• Stop Pulling Babies in...
Oh nooo, I was doing the pull to sit with my 6 month old!! THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!!
You're so welcome!
I dislocated my brothers arm doing this years ago. He’s 26 and still has problems with his arm today. I’ll never get over it!! Thanks for these suggestions!
😢 awh I’m sorry you still feel guilty it must be hard
Maybe the key is to make them responsible for holding on. I let my son grab onto my 1 hand. With the other I have it ready to catch him if he lets go. He is responsible for doing all the work, requiring his muscles to be activated and lessening the risk of dislocating anything. That’s my amateur opinion. Only since 4-6 months though.
L
Sorry to ask.. What did you do that resulted to this? (So that others may be prevented if they are doing it) thanks
I also did that to my baby sister and dislocated her shoulder. 😢 I regret doing that to this day she was in so much pain crying nonstop and no one knew why until we took her to the hospital.
I worked with babies and have a degree in early childhood education. I wish I had know this years ago. I have been lifting babies, including my own straight up without holding the head once they have neck control. I never once heard about rolling them to their side before lifting them. Sometimes I think everything I learned in my degree was just useless fluff. The tips in her videos should be taught to everyone who works with babies. Thanks for sharing.
Sane here.
Same here! The lady who taught my infant education class literally had us bring in dolls/stuffed animals and talk to them. 🙄
You have a degree and trust just anybody’s methods? Lol
I use one hand to cup her booty the other to cup her head then hold her up to me. She's prob only 7-8 lbs right now, so, it's easy to do it that way. I think she gets neck and head control exercises in when I'm laying down and letting her lay tummy down on me when I burp her. I do kind of let her sit up but in my arms. That way I can control her head movement. I put her on her side when everyone comes back from work, & I let her watch TV or to follow everyone's voices. My tiny newborn, she shows interest in her environment too! I think she wants to play big girl, lol. In due time , young 1. There's such a mean tone in her grunts somexs. Have no clue where she must get it from :/. If she has both our tempers, oh lawd
@@ainsam15 I trust my own judgment but I also keep an open mind when new information is introduced. Some things like this information makes sense so I will implement it in the future. Some other things do not make common sense or just go against my better judgment so I do not do it. Degrees don’t teach everything you need to know for caring for children. Experience is the best teacher.
I was doing this pull up exercise as directed by an Occupational Therapist to help build arm and core strength because my baby did not like tummy time...sad to find out it's not true. I'll stop this immediately! Thank you!
It’s crazy that this method was recommended to us at a special infant care clinic for our 29-weeker. I had watched this video prior to our visit; and voiced concerns about stressing our baby’s joints. The specialist said that we could put our hands behind behind baby’s shoulders as an alternative method; but I will opt for those outlined in this video. Thank you!
Ohhhh I'm glad I saw this. I've been pulling my 2.5 month old son up to sit since seeing it on a paediatrician's video (he was checking head lag). I assumed it was a good exercise to help him develop strength and stability as well. Plus, I like putting him in a sitting position while holding his hands because he burps really really fast.
Glad it was helpful!
Oh, really you saw it from a pediatrician video? I'm shocked because in my country every pediatrician says that you should NEVER put your baby on sitting position, until the baby has accomplished to do it by himself at like 7 month. Otherwise he'll have back problems as an adult.
@@layladontknow5944 same in my country
@@layladontknow5944 actually one of the best ways to burp a baby is in the upright position, also it’s the way it’s recommended to bottle feed as well especially for breastfed babies. Upright with the bottle horizontal

This made me feel so much better! Glad to know there is more than just tummy time (I do know it is still important but it can be hard on fussy days), Thank you 🙂
Your welcome!
Wow my lil brother is 6 months and I ALWAYS do this- tysm for helping
Thanks alot.Am a new mum and am really learning alot.
Thank you so much... I am a first time mommy and my baby is 17 days old today so I needed this...
