.......it comes the spring too
When she sings looking at the camera, she hypnotizes me, with her angel voice and celestial beauty ! Beautiful, very beautiful! Tks, Sisselfan...as I would like to be in Bergen, tomorrow, for listen in the room Grieg. but that is impossible. Again thank you, and also for the translation! Walter (Brazil)
Such a lovely voice; this is a soprano with the talent and look for been one of the most important ones!!!.I like her very much. She touches my soul...Bravooo!!!!
SISSEL'S VOICE IS PERFECT FOR GRIEG'S MUSIC...KIND OF MOURNFUL, YET VERY VERY SWEET.I FIRST HEARD HER SING AT THE OPENING OF THE WINTER GAMES IN L(?). I WONDERED...'WHO IS THIS BEAUTIFUL SINGER?' LATER A NORWEGIAN FRIEND TOLD ME AND I THOUGHT THAT THE WORLD SHOULD HEAR HER.
Thanks for uploading this - I'm currently learning this song myself and trying to get my tongue around the Norwegian isn't easy but it's great to hear someone with such clear diction! Great help, thanks! :)
This well-produced video, subtitles provided, brings to a world-wide audience a beautiful singer, a beautiful language and beautiful music. - John Austin, Australia
Edvard Grieg would undoubtedly be ecstatic at the stunning performance of his music. The purity of her golden voice is heightened only by the intense expressiveness and sensitivity to the music.
My heart flows up to the ligth of her singing, ...oh what little is left and how much still for all!!!. But I am a drain glass, ready to stop filling up. Thanks to Sissel for giving me joy now...when most needed!!!
Sisselfan, It's impossible to find words to describe the magic flowing out out of her voice. With her own style and tune, Sissel may sing in any voice and will always be captivating and fascinating. Pleased the most, and, naturally, thankfull for remebering me when you uploaded this master piece. Your friend, Jacques
@furmitten publicity engine? Well, I don't really know what you're talking about, because I was just surfing on UA-cam to find different versions of one of my favorite compositions and I found this version. I didn't even know who Sissel was. I can say that this is the best performance I've ever heard. It goes right through my soul an makes me cry of joy. This is all what music is about and I don't care about theoretical stuff about some 'nuances, shading and power'. Sorry.
Sissel is often criticized by armchair opera "experts" for not displaying enough emotion when singing classical songs. These people don't know how to listen or watch. Her ability to express emotion through tonality is incredible and together with the expressiveness of her face, she communicates the emotion of her songs more clearly than any "real" opera singer I have ever heard.
@ketillflatnefur the reason she's smiling so much is because she's doing what most stage singers call "flirting with the audience". it's one of the most important things about singing on the stage, dragging everybody in the hall into your performance. which is also why she never really rests her eyes on one set thing (except when she's looking straight at the camera), she keeps moving her line of sight. it's one of the first things most singing teachers teach you, actually.
Here are some of the words........ Winter is over, the snow melts away Sweet Spring comes with gladness. Sunshine falls warm on the young hawthorn spray; I walk with my sadness. Waters once frozen are flowing to the sea, The rivers are roaring. All that I love for the last time comes to me, My dear larks are soaring. Though I must pass yet the clear voice of a bird Welcomes a newcomer. He will rejoice in the songs that I have heard Of sunlight and summer.
Once more I got to behold winter Fleeing before the spring; Hackberry with trees covered by blossoms, I once more saw blooming. Once more I got to behold the ice Flowing from land, The snow softening, and waterfall into river Buzzing and bursting. The green grass I once again got To behold with blooms. Still I heard the spring fowl sing, To sun and to summer.
Once more I received the blessing, Of hearing the cuckoo. Once more I wandered the field Where they drove the plow. Once more I beheld and was warmed By the wind and the meadow; To behold the earth like with longing chest, Sighing in bed. Spring cloud drifting there to and fro, And cloud banks billowing. Then thunder struck from the clouds, And cracked and rolled.
I had yet to see heat shimmers Dance upon the hills. Butterflies fluttering and flying off Where blooms stood gathered. All this spring life I once more beheld, Which later I lost. But I am melancholy and ask myself must: Might it be the last? Let It so be: I had much beauty, To enjoy in life. More I received than I had deserved, And all things must end.
Sometime I will in the springtime haze, Which sates my eye. Sometime I there will find me a home, And swim and bathe. Everything that the spring greeted me with, and the bloom I plucked. I thought It was the spirits of the forefathers, That danced and sighed. Therefore I found between birches and bark, A riddle in spring. Therefore the sound from the flute I carved, Seemed to be weeping.
I took furmitten's advice, and listened to Karita Mattila version. While very nice ,I enjoy Sissel much more. Powerful voices were developed before microphones, and purity was lost.
Try the Kirsten Flagstad version - she was a Wagnerian soprano with a lyric voice. I grew up listening to her sing this. Sissel’s version is excellent as well.
@furmitten Interesting that a page or two down in these comments an actual operatic tenor thinks she has, "Such a lovely voice … . I like her very much. She touches my soul...Bravooo!!!!". Other ignorant people like Placido Domingo and Bryn Terfel have made similar comments during their multiple performances with her. But now, thankfully, we have you to set us straight … Bravo!!!
@achantus1 Most Southeast-Norwegians are proud that we have different "languages" here in Norway. The part some "hate" is the fact that we are tought both in school. It is difficult to learn two such similar languages for many people. But, yes, she is singing in Nynorsk, a constructed language based on different Norwegian dialects, and not Bokmål, wich is mostly based on Danish, and that is the language we mostly use in Southeast-Norway. No one really speaks either one of them.
all good singers can do different things with their voice -alter it to suit the occasion. Here is a perfect example: her voice seems to come from outside of her, a suspended tone somewhere above her.
Did you listen to Kirsten Flagstad? There are two versions on the net, the one of the younger Kirsten Flagstad is just unbelievable. I could't find anything more touching, and its not instead of skill but because of it. Just my personal opinion.
I found the Norwegian to be a breeze when I had someone sound it out for me and tell me what the different characters sounded like. If you can find the sheet music, I suggest trying that and writing the pronunciations in.
Hei.

I love Sissel's sweet pure voice - so unaffected and innocent sounding. The other recording I love is Alison Trainer.

Yes.1948 version
Sissel voice is absolutelly unparalleled bright, crystalclear, heavenly
Syssel er saa god synger at man kan ikke ligne henne med noen annen.
Helt riktig. En vakker kvinne med en vakker stemme.
Nomenclature fails when trying to express the beauty of this creation.
I think Grieg should be very proud!

Beautiful silky voice! Thanks for the post.
The orchestra lets her down a bit, IMO, and the Piano comes across cheesy.
