- I did a video very similar to this almost exactly a year ago, but since, a new version of Megalovania has come out: a "live version" as part of an Undertale concert to celebrate its fifth anniversary. I really never thought a piece of music could have its own narrative arc but here we are - what started as a simple song for an Earthbound hack is now being played in a live orchestra, being listened to be hundreds of thousands of people.
Changes from the 2019 version:
Fixed the embarrassing typo spelling of "Halloween".
Changed the cringey Sans Fortnite dancing to actual Homestuck footage.
Added the Undertale concert stuff.
Changed the layout to be like my current one.
Probably some other things.

The fact that Magalovania start as a hack and now becoming an orchestra in less than a decade is unbelievable.

He did it in more than a decade but at least he did it.
I like all of them equally. The original is simple and sweet, the Homestuck version is awesome battle music and adds the most to the song, the Cognitive Dissonance version is a pretty cool techno version and also awesome battle music, the Undertale version feels the most polished and combines everything before it, the Smash version trims the buildup and goes straight for the intense energy fitting of the game, and the concert version sounds so much more menacing and punchy.
not to mention the smash version adds in the leitmotifs

Toby must feel like a god rn. First it was just a rom hack, then a webcomic I know nothing about, then his own indie game, and I guess that Cognitive Dissonance thingy. SMASH BROS, And had an entire orchestra play it, what’s next, megalovania being in a feature length film? Becoming the most popular genre? MEGALOVANIA IS THE CURE TO CANCER?!

About megalovania being it's own genre there are already so many megalovania versions made by the fans it could be considered it's own genre!

He started with an amazing rom hack in my opinion.
I played it and some humor of Undertale can be noticed here.
This means he didn't change much trough the years, he improved and changed some things considering the swear words, maps and other little things.
But the sensation I had while playing the Earthbound Halloween hack and the sensation I had while playing Undertale/Deltarune are kinda the same.
Toby didn't lost his way of thinking/doing games, he remained the same and he just keeps improving his ways.
Now, THIS is what makes him the best.
If we look at Dr. Andonuts backstory in the Halloween hack we can see he already understood basically everything about what's around him, he really understands how things works in our world, and he had only 16, to make such a great story without cringe dialogues and with swear words that fits the characters he has an extremely high IQ.
Toby is the perfect example that you can do what you want when you believe in yourself.

The fifth one is almost entirely made by LiterallyNoOne and Sammusic.
Edit: In case anybody's wondering, orchestrated versions, besides the official concert in the video, fall into the Remixes sub-genre.

Well, while this song is quite famous because of the Sans fight and memes about it, it's actually quite a good song to listen to.

The toriel/asgore and papyrus reference is awesome
what i love is that the song started as being part of a hack Toby Fox made on Earthbound, a Nintendo game, then it was refurbished for various things leading up to an indie game that took the world by storm and became one of the most renown video game songs of the decade, then gets reintroduced back into a Nintendo game through Smash. it's a weird full circle, and some crazy stuff dude

I don't think it's actually a reference to game theory, it's probably just a nod to the fact that undertale is basically a love-letter to earthbound. Look at frisk and chara, they have the same basic 'kid with striped shirt' design that all mother protagonists have.
Sans in the xbox version of undertale says he isnt the type of guy to wear a hat. And ness wears one. Which proves the fact that game theory is wrong
God I hope one day we have a high quality version of the smash megalovania. Those chord changes are FUCKING GODLY and them GUITARS

This video seems to only be ones by Toby or wholly based off of Toby’s. The Halloween hack, Homestuck, Undertale, and SSBU versions are made by Toby, the Cognitive Dissonance one is very clearly meant to be basically just a cover, and the orchestra one is just a cover in an Undertale concert. Peterquest differs heavily from the original, and basically only includes the chord progression of part of the song, so it doesn’t really count. Brodylovania was made as part of a Brodyquest remix thing and entirely as a meme, and the other Homestuck one literally sound like a carbon copy of the normal Homestuck Megalovania

@TheBrodsterBoy Brodylovania and Alterniabound were both actually made by Toby. Brodylovania even has Toby's voice recording in the beginning, and it was made as an entry for a contest based on Brodyquest. Alterniabound was simply the demo version of the normal Homestuck Megalovania, continuing using the guitar sf2 for the latter half of the song unlike the final release.

My literal first thought upon seeing this was "but does it include the cognitive dissonance version?" (And before anyone points it out no I wasn't thinking in terms of what the sixth slot would be)

Yeah honestly of all of the ones written by Toby (the orchestra one was just approved by him, the cover was written by someone else), it is definitely the best. I love the callbacks to the other parts of the genocide route with the inclusion of heartache and bonetrousle.

okay, first of all, this is very spoilery so if you actually wanna read the webcomic you shouldn't read this comment
anyway, the yellow and purple planets are kingdoms of light and dark respectively, called Prospit and Derse (though only derse is shown in the flash actually). everyone has a copy of themselves on one of those planets called a dream self, who you become when you go to sleep. it can also function as a second life.
the black dog thing is Jack Noir, an agent of Derse. he got the ring of the Queen, which, long story, made him extremely powerful. he is on a quest to k1ll and destroy everything just because he's bored.
the ram girl is Aradia, i have her on my pfp :). her dream self is asleep on her Quest Bed, which is basically an altar on which you sacrifice yourself to get superpowers. she does that and becomes a god-tier with time powers.
the orange fairy girl is Vriska, who is already god-tier. the bull boy, Tavros, who is like, her hate-lover? is trying to kll Vriska because she's been harassing her all his life (long story). but Vriska is stronger, she puts his lance through his chest and throws him off a cliff.

Technically speaking, Aradia is on her Sacrificial Slab, not her Quest Bed. The Sacrificial Slab is a special, second way to become a god that you use if your dream or real self is already dead (because the Quest Bed requires that both be alive when you are killed on it).
As for Tavros and Vriska, the reason he went to kill her wasn't because of their past relationship, but because he found out she was responsible for Jack Noir becoming as powerful as he was, and for him coming to chase them down, _and_ she was actively leading him to the meteor with the intention of trying to fight him (which we learn later would have ended very poorly for her if she succeeded).

I think Megalovania is like Don't Stop Believing. Both are really good songs, and when used right, are even better. However, the reason they become banes of people's ears is because of how overplayed they are. It gets especially worse with how many memes there are involving Megalovania. We just need to leave it to the professionals for this stuff.
