- Just a basic 'how-to' video on how to disassemble my ww2 k98 rifle (deactivated).
I'm not too happy with the way the video turned out... it turns out that rifles are really difficult to video in detail due to their size, and the video quality varies because of the white cloth in the background :|

I was pretty heartbroken to find out that this rifle was “deactivated” at the end. Words cannot describe the horror of such an act. Such a magnificent piece of history was essentially gilded forever.

Its only the firing pin i believe. They real firing pin that matched probably wasn't ground down and was probably rather replaced with a replica and that one was ground down.

I got my Kar98 Mauser rifle last month. Best shooting firearm I've gotten my hands on. Seeing this video has given some insight on how to break it down. However, seeing the barrel hacked up like that makes me sad. Hate to see a piece of history cut up like that.

If the government told me I would have to take the ww2 rifles that my grandfather owned and cared for and destroy the barrel like a piece of meaningless trash, I would lose faith in my country.

This is really a nice video showing the complete disassembly. I was looking at my K98 Mauser earlier today. Will do a bolt disassembly in the near future. Video was quite helpful. It's a shame that in your country that the gun had to be deactivated. It was tough to see how the barrel was destroyed. I think of possibly shooting my rifle at the range. Uncertain though, since it is an all matching example. The K98 has one of the nicest bolt action ever designed. A very well built and robust rifle.

They can “deactivate” my guns (including my byf 44 Mauser that my great grandfather brought back from the battle of the bulge) when they take them all out of my cold dead arms.

I'm not going to lie, I cringed when I saw that deactivated barrel. It's a shame that an actual all matching k98 was deactivated. But I can't blame you for purchasing this example, if I lived in the U.K. I would probably have a collection of deactivated WW2 weapons too. I love shooting my WW2 weapons, but If I was in your position I would sacrifice the shooting aspect of the rifle for a pure collectors piece.

I just got one and mine actually works. Got it for $250. Took all day for me to clean all the preservation fluid off and out of it. Thanks for these videos. Really helped me strip it so I could clean and oil it for service.
Do yourselves a favor, and don’t live in a country that would make you “deactivate” an Almost completely obsolete beautiful valuable timeless war artifact just because they don’t like guns. What a heartbreaking sight. Well, other than that, very simple and helpful video. Thankyou.

No,its a deactivated k98,which is a non operating piece of ww2 history which is allowed in the u.k in that state.
My heat almost stopped when I saw that barrell..., sad. Useful video anyway.
To all the Americans (and any other nationality) commenting that guns are banned in the UK, No offence but your making an assumption based out of Ignorance about another countries Gun laws, I am the member of a shooting Club here in the UK and we have plenty of members with old Military rifles in original working and shooting condition (Lee Enfields, Mosin Nagant, K98 etc), If you are a Firearms Certificate holder then there is no reason why you cannot have an original Mauser K98 in original working and shooting condition and use it for things like practice or competition. If you cannot apply for a FAC due to having a criminal record or a mental health condition or want to do historic re-enactments for example then a DEAC(deactivated) rifle is the option you have to go for if you like collecting historic rifles. We even have clubs that shoot .50 cal's here in UK, yes we are restricted in the UK, but that doesn't mean we can't still shoot anything.
PS, made me quite sad too to see it cut up like that as well
Great video Evo, but a few changes to nomenclature are needed:
Strap = sling
Other pieces = safety and bolt shroud
Magazine guard = magazine floorplate
Ring - barrel band
Recoil damper - is not a recoil damper but a transverse reinforcing plate that the recoil lug on the action rests against.
Also, you might want to invest in some gunsmith's (parallel sided) screwdrivers to save potentially messing up screw slots.

Technicaly restoration is possible, for smaler caliber and power,since the receiver was damaged too.. So we are waiting for better times...
The Mauser 98 service rifle is beautiful and has a strong front locking action that can be readily rechambered for a wide range of rimless hunting rounds like the 9.3x62mm big game round, but was a second-rate service rifle. The simpler and more robust Mosin-Nagant (pronounced ‘Mo-seen Na-gon’) - which was affectionately called the “Mosinka” by Russian soldiers - is a much better service rifle thanks in large part to its quick release magazine floorplate that allows quick and easy cleaning if dust, sand, dirt or mud gets into the action without the use of tools.
Even better is the Lee-Enfield service rifle which had a rear locking action that was far easier to clean if dust, sand, dirt or mud got into the locking lug recesses, and uses easily cleaned quick detachable 10 round magazine (double the capacity of the 98 and Mosinka which use non-detachable magazines). You can also single load a round directly into the chamber of the Mosinka and Lee-Enfield if something went wrong with the magazine without a problem, but try doing so with the 98 and you will likely break the extractor.
The best Mauser type rifle is clearly the contemporary CRF Winchester Model 70 which has a quick release magazine floorplate, a coned breech, an easy to use 3-positon side-swing safety that facilitates the use of a low mounted telescopic sight (I favor a simple 4x scope), and a bevelled extractor that allows you to single load a round directly into the chamber without breaking the extractor.
That said, if I had to grab one of these rifles for use in any conditions I would grab a Lee-Enfield (No. 5 “Jungle Carbine”), but would favor a Mosinka (M38 Carbine) if I wanted the most rugged rifle; though the M70 is arguably better for use against dangerous game thanks to its CRF action and coned breech (better feed reliability) and a safety that is much easier to use than those used by the 98 and the Mosinka (if not the Lee-Enfield). If debris gets into the front locking lugs recesses of the 98, Mosinka or M70 you will want a toothbrush and a water canteen to clean it out.
Lee-Enfield rifles in good condition are no longer readily available but Mosinkas are. The Molot KO-91/30 M hunting rifle is essentially a refurbished Mosin-Nagant M91/30 service rifle with a shorter barrel, a turned down bolt handle to facilitate the use of telescopic sights, and a quick detach side mount like that those fitted to AK-47 assault rifles.
A little awkward and slow if something is trying to kill you and you need to reload but cannot do so from the magazine due to damage or parts loss, but it is good to know that it can be reloaded in this fashion.
Ahh right, at 7:59 its not very easy to read and does look like 'LL' but it is actually 'CE' which is the code for J.P. Sauer - its just the style of the letters that make them look different.
I wonder if the receiver is untouched. If it is you might be able to change out the barrel. That might get it back into firing condition... The real question is if there is another defect that caused them to deactivate it in the first place.