Pls don't do these activities with baby till he is 4 or 5 months old.....I'm a mommy of 2 now
Love your videos! My baby has a large head, but thinner long body (>95% height) and she hated tummy time, even the different options so we really focused on #4 stabilizing her head while holding and we saw huge improvement in even just 1 week! ❤
That is awesome!
I started doing this since my baby was 4 months old.she dislikes tummy time she prefers to lay on the back most of the time. Recent days Ive increased watching your videos and try to follow your advice. Thank you 😇
I hope the videos are helping!
My 8 month old still hasn't achieved full head control and I have been doing this pull up since yesterday apart from the exercise her therapist suggested. I saw the therapist do it and misunderstood that it was part of the exercise. Glad to have come across this video.
If I may ask does baby have good head control now,?
I kept seeing recommendations for pulling to sit up but I did it once and it freaked me out how strained his arms were. Thank you for these alternatives!
The music is way to high i cant focus on what you’re saying hope you will fix it 😊 but thank you so much for your amazing videos its really helping 🙏🙏
Thank you so much for this!!! Our baby just turned 3 months. Can’t wait to get started on this tips.
You are so welcome!
Oh god I have been doing it to my 4 month old.. Thanks for educating parents like me who thinks it's good and the baby likes it
No worries
Recently discovered your channel. Still pregnant with my first and totally gorging on your content. Brilliant stuff, thank you so much for sharing!
Awesome! Thank you!
Omg thank you for this video!! I saw a therapist do it so I did it to my baby
You're so welcome!
That’s awesome! I literally naturally started rolling my baby to the side when I pick her up before I knew about this video!
Sounds like you are doing a great job!

Being doing this to my 4 months daughter.... thanks for this
My paediatrician told me to do this with my son who had no upper arm strength. However the way she taught me to do it, is don’t just lift him yourself because that can damage the joints, go off of him, if he pulls upward slowly and gently start pulling toward you while still being able to support him. She specifically told me to follow his cues, and to not just pull him. I did this for about a month and now he has strong upper body strength! But this is good to know
Thanks for sharing!
My baby loves holding my hands n sitting up n even stand, he gets so excited with that game.
Oh that's awesome, I've naturally rolled and lifted. Cool. Nice to have some validation
We've been followed by an OT for plagiocephaly and she helped us with general milestone builders. Pull to sit was one of the exercises she recommended. We started from the shoulders, worked our way to the elbows, and eventually the hands when he had strong enough anterior neck strength.
I think it's how it's executed?
Hi Emma! Thanks for sharing! My pediatrician asked me to do pulling babies up to sitting. So why exactly it is bad for the baby, please?
My baby has really good head control at 6 weeks. I can hold him upright without worrying much at all. I did a version of tummy time on a blanket or pillow across my knees and he could hold his head up really well because of the slight incline easing the difficulty. I have been holding him in sitting positions for weeks… I support his torso and spine in a straight line while he looks around and works on his neck control, or sit him back against my chest. He loves it. He hates being on his back too much after waking. He fusses or all out cries. I do flat, firm surface tummy time in short stints because he hates it. He has way better neck and head control than back and shoulder strength …so I am working on upping flat tummy time.
I didn’t know letting my newborn sit up was damaging him. I feel bad now, because he enjoys it.
You are describing my son there as well 🤣 He is 6 weeks old and he loves to get carried around in an up-position. He loves to sit and cries if i put him on his back. I also have him on my knees and he is such a strong little bean. He also rolls around since week 2. He is pretty heavy though. The pediatritian checked him and was amazed by his strength I didnt even knew 😅
She's talking specifically on pull-to-sit. Sitting itself isn't bad when well supported for short periods. However, taking a childs hand or arm, and pulling them into a sit is dangerous. It can cause soft tissue damage or dislocation. Much like baby wearing can cause hip dysplasia if done improperly. Hope that helps clarify! :)

Ich kann dir nur Recht geben!!! So true !!! Ich arbeite als Krankenschwester auf der Kinderintensivstation. Viele Kinder die unter dem Kiss Syndrom leiden wurden so bewegt! 😢
I saw this video during my pregnancy and tbh I find rolling them on their side is easier for the adult too. My baby has been able to lift his own head since about 4 days old so its thrown me out a bit watching for milestones but we're still doing lots of tummy time and practicing tracking objects
Love these! My girl loves tummy time and I was looking for things to help her be able to sit up. She is so interested in food and I don't want to start her until she can hold her self up in a highchair. Thank you!!!
