Summary:
After years of life on the road and with their role models, the Allman Brothers Band, struggling to survive the deaths of two of its most distinctively talented members, today Lynyrd Skynyrd has become the quintessential Southern Rock band. Under the leadership of frontman and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, the group's melodic lyric driven ballads and power driven hard rockers would catapult the group into one of the most popular touring bands in the world. The group's distinctive guitar attack, combined with an overtly defiant and rebellious attitude, gave them a cultural identity that would help make songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" into anthems of American rock music and staples of FM radio right up to the present day.
Headlining a bill that also featured the Outlaws, this Winterland recording captures Lynyrd Skynyrd following the release of their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. This was during a transitional phase for the band, following the departure of guitarist Ed King, but prior to his replacement, Steve Gaines, coming on board. The band was carrying on as a six-piece unit, augmented by the Honkettes on backing vocals.
This is an interesting time to hear the band live, as their trademark three-guitar attack was reduced by one guitar, leaving more room for keyboardist Billy Powell. On the ballads, like "Tuesdays Gone" and the pre-jam verses of "Freebird," Powell displays great creativity and expands the keyboard's role in these songs.
Otherwise, the band rocks as hard as ever, with a good selection of their most popular songs, sampling a bit from all four of their studio albums. The group's defiant Southern swagger, combined with an infectious guitar and piano driven groove, creates an irresistible combination that resonated far beyond the Southern states. Two of the standouts on this show are both well chosen covers, which the band redefines as their own; J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" and Jimmy Rogers' "T For Texas." Both of these are rearranged in classic Skynyrd style, with the latter closing the set and clearly displaying the root sound of the band at its best.
The audience demands an encore and the band obliges with a monumental "Free Bird." It begins as a plaintive slow ballad, with Van Zant's distinctively sad vocals over the melodic keyboard playing of Powell and delicate slide guitar ornamentation from Rossington. However, it is the second section, which becomes an up-tempo guitar boogie, that really hits home. Here the guitarists cut loose to create one of the most distinctive solos of all time. Rossington and Collins turn this section into a soaring jam that also features impressive melodic bass playing from Wilkeson and furious keyboards from Powell. Following a brief reprise of the song, they turn on a dime back into the groove of the jam before bringing it to a climactic close.
"Free Bird," more often than not, sarcastically, would become the most requested song of all time. For musicians, this inevitable request has become so tiresome, that the act of requesting it has become universally known as "the mantra of the moron." Still, this only goes to prove just how deeply this song has permeated American culture and is a testament to its enduring popularity, making it one of the true landmark rock songs of twentieth century music.
that man right there changed my diaper when I was a baby. he was good friends with my brother Chuck while we lived in Jacksonville.

Bullshit
Never mind they pay out for shit here
@@bradsargent1907 ..No.., Baby shit.. ✌💀🎸
R.I.P Gary. Always loved his solo on Saturday Night Special, one of my favorites. Not fast or flashy but played with so much feel and soul.
Ronnie VanZant just taking a step forward, rasing his mic stand, leveling his eyes to the crowd & opening his mouth is one of the most aggressive & intimidating things i have ever seen on stage. Its scary the attention he commands simply by his presence & demeanor , as he man handles that mic stand & effortlessly releases all that power... He was The alpha dog front man of all time, no one even comes close. Similar to SRV, in that he was onee of a kind, you wontnt see their kindnever really see another
I love it when Rossington starts his guitar solo and RVZ tells him "Sit down on it." I l9ve these guys!!
One of Ed King's many great riffs. RIP Ed!
Could you just imagine if they was alive today the music they put out would crush the charts. RIP RONNIE, STEVE, CASSIE. MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN
The best ever, what a tragedy!!!
Cmon Steve we got a gig to play if gods gonna down this plane he's gonna down it!
Don’t forget Dean Kilpatrick
By far the Greatest American rock band ever!!!!💙🧡💚💜♥️
They are mostly all gone now very sad I think Gary is still with us out of the original band
They got a bad ass groove going on there
@Tommy Haynes Your comment put a big smile on my face. One of the best comments I’ve ever seen about a music video.By the way, I totally agree with you.
