I think, the quickest way to change this trend is to make the hype of content of movie from start, even the mass masala movie pull off audience by making hype from initial stage to release, content oriented movies majorly come and go without making people aware of it, yes, all this could be costly but this is what it is. Even lapata ladies released and i was unaware of it.

I swear. I fell in love with the phool girl. ❤ Kitni achi makeup and expressions and she has a sweet innicence in her face. Even Dipak ka casting was amazing. Unn dono ki jodi dekh kar Acha laga. And even Dipaks family is shown to be simple nice people. Not some evil village MIL and FIL. That was also refreshing 😊
Laapata Ladies is such a feel good movie. It conveys its message without being preachy or demonising those following certain traditions. Its message on feminism is subtle and effective. Loved everything about it!

Not actually, these movies are made for an unique mindset of cinema people. Very few people go to theatre to enjoy such critical story based movies. Most of the people are not of that mindset. They go to theatre mostly for having temporary fun , a good laugh or enjoy some actions. For me I rarely go to theatre, sometimes on a date. Gotta say these aren't for that occasion. A horror or comedy is much more preferred. But u get the gist.

We all love varun grover and his craft but it doesn’t mean that everything he create is masterpiece, stop calling everything gem, this was his below average work, nostalgia essence was there but somewhere story got distracted, varun ne banayi hai to bass aankh bnd krke taareef kar do.
I have always made sure to watch good underrated movies in theatres. My last three movies which I watched in theatres are Madgaon Express (With all my friends), Laapata Ladies (With my whole family), 12th Fail (With my whole family) I have dedicated my money to pure cinema and that makes me proud. It doesn't make sense to watch only big budget movies in Theatres and to watch the much better small budget movies on OTT.
Basically bhot log theatre mein pictures dekhne nahi jaatey ye bolke ki thode dino mein OTT pe toh release ho hi jayegi but for the movies of mega stars unke fans theatres mein movie dekhne challe jaate , kayi baar toh wahi fans vo movie baar baar dekh lette hai. Its all depends on Public, what they accept and what they don't! Lapata Ladies is really a masterpiece after a long time in Bollywood....we are failing as an audience not being able to recognise work and appreciating actual hard work.....I have watched lapata Ladies in theaters ...this film should be released in small villages.... specifically to the ladies it will really get its recognition... because the audience in Metro city is looking at movie as entertainment not on purpose of getting insight of society...if film released in the rural area you will be able to find it impact

I am happy that finally, on some platforms, these movies and shows are receiving the attention and value they deserve. It's sad that they're not getting that recognition in theaters, but at least they have some space now. Not like some years back when they went totally unnoticed, and after years, you'd watch that movie by accident and be like, 'Wow, what a movie it was,' for example, 'No Smoking.' But at least now, OTT platforms are giving them the space to shine where content matters.
The reason is HIGH TICKET PRICE in Multiplex, most of the Audience comes from middle class, and while choosing which movie to watch, most of middle class wants to go with a big celebrity name or banner. There mindset is simple if i have 2 thousand to spend on a movie date, most of people will spend it on a senseless salman movie, they will never go anywhere near to a content driven movie.

Laapata Ladies had one of the longest theatrical runs in recent times. It was a profitable venture (apparently) but the limited release & near zero marketing helped as much as LSC's profits.
There is another difference in my view, in theatre people want to see larger-than-life projects (sound effect, costumes, locations ) , laapata ladies and all India rank are project which we as audience comfortable watching on small screen. Somewhere producer need see which project will be more accepted on which platform as its their risk. Laspata ladies has gained soo much because it got released on OTT but if it was released on TV it would have flopped Another example : the Kapil show is again tanked on OTT.
Great review bro but I think a big factor why Laapata Ladies didn't work financially lies in the way distribution and production studio behind it. Laapata Ladies comes under the banner of Aamir khan productions which has a great track record of releasing content oriented films. Kiran Rao being a good director must had the leverage of negotiating with ott platforms and film distributors for the release but for some reason I think they didn't. I think its a collective problem which involves all audiences, makers and distributors.

Tbh even though i like to watch content driven movies but after the ott dumps during covid, I only go to theatres for cinematic larger than life movies (Not pathan, Tiger zinda hai, tiger shroff, Salman khan shit) but like Shaitaan, Vikram Vedha, Animal etc. Coz jab i already know i am gonna get movies like lapta ladies within a month and half on an OTT i am already paying for toh why would I visit theatres except for great visual masterpieces which can only be enjoyed on a big screen. 🤷🏼♂️

For me, movie theatres are for experiencing a mindless masala movie that does not need much effort or thought. This is not to say that seeing the good movies at the theatre is a waste of money, which it certainly isn't, but I think that we as the audience members now just haopen to have more diverse options in how to we want to experience movies and TV shows.