You're very welcome!
Exactly the same what my son's doctor has said.
It’s great you doctor took time to talk to you about this.
@@EmmaHubbard Yes. And I'm glad I found your vlog especially about baby pulling to sit because I found this quite concerning to me as many moms I know do this.
Thank you for vlogging about this. 🙂
Glad it is helpful. Hopefully you find the other videos helpful too.
The video was very important, thank you very much
Skip to 1:57 for actual tips.
If my baby already has that head control, is it ok to let him grasp my fingers and let him pull up on his own? My little guy is currently 8 months.
Ps I just want to say Thank you for sharing all of the info you do…I Love watching your content as a new momma 🤍✨
my son could lift his head by himself since he was 12 hours old 🙃 I never pulled him up myself but did offer my hands (seemed better than the tshirt he tried to grab) as he tried to pull himself up, but only let him when his head en neck were in a good place. otherwise I didn't let him do it.
I let him grow like this on his own strenght for everything.
now he just turned 8 months old and he's learning himself to walk, at the moment still with 1 hand holding onto something but he keeps trying to let go 🙈
he is really fast and strong, always has been
What foods did u have during your pregnancy mam
@@jaishreemurali2299 if you don’t have any health issues like gestational diabetes you are okay to eat anything you’d like while pregnant
My daughter could hold her neck from the first day itself too. She was a full term baby, maybe that helps.
same with my son and he was a 37 weeker. now he’s a month old it amazes me how strong he is lol
Same! My girl is only 9 weeks old and from very early on she’s loved pulling herself into a sitting position, and then pushes up with her legs to a standing position! She’s had good neck control from the beginning.
Am Soooo Glad I found this ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏾
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Emma, I really like the bassinet that I see in this video. Which one is this one? I am currently looking for one. Could you please recommend? Thank you for the informative videos!
Omg. I was actually doing this.😭. Thank god I saw this video.
Hopefully you find the other four activities helpful. Baby's really enjoy our funny faces, smiles and kisses that parents typically do when doing a pull to sit - you can do these funny faces and kisses when they are lying on their back or in tummy time and they will love it just as much!
OMG i am too😭😭
Same here...thanks for sharing
Thank you so much! I really needed this
You're so welcome!
Thank you I'm a new mom and this is nice to know I like your videos
I did it only per therapist recommendations. My daughter had a bit of left torticolis and her muscles on her right side was kind of stiff so we did during therapy session and when I’m working alone with my daughter on her muscles it never as a play time exercise. She doesn’t have that stiffness anymore so I probably won’t be doing it anymore if therapist says so.
Thanks for ur advice, yooh much appreciated I ĥve been doing this I feel very bad n guilty 😢 I stopped as we speak
Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome!
They did this to my daughter the full 9 days multiple times a day in the hospital 😂 and ive done it home to evaluate if she needs to go into a quite space
I did the sideways lift to engage my child's neck and my doctor was impressed by her head strength as early as she did.
Done 3 times I did he is 4 months thank you
Thanks for the tips 😊
First time mom thank you for this informative video!
You are so welcome!
Important tips, Emma. Really appreciate it!
Glad it was helpful!
