The 'Kent Link' services certainly had an exceptionally bad week: over-running engineering work, driver shortage, points failure, a collision, IRA attacks, a fatality and a track defect. Still, at least under BR there was none of the money-grabbing, buck passing mentality that we have today. It's just a shame that successive Governments starved it of investment that could have given us newer trains and new infrastructure that we're now seeing. All without paying obscene sums of money to shareholders, extortionate fares and the complexity of the current system.
When trackwork is needed to be done, they should do it like they do here. Trackwork is done from Midnight on Saturday Morning until Midnight Monday Morning and buses replace the trains. The buses are contracted and there is no extra charge for the pax. Just use their tickets.
Always wondered what Europeans must've thought when they boarded a train at the old Dover Western Docks. They must have thought they were entering a Third World country. Still, I wouldn't have had it any other way, tbh. Such drama ! Talk about gritty realism.
Have we certified the body dead yet? Yeah, it's got no head. Brilliant! Sorry, but as an emergency services worker that made me chuckle, no offence intended to the deceased. That John Arthur is as cute as a wee button too!
Problem is the Managers want and expect far too much work from less staff, they do not listen to the thoughts of the engineers and make demands.............he who shouts loudest gets what he wants. I would sack all the whiz kids, join the railway with a degree, a degree in bugger all use to the railway industry.
You can blame Tony Blair for "all the whiz kids with a degree in bugger all". All that talk of getting more people through University and ignoring apprenticeships, and now we have a country full of baristas with degrees and no skilled tradesmen.
They should re Nationalise the hole thing. All these private companies are milking the system and they seem unable to couple two different trains together. Let alone run trains on time.
and the government closing railway workshop like Swindon and Doncaster they built trains from scratch they where highly skilled men witch you cannot replace with out years of training For me the Buck stops with the government and its there bad management
Thatcherism in a nutshell: Close down all the pits and factories and shipyards, put everyone on the dole and then wonder why the economy is down the toilet.
poor communications between the public and management and the railway system under funded under maintained lack of staff training lack of train drivers but we got to give the railway a chance for them too up gade you cannot buy a train off the shelf like you can a car ,it take time for them too be built and 50 years of under investment in the railways from past government right from the 1960 our government got things all wrong and there mistakes and bad management For me the buck stops with the Government and the public are paying for it all and being ripped off
Its just as bad under privatisation.......SOUTHERN RAIL !!!!! Terrible service....always late due to lack of train crew.....no different to twenty three years ago....
no that started with Rodger Douglas and David lange ( and preble and co..)then continued one by Ruth Richardson and neither party has fixed it since side note watch ( someone else's country ) (land of plenty) (a civilized society) (hollow men)and revolution the 4 part tv doco) if you havent already they make for some interesting viewing and also (1952) :)
What are you talking about? This was down to a lack of funding, driven by Conservative ideology, to intentionally run the railways into the ground so they could propose privatisation and the free market as the only solution. And what happened after privatisation? Things got even worse.

We built the Flying Scotsman, Mallard and Intercity 125(HST). Now all the new trains get built in Japan, such a shame.
Some things never change!
Was that Jonathan Creek at the end before he was famous?
Richard Helliwell 😂

Railways are a natural monopoly for theoretic 100% efficiency. But it also have to be taken seriously to work properly.
Always wondered what Europeans must've thought when they boarded a train at the old Dover Western Docks. They must have thought they were entering a Third World country. Still, I wouldn't have had it any other way, tbh. Such drama ! Talk about gritty realism.
our railway needs a centralized management system and its own bank so there always funding for the railway system
How did you come across this documentary?

Isn't it odd that BR was privatised in 1994. This was made a year before that by the government mouthpiece that is the BBC..
They should re Nationalise the hole thing. All these private companies are milking the system and they seem unable to couple two different trains together. Let alone run trains on time.
and some 23 years later the system seems not much better.

Clearly your government has more important uses for tax dollars like welfare handouts.
Thatcherism in a nutshell: Close down all the pits and factories and shipyards, put everyone on the dole and then wonder why the economy is down the toilet.
and a look at over head hanging mono rail systems like they have in Germany running today the H-bahn network
poor communications between the public and management and the railway system under funded under maintained lack of staff training lack of train drivers but we got to give the railway a chance for them too up gade you cannot buy a train off the shelf like you can a car ,it take time for them too be built and 50 years of under investment in the railways from past government right from the 1960 our government got things all wrong and there mistakes and bad management For me the buck stops with the Government and the public are paying for it all and being ripped off
24 years later and it's still just as bad
even under a nationalized railway is back too the government again and bad management
DID YOU SEE THAT B.R STAFF AT 14:58 SLAM THE DOOR ON THAT WOMEN? DID THAT TO ME AND WOULD OF PUT A COMPLAINT IN ABOUT HIM
Its just as bad under privatisation.......SOUTHERN RAIL !!!!! Terrible service....always late due to lack of train crew.....no different to twenty three years ago....
I take it the guy with the beard and heavy bulging beer gut @ 4.07 is the regulator!
Old, Dirty and late...? Oh how things have changed post privitisation...😉
time for a change of power ... [in my opinion] the.nats after 8 years have managed to turned NZ into a 3rd WORLD COUNTRY !!!!!
no that started with Rodger Douglas and David lange ( and preble and co..)then continued one by Ruth Richardson