Lapata Ladies is really a masterpiece after a long time in Bollywood....we are failing as an audience not being able to recognise work and appreciating actual hard work.....I have watched lapata Ladies in theaters ...this film should be released in small villages.... specifically to the ladies it will really get its recognition... because the audience in Metro city is looking at movie as entertainment not on purpose of getting insight of society...if film released in the rural area you will be able to find it impact

This honestly needs a lot of discussion. As cinema is art and art is an an important part of culture. It's honesty quite alarming that the in the current Indian climate good art gets so terribly overlooked. I seriously can't imagine another "Rang De Basanti" happening in India anytime soon

dont blame the industry, its the audience who keeps on choosing these star kids above the talent. So the producers choose the ones who can get the people to theatres and give them money.

I am happy that finally, on some platforms, these movies and shows are receiving the attention and value they deserve. It's sad that they're not getting that recognition in theaters, but at least they have some space now. Not like some years back when they went totally unnoticed, and after years, you'd watch that movie by accident and be like, 'Wow, what a movie it was,' for example, 'No Smoking.' But at least now, OTT platforms are giving them the space to shine where content matters.
The reason is HIGH TICKET PRICE in Multiplex, most of the Audience comes from middle class, and while choosing which movie to watch, most of middle class wants to go with a big celebrity name or banner. There mindset is simple if i have 2 thousand to spend on a movie date, most of people will spend it on a senseless salman movie, they will never go anywhere near to a content driven movie.
American audience is also same but they make good big budget movie

One major problem is in this country is that purchasing power is in hands of man or wahi bikta hai jo aadmi dekhna chahta hai ye bhi ek bada reason ki women centric movies pit jaati hai qki is desh ke aadmiyon ko mini skirt mai item song karti ladkiya hi screen par achhi lagti hai baaki esi movies ko femenist propaganda keh ke hata diya jata hai bhale hi wesa juch ho n.
Laapata Ladies had one of the longest theatrical runs in recent times.
It was a profitable venture (apparently) but the limited release & near zero marketing helped as much as LSC's profits.
There is another difference in my view, in theatre people want to see larger-than-life projects (sound effect, costumes, locations ) , laapata ladies and all India rank are project which we as audience comfortable watching on small screen.
Somewhere producer need see which project will be more accepted on which platform as its their risk. Laspata ladies has gained soo much because it got released on OTT but if it was released on TV it would have flopped
Another example : the Kapil show is again tanked on OTT.

Hollywood, it’s the brand that’s more emphasized than the actor where as in India, it’s the actor who’s more popular than the brand.

Great review bro but I think a big factor why Laapata Ladies didn't work financially lies in the way distribution and production studio behind it. Laapata Ladies comes under the banner of Aamir khan productions which has a great track record of releasing content oriented films. Kiran Rao being a good director must had the leverage of negotiating with ott platforms and film distributors for the release but for some reason I think they didn't. I think its a collective problem which involves all audiences, makers and distributors.

You know why content based films suffer in terms of BO numbers ....because audience get disappointed and their budget (for spending on Film tickets and popcorns )also gets disturbed after watching films like Archies ,BMCM, Gadar 2 , Crew , Salaar..

Tbh even though i like to watch content driven movies but after the ott dumps during covid, I only go to theatres for cinematic larger than life movies (Not pathan, Tiger zinda hai, tiger shroff, Salman khan shit) but like Shaitaan, Vikram Vedha, Animal etc.
Coz jab i already know i am gonna get movies like lapta ladies within a month and half on an OTT i am already paying for toh why would I visit theatres except for great visual masterpieces which can only be enjoyed on a big screen. 🤷🏼♂️
I am happy that in nepal people just only dont watch masala family entertainers but appreciate content driven cinema also.

I'm a student but a film enthusiast. Main films dekhne hall nahi jaati aur naa hi jaa sakti hoon filhal, because of my study commitments. Neither for Animal nor for Laapata Ladies. But jo log jaa rahe hain film dekhne, logon ki taste itne kharab kaise ho rahe hain. They are not even give any chance to small budget good films. C'mon guys.

Thanks to ppl like shan we are getting aware for Bollywood hypocrisy although I'm a person who don't watch much movies wether ott or in theatre but i watch movies recommended by shan and belive me they are absolutely fabulous masterpieces plus घूंघट प्रथा was one the परंपरा our society followed not as an act of respect but it was to protect ladies from मुगल as we all know how they were to female so its not originally our tradition but a thing to protect female from the man lust

Your points may be right, but have you maybe considered that the straight release to OTT movies may not be fit for the box office because viewers like us enjoy watching movies like "Laapata Ladies" in the comfort of our own homes, in a space where we can give the time and effort to delve ourselves fully into these movies accompanied by dinner on our laps, while the big masala action movies are for the big screen for the experience.

@@lakshmikrithika2521 EXACTLY! We paused several times during the movie to discuss so much. For me, movie theatres are for experiencing a mindless masala movie that does not need much effort or thought. This is not to say that seeing the good movies at the theatre is a waste of money, which it certainly isn't, but I think that we as the audience members now just haopen to have more diverse options in how to we want to experience movies and TV shows.