This is great! Our doc recommended pulling her up by her hands 10-20 times a day :/ def didn't help much
Thankyou doctor
Thank you 🙏🏽 I love this video I’ll also watch your other videos to help me a lil .. I’m a new mom so this helps 🥰
I'm doing it but only as an assistant, the baby does all the work, we started since month 1 working on the grap, then the arm pull (all the force comes from the baby, he pulls himself up, I don't apply any force) and now at 6 months old he is able to pull all the way up BY HIMSELF, he likes it and he asks for it when it's playtime
Love your channel, had my first child 5⃣ weeks ago and I'm still learning. I figured this wasn't something to be done repeatedly.
Thank you for posting such helpful videos. Breastfeeding tips how long should baby be on breast until weening to formula?
6months
thank you for this info. can we start doing from 1month baby ?
Thanks sis i really appreciate it so much dear
So, we don’t do it to exercise our baby (he’s a little over 5 months now), but because he seems to like it. He particularly wants to stand, so we let him pull himself up, and then get his feet underneath him to stand. We help him, but we don’t really pull him. Again, we don’t see this as exercise, but something he just seems to enjoy doing. We do loads of tummy time, and he’s starting to enjoy that as well. We also place him in a sitting position to play with toys or look at a book (which is really just another toy to him at this point). So as long as we’re giving him “proper” exercise, is it detrimental to be doing the pull-to-sit activity? Should we stop doing this?
One of my girlfriends just told me that the baby's head shape can get deformed in the early months and there are ways to prevent that and keep the head in a somewhat rounded shape. Can you please post a video regarding which activities can help with that?
Thanks for sharing this video it’s very helpful to me ..
Good tips! Thank you for sharing. Curious as to your rationale for not doing that pull to sit.
She said that if it's done quickly, it can give your baby a neck injury.
When pediatricians do it, it is slowly, and the moment the head molls back, they stop the movement.
So there isn't any lollygagging of the baby's head, or any whiplash incurred.
So glad i basically been doing everything but also been doing the pull to sit she is almost 5 months old but wil not do it again
luckily i saw this video .i've been trying to pull our baby to sit thanks for this
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, this means a lot to me. thans so much
My baby’s PT told me to do this to help her abdominal muscles.
What if when holding their hands they pull themselves to sitting without us pulling them up? My son is 5 months and pulls himself up to sitting. I will start with the rolling to side for sitting
My daughter is 5 months now and has great head control and very strong. I do a version of this, I don't pull her arms, I hold her hands/forearms and I let her pull herself up. Is doing it like that okay?
Emma, I love your videos. You’re fantastic. I always recommend your videos to new mamas.
Thank you so much!
I started pulling my baby just today, i did it 3-4 times and suddenly this video appeared in suggestions, thank you ♥️
You’re welcome 😊
Ooooops was doing the pull to sit ! Will stop it immediately !
Hi @Emma hubbard my baby is 4 months old when i give her fingers she try to pull it and try sit up right and sometimes i am making her sit
Is that ok? Is it have any risk in future?
The only time I ever saw pull to Sit used was literally when I took my daughter to physical therapy and the doctor did it and it scared me but she did hold her head up. They never said not to try it at home but I’m glad I used my gut and didn’t
Thanks for your videos!
There’s nothing wrong with it though. Telling parents not to do it makes it sound like it harms your baby. My baby loves to take my hands and pull up. It makes him smile.
Right. It's too much do this or that. Not these. Lawd help us 5.5months in
Actually it does harm your baby. It can cause rounded back in future when baby is sitting as well as ligament damage in her shoulders. If your baby grabs a knife and smiles it doesn't mean it's good for her...
During a pull-to-sit the normal response is the baby will right their head and maintain it in line with their shoulders. Baby's initially have very limited neck control and their head is very heavy in comparison to the rest of their body. Until they have sufficient neck control their head falls backwards. When you pull your baby into sitting there is a risk your baby will sustain a neck injury. When doing a pull to sit in an assessment we do the movement very slowly and actually stop the movement as soon as the baby's head falls behind their shoulders to ensure they do not sustain a neck injury. The movement is done slowly to ensure the baby has time to react and turn on their neck muscles. I agree babies do appear to like it when this is done, but from my experience it is the funny faces, kisses and reactions from the adult doing the movement that they are enjoying and not the movement itself.