It is a video that is very well done, but at the same time my blood boils seeing how the government required its demilling. Any government that is afraid of gun owners is not a Government with the interest and well being of its people involved. Semper Fidelis🇺🇸

hey my k98 does not have the safety screws that are part of your k98 is that common or do i have a different model?
Hi, I own one of them, but I have a heavy bolt action issue when opening, do you know what the reason is?
I need help. I pulled the bolt out with the safety off. Once I removed the bolt, I pushed in the plunger and the rear of the bolt is locked into place. I can't get it to go back. When I put the bolt back in, the handle blocks my view of the sights.

it should only go up to where the front sight is.. any longer than that then you may have the wrong size cleaning rod.
Beautiful gun and presentation of a good disassembly other than I would probably use a well-fitted screwdriver other than a pocket knife but that's here nor there it's representing an idea. It absolutely kills me that they demilled that beautiful rifle mate thanks, nice video I have one to 1039 it was a vet bring back. They are amazing rifles. I hit a 35 Cm target at 400 yards with 1944 stamped yugo amno iron sights. Well mate that my bragging thanks again for the great vid straight on no BSing

The video is pretty good, so thank you, but that de-milled barrel is a disgrace. (can't say what I really want to here).
Couple of things. One, they don't bend the screw heads. They are ground flush after being put in place and then a new slot is cut. Second, it isn't a recoil damper. It's a recoil shield, and it's purpose is to prevent stock splitting, not absorb recoil forces.

Thank you for the video, and the good instruction. I am so happy I live in a country that (for now) gives me the freedom to own and shoot rifles and handguns, and get a license to order guns like this right to my door.
"apply for a rifle license" man.... sorry you have to go through that. I know the politicians here are working their hardest to take our freedoms, too. Or regulate them even more.
It's a shame what was done to that rifle to deactivate it. I can almost understand the ATF deactivating full auto machine gun barrels, but it's just absolutely beyond stupid to ever require it for a dang 70 year old bolt action rifle.

My bolt on my 1893 Turk is different. It is impossible to have my safety straight up and be able to remove the bolt at the same time. I have only figured out how to take my bolt head off. How do I take my bolt apart? It is straight handle

no worries :) I personally dont mind who made the guns as long as they are in good condition etc. I see your Portuguese mauser will be dated between 1934 and 1938? and yes the S/42 was the manufacture code for Oberndorf. They changed to code from 'S/42' to just '42' after 1938- according to my information anyway!

+Wehrmacht Bunny collection; this way you can own the gun without the need for firearm licenses and all the burocracy associated with owning a gun (im in italy and got deactivated the grandpa hunting rifle since i dont shoot and getting a license just to own it legally would be way too expensive just for the sake of keeping it)

the gun law just changed this year here; before it was easier (less papers) to own one without using it (aka collection license) but now you have to do same burocracy and courses as hunter and sport shooting

What type of specific mauser rifle do you have? And is your bolt matching your rifle?
ALPENJAGER It’s all figured out now.
It was a yugo capture k98k with all matching yugo serial numbers. The bolt was from a kar98az rifle. This makes sense given that the Germans did use a number of those during WWII. The Yugos just happened to mix up the bolt during the rebuild process.
Being a WWII reenactor, I did purchase the correct bolt, but I will make sure to keep the “original” bolt in my possession because of the matching yugo numbers.

I own a K98K Portuguese with S/42 on top, so that clearly states it was made in Oberndorf.

MY CAPTURE SCREWS WONT MOVE! no matter how hard I turn them I cant get them to move. what do I do?
Try to turn a little bit on the big main screw, it can make the small one go loose. Use WD-40 spray or something like it. Can it not be turned around at all? Maybe try a bigger screwdriver that gives you more power. Or is it loose, but just can't come up? When it's off you can just leave it off, the capture scews are not needed. I don't use them on my K98.

I was loving he video and then the horror came to see the deactivated barrel. For history sake I hope people will cease to do this (not saying you did but I understand to own it in some countries that’s what has to be done). So sad to see these firearms destroyed in functionality

In mij K98 ( sadly a K98 converted to hunting rifle ) the complete bolt is welded in place and cant strip it further then just detaching the trigger gaurd and the wood work.
Also seen ur video of the luger..... here in the netherlands u should weld it completely solid, cut it in half an atach it to a piece of wood and then they call it 'deactivated'
But nice k98, sadly the wood is a little bit beaten up :P

Just picked up a French-made mouser from 1945 can't wait to shoot it
Well it can be rebarreled and the receiver can be Tig welded and rechase the threading. The receiver will have to be heat treated again but I would not run it with an 8 mm barrel, maybe .308 at the most. Who would cut the receiver? By American collectors standards someone seriously fucked up the value of the firearm, especially if the serial numbers matched on all of the pieces.