I am a black man who loved all the funk and disco of the 70's this song makes my feet move it has a great groove . These videos show how freaking tight they were
I was at Winterland for this show . Still amazed at how they played songs note for note the same as they were recorded
Becasue Skynyrd was real and played it like it is, the whole band had talent...
One of the reason skynrds live albums are so awesome, they played it like it was. Ronnie didn't want them to be changing stuff up at live shows.
I was almost at this show. They played 4 nights at Winterland and I saw the Fri. night show. I believe this show was Sunday night. They added that show when the first 3 (thurs, fri, sat) sold out. We also drove to Sacramento to see them at the Memorial Auditorium on the following Tue night. They were my favorites in those days.
Greats like these never age.
Today's music does nothing for the soul.Nothing like the 60's and 70's.
Facts
Are you kidding me ! These guys were absolutely THE GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME !
This band was so good they were almost surreal
Love from India 🇮🇳 Simply the most talented and versatile band ever. Mahn!!, they knew how to rock; rock real good
Ed King said that "Saturday Night Special" was Gary's shining moment....Said he nailed it in that one song....
And Ed wrote the tune.
IDK. You got that Right and Freebird were shining moments for Gary too.
3:01 Ronnie to Gary "git down on it" GOLD
Hate to be that Guy... But it's sit down on it!
Lynyrd Skynyrd,is the band Ever, period,no one band is as tight as they we're?!!
God damn! That was a good live performance.
Ronnie never wrote his lyrics down, all from the heart.
Wow they sound good live.. sometimes I wish I grew up in this generation of music.
I did and there was so much good music along with the newer genre southern rock
Yeah being alive back then was pretty special. We had the best cartoons as kids the best TV sitcoms and movies and the greatest music there ever was or will be again. I get a kick outta hearing someone call someone a "Boomer" like that's a bad thing 😂 I wouldn't trade it for any other time 👍
Absolute stellar performance on that one! What a great show they put on, there, that night!
🌴 SMOKIN with SKYNYRD 2024🌴
2 bodies layin' nakied♥️ What I wouldn't give to have seen Ronnie Van Zant live on concert!
how good is this folks ?!!.....................
Real real good!!!
as good as it gets
Damn! What a Concert!
Southern Ass Kicking Rock and Roll!!!!!!!
You sure got that right
The original Lynryd Skynryd was the best of the best, with Ronnie Van Zant on vocals, and Billy Powell on keyboards -- as in the classics such as J.J.Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" -- from the album One From The Road.
tunefultony johnson yes. ....I agree. . thank you. . ..

@@lucy0537 Me too!
some of the best live shit ever
they could have done without wearing bell bottoms, just saying.
@@rtnulb It was the 70s fairly common as you know, so who cares?
@@rtnulb the pants don"t play the guitars, just fahion bullshit
@Nick Wade NO DOUBT about that !!!
What a loss, ok im british but these guys shaped my life.
Nuthin wrong about being British
Oy mate Dusty. Living over the pond. Skynyrd Southern Pride from Gainsville FL USA. There was a big festival in the UK around 1976. Freebird can be found for the purchase. Boast they blew the Stones off the stage. Which they did. Best comment was don't let the stars and bars hit the ground.
Dusty Binns Hi Dusty. You're a wise person. Just listen to Skynyrd, like you do Dusty, man, their trial's and tribute's in their live's is some good stuff.
ok thanks for your comments, a bit of my history if i may. ok, 1975-6Iish. father in british army serving in germany, im 16-17ish...NO TV!!! The forces radio full of abba, i cud never get into the disco explosion!! So off to NAFFI (PX for our U.S cousins) to by deep purple ans led zep albums. To get to our youth club we had to walk across "B" square, a barrack block courtyard, at the time there was a big excersise going on, i think it was spearhead or lion heart, the baracks were loaned out to the 101 screaming eagles for the opperation. I walked across one evening on my way home and out of one window blasting out was " the ballard of curtis lowe"!!! After chucking what seemed like a bucket full of stones through the window a very drunk and pissed off american leaned out.....i say...WTF is this music.?!..he say...skinhead man!! Next day in the NAFFI i asked the assistant for the latest "skinhead man's" album! Thankfully he bought over "Second helpings" when i got home.......BOOM....im hooked for rest of my life.......sad, sad loss.