@@ekaterinakonstantinova814 yeah, you wouldn’t want to whiplash your baby. In the case of mine, he’s 6 months old, and I don’t pull him. He grabs my hands and pulls himself up.
@@EmmaHubbard can you please clarify, are you saying this is NEVER a good thing to do, or at what point is it ok? My kiddo is 2 with Cerebral Palsy. He is not sitting unassisted but has great head control. He loves to do this and I'm curious what your opinion is. (Like is this ok when they have good head control.) Edit: I know the video specifically says newborn, I'm just trying to find exercises to help him work on sitting.
My osteo told me to do this just yesterday after assessing my son!
Your videos are amazing
My 1 month old baby he can stand when I’m holding him other can stand straight his legs. Your video is very helpful.
Glad it helped!
Please don't make he to stand much cos he's still a baby
What if you put your fingers in your baby’s hands and she uses her arms/abs to pull herself to sitting? My girl seems to love doing that, she also pushes herself to a standing position after she’s sat up!
My baby too. She loves to pull herself up when I hold her hands. She stands up immediately after too.
She's 4.5 months.
It’s fine. All babies are different and there’s a big difference between pulling a babies arms and baby using it’s muscles.
@@Black_Samurai-fish Thank YOUUU
@@Black_Samurai-fish thank you, my little boy, 3 months now and crazy head control, pulls himself up into a sitting position. Grins madly when he achieves to bite our finger when he's finally sitting :)

Hi Emma, if possible please suggest the times in weeks or months to make changes in an activity.
How long 2 months old baby should stay on their back? Can I put down on floor for her to play when she wake up or should I be holding her ??
Thank you
no worries
Thanks.
I just love these videos
Simply say.. Thank you. ❤
Awww. I just did it because they thought it was fun
Haha haha
See this is scary bc there’s always someone contradicting something everyone says 🤦🏾♀️
I never did this as an exercise with my kids I just followed them trying to pull up whenever they grabbed my hands and because it made them giggle like crazy
There's a channel called "pathways." They show the development of 2 month old babies called typical and atypical, being pulled into the sitting position. The babies didn't seem to like it.
My baby is 4 months and has diastasis recti the dr said it’ll go away on its own but should I be doing any exercises or will it effect her doing certain things?
Hi @M Vi I recommend you follow the advice given by her doctor. If you are concerned you could take her to a paediatric physiotherapist for advice. Hope that helps!
Curious why pull to sit, which you mentioned is used to assess head control shouldn't be used as an exercise. If its being used to assess it, doesn't it mean its engaging the same muscles required for head control?
Would this also be true to avoid if my baby has super stiff hips? Our OT helping with tongue tie issues recommended doing this every time we pick him up to help loosen up his legs/hips so he doesn’t keep straightening them so tightly.
I have a question though, my daughter is almost 5 months and she pulls herself up using our fingers or the baby gym, but we never actually pull on her, its her own strength always, is it safe if done like this?
Our maternal health nurse said to do this as much as possible
Cheers Emma
Glad you found it helpful :)
😡 most recent nurse review, she said my 12 week old needed to practice this lift which no one had told us to do before and I felt like it’s not good for her arm joints.
Hi emma. My baby is 2.5mos old. Should i be worried that he still cant carry his head? He was in and out of the hosp recently so we couldnt do tummy time for him.
I have a baby exercise app, and they actually recommend doing it........ cant believe it
Can’t you just have do planks with them to strengthen their core?
The wonders weeks recommend doing an easy variation of this at a 90° angle on your legs at 6 weeks. I tried it, and went "No way!"
Just think if someone did this to you as and adult. What muscles engaged to maintain proper form
that mean we shouldnt take tummy time? give ans mam...lay down state is best than tommy time or not?
