Another comedian from the 1870’s tried something similar, but the audiences just couldn’t connect with a guy pretending to converse with someone else on a telegraph.
Bob was the GOAT of dry humor. He could tell a joke, then start telling another before the audience caught on to the punchline. And like George Carlin and a few others, he could make us laugh without saying a word. RIP, Mr. Newhart.
Newhart's phone sketches are the best - you have to use your imagination to fill in for the person he's talking to. Rather than just listening, you become engaged.
Bob on his cellphone: "Hello? Yes... uh... is this heaven? Yeah, yeah... my name's Newhart... now look, you don't know me but... I'm standing outside the Pearly Gates... yes... _Newhart_ . I'm standing out here and there's this guy calling himself 'Peter'. Peter who? I don't know his last name. He calls himself Saint Peter..."
I used to sit by the TV and record episodes of SNL with my tape recorder. Bob ended up teaching me how to fake a phone call that night, and I'm still damn good at it - gets me out of MANY awkward situations. Rest in Peace Legend.
@@yvonnecooper5004 I also recorded the Paul Reiser and David Hyde Pierce episodes, but the Bob Newhart and George Foreman tapes were the only ones to survive all these years. Apparently, Bobby Monyihan also used to sit by the TV with a taperecorder....good times.
I've loved Bob Newhart and his briliant comedy since I raided my older sister's record colleciton an discovered his "Unbottoned" album in something like '63! I was about twelve. And my dear sister was never angry with me, just happy I'd found him!
RIP, Bob Newhart! There was no one else like you- a complete original and beloved by millions. Thank you, sir 🙏🏻💜

Amen!

This one really hurts. Another legend gone. Thank you for all decades of laughs, Bob Newhart ❤
I could watch Bob Newhart do Half a phone call all day every day
Rest in peace to a TV sitcom icon, Bob Newhart
America's Dad! One of the best to ever grace the screens in our homes. Thank you the lifetime of memories. Rest In Peace.
"America's Dad"?
He was very adamant that his characters never be a dad. He did not want to be the butt of a child’s smart aleck comments.
Thank you for the laughs RIP❤
what made him great was his reliance on the intelligence of his audience.
Yes. Bob took us into his joke.
So if I went to work these days huh
That audience was not the sharpest then. Dullards in fact
Rest in peace bob newhart

RIP Bob. You will always be a national treasure for us.
If we can borrow Bob for little while... US TOO!
Thank you to my grandad for introducing me to the comedy of Bob Newhart, he’s brilliant.
Bob Newhart is a legend!😂
His standup from the 50's / 60's is still brilliant today !
I think his first comedy album was in the 60s
His first album is also his first public performance.
Before that, he was "the really funny guy at work."
My favorite part of this is, he's killing on SNL with decades -old material.
My friend and I performed (lip synched) the driving instructor in 4th grade, in 1964. LOVE BOB!!!!

Engaged, using your imagination. Like listening to lots of radio in 1940s and 1950s. Good for one's brain.
RIP Bob. You made me laugh for most of my life.
Bob Newhardt always delivered holding up a mirror to modern America. His material was always entertaining.
Bob Newhart... Just brilliant..
Bob Newhart, like Betty White & Carol Burnett, is a national treasure.
Only Carol remains
I love Bob Newhart.
A comedy treasure, My favorite Comedian.
I really needed some comedy right now. Thanks Bob.
Everyone on Earth: "Rest in peace, Bob. We'll miss you."
Everyone in Heaven: "Hi, Bob!"
Excellent!
Bob on his cellphone:
"Hello? Yes... uh... is this heaven? Yeah, yeah... my name's Newhart... now look, you don't know me but... I'm standing outside the Pearly Gates... yes... _Newhart_ . Rest in peace Bob. You were one of my all-time favorite comics. ❤
(You & Rodney Dangerfield)
He was my number one, followed pretty closely by Carol Burnett and Tim Conway ❤
LOL! I heard this for the first time when I was a kid playing my parent's record collection. This must have been about fifty five years ago!
I heard that one of his stand up comedy albums is one of the best-selling of all time.
my parents had the best of bob newhart album (1966) and that routine was on there
RIP Bob you were the best and so funny. I loved your deadpan humor
Definitely on the Mount Rushmore of comics.

He’s 56 here, hard to believe he’s still with us after all these years.
Well now he’s died
You jinxed it
A master of his craft.
I can’t stop watching this. If only a therapist had told me to stop it twenty years ago. It is beyond genius.
Have you seen Bob’s therapist sketch? He gives great advice on how to “stop it!”
Didn't know Professor Proton hosted SNL.
Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart and Carol Burnett babysat me every weekend
Legend.

Thanks Norm Oldheart.
One of the classic comedians of all time. He is still alive, but very old and feeble now-- I believe he's in his nineties.
God bless him.
Kept me laughing since the 60s. God bless🙏
Thank you for making us all laugh forever Bob. RIP you are with Ginnie now. God Bless you.

Every stand-up comic should watch Newhart at work...Nobody did low-key humor better than Bob.
Never knew Bob hosted SNL at all, let alone twice!
Bob Newhart saying he didn’t get to NY enough? I’m sure he’d give it a big swerve now!!!! 😂😂
Who else here to honour the legend.?
Bob 😃🙌🙌🙌🙏
Rest in peace, Mr. Newhart. 😢
Bob Newhart - Thank you for all the phone calls.