Dusty

Dusty Binns ...sound's like You could use some good ole' Rock n Roll, Dusty. Thank You for Your courage and for protecting us all. GOD Bless You, Dusty. Peace On Earth. Love On Earth.

thank you
lynyrd skynyrd thoes boys are true Southern Rockin "Free Birds"
Best Band Ever!!! Who else has 3 savages on lead and come in heavy, solid and steady like Train!!!!!!💯💯💯 FLORIDA PROUD
Damn right 💚
This song was written about the cheap $2 handguns considered a threat in the 1970's. Congress even considered a national ban (mandated minimum gun price?). There was even a humorous (unintended) episode of "Hawaii Five-O" where McGarret says, "Dano, we've got to get that gun!". Now it is expensive "black guns" like the AR-15 that are considered a threat. If alive today, Ronnie might have to change the lyrics to
"It's a nasty a-assault weapon. Got a barrel that's a long and black."
This song was in the opening of the movie "The Longest Yard", with Burt Reynolds (another FL east coast Southern boy).
Love the Allman Bros but Skynyrd was the best!
Charles Stone I loved both, like you, and for different reasons. Skynyrd had a harder edge, Allmans had that awesome 2-drummer rhythm and of course Duane Allman was unreal.
Dont forget about Dickey who was also amazing. He could write, sing and play which i feel is the whole package.... Both amazing bands and theres nothing better then southern rock. The Outlaws would be my 3rd favorite southern band....
The Allman Brother Band could improvise on the spot like a Jazz band, Lynyrd Skynard could not!
I’ve always said
The Allmans were better musicians
BUT
Skynyrd we’re better songwriters
Either way, both tremendous and legendary bands!
Saw them in June of 74, in Mobile AL, 2 weeks before Sweet Home Alabama was officially released. Amazing.
Good ol Mobile
Southern rock n roll at its core
R.i.p. ronnie van zant
Hell of a drummer.
This is so good deep purple shivers in the garage - Richie Blackmore calls his doctor cuz he has the southern blues and of course a firebird is in the game 🤗💪🏼
1976.. was a blessed and Awesome Year.......
real men and real rock n roll!
I love these guys! Long live Skynard.
Them and Ted Nugent were the 2 loudest bands that I have ever heard play, and Ive seen hundreds of shows since the mid 70s.
Kickass southern ROCK LOVE IT
RONNIE VAN ZANT GODFATHER OF SOUTHERN ROCK ✴️✴️✴️✴️✴️✴️✴️✴️
🍻100%YES 100%🍻
🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Don't see Ed King here. This must have been after he left the band, and before Steve Gaines joined. Still sounds great.
Exactly right. Ed left the band in May of 75 and Steve joined in May of 76
Gary Allen Steve Ed they all had their moments and played off each other like one fucking amazing big guitar
Walk into a bar and this song on the jukebox .
That's shockingly good. An unstoppable unit.
Can't get anymore Special that this here Saturday Night....Amen Brothers!!
Saw them in knoxville 1976...it was incredible...they played 17 songs.
Ronnie was the man ....
Awesome video footage, thanks for sharing your video with us. They sure don’t make em like they used to!!!!!!
R.I.P. Gary Rossington.
Just listen to that FKN guitar if that don’t give you the chills nothing will. Bad ass rock and roll music . I’m 59 will always listen to my favorite band them and Zeppelin
IMO, these guys are one of the top 5 bands ever, not 1st, nor 5th, but somewhere in between. But maybe #1 in live performance?
Did you ever see them live??
San Francisco, California! Sure did, became a fan that day!
Detroit, Mi 1976
Jeff Ayers my sister saw them Dothan, Alabama May 15, 1977.
Many a nights we’d hang out at the lake next to the bon fire drinking beer listening to this.....ah the good ole days.
🍺 ALABAMA LOVES SKYNYRD🍺
This was the SEVENTIES, nobody did the SEVENTIES like the pre77 skynyrd band 💜
Didn’t dance round didn’t even bother with effects an just stood there an showed up & this is what a man should do. R. V. Z respect ✊
Thats what I call real music
I know many say Steve Gaines was a brilliant addition to Skynryd but this pre 3 guitar sound is pretty good too!
Eddy Bamyasi yea I think they would have done just fine without Steve gains
Eddy Bamyasi its what he brought to the band though. Ronnie saw his talent and ran with it.
Steve was technically a better player, great writer and singer. As per live, I've always found that Allen was one of the most compelling guitar performers of all time.
Steve Gaines was great, but he took the place of Ed King, so they had the 3 guitars before Steve Gaines joined the band.
Ed King was every bit Gaines =
THAT is rock. 'n roll... As good as it gets.
my favorite song
Ummm wow 🤩 gimme back my childhood listening
I think Ed King was my favorite guitar player
Punctuate chords nicely with the bright lead... GnR.
Yes sir!
Sad seeing them play Ed King's songs without him 😔 although his leaving def prolonged his life quite a few years. Had he stayed he may not have lived past October 20 1977
Fucking heavy tune
That’s rock n roll
mr R... i hear you mate, i dont think nothing can replace them, its difficut fella, ..do you embrase the old and welcome the new? i can listen to original suff all day but when i heard last rebal i thought....hmm.
Badass
I'm a black man that doesn't care for the confederate flag or what it stands for, and regardless of whatever beliefs this band has or had. I cannot and will not deny the musicianship of this group. They are tighter than tight. Real musicians and I respect that. That type of creativity will surely be missed.
If there was a confederate flag today it would stand at the Democratic National Convention with the rest of those present day Nazism tactics but 100% right on this band was timeless!!!!
@@mustangguy1663 don't you mean the republican party?
@@yvonnewalrond5014 Democratic party closes churches, controls media with propoganda, it's leaders are into population control, testing and ulilizing aborted babies, and let's not forget what he kkk which party they marched at and supported aka Joe Biden all while manipulating any person of color with talk is cheap with poor results that keep underprivileged enslaved by the system aka big govt. So yeah if you take the emotion out of the people's opinions and look at facts it's 100% the Democratic party that enslaves america today
@@yvonnewalrond5014 Malcolm X said it best back in the 60s, nothing is more dangerous than the white liberal and ironically this was prior to MLK death and prior to LJB recorded comments on getting black America to vote for the Democratic party what a joke that party is and nothing has changed people need to wake up they follow orders like Nazi soldiers all while Biden platform forwards Antifa to his campaign website including BLM funding to do absolutely nothing other than to solidify future political control over their voting base. Its sad how people are brainwashed with media propoganda
I am a 63 yr old black man who heard all the big records they had on the shop floor,I always loved this record and did not know that smell was them also. But the flag ugh that turned me off from getting into them back in the day
Ms Jackie I'm sure you will see him again ,there are no chance meeting in this thing we call life, every thing is pre ordained by a higher power god bless R V Z
Cradle to the grave
GR undervalued greatly. RVS always be the shit but reason RVS a singer not a poet thanks Mr Rossington
It would be hard to say which one those idiots was the best they were all so good.
3:00-3:33 let's hear Mr ED or any one else do that!!! GR is vindicated as band leader
Eric Hall ed king wrote the song. he did that and more.
It's weird how Ed King is treated like some minor piece of the band by fans and the band itself. Maybe it's because he was an outsider from California, but he wrote their biggest song and the 2nd and 3rd albums were carried by his songs.
Ed King was the BEST guitarist LS ever had!
damn
A treatise for gun control! Great song one of my favourites
Good song to drive to. Or play Mario Kart to.
1 of the misunderstood songs in southern
Yell out call blue and

Totally missed the point... now go home and get your fukkin shinebox
This is an anti-Gun song in case you didn't know.
Ronnie owned a revolver and even used it to threaten people in the band when they were recording in the hot-house. Read a bit about the band. You might find it interesting.
