It's probably not going to happen, but I do hope somehow they do find the "Step in the Right Direction" footage to add it back to the movie; maybe for a big anniversary in Angela Lansbury's honor, who deserves to be seen in one of her most treasured numbers that was lost to time.
I love animation, and the ghost army was always my favorite part of this movie. As I've gotten older, I still love animations but sometimes the behind-the-scenes footage can be just as interesting as the actual animation itself. In any case RIP Dame Lansbury, you will be missed.
Yes it is and you don't see them made like this anymore. Don't get me wrong the movies they have now are nice to but now it can be done on computers and such where as back then many of the things were done with actual people. Dang I must be old lol. This and the labyrinth and the dark crystal were AMAZING!!!!
When the Movie came out, Walt Disney was already dead at that point for about 5 years then. But everything about this movie really screams classic Disney, just like Mary Poppins did. RIP Angela Lansbury.
I remember watching this and hearing A Step In The Right Direction for the very first time. It is too bad that the film strip with the song got lost on the cutting room floor but it is great that the song itself is preserved. As I am watching this right now on UA-cam, my mom is watching Murder, She Wrote (also starring Angela Lansbury) on the TV in the living room.
we recorded this when it aired, the restoration being on TV was kinda a big deal cause it had been a laserdisc exclusive for a few weeks before coming to TV. the DVD only has bits and pieces of this but not the full special.
Just watched this movie again for the first time in 20 years or so. Was curious about how they made it and kind of sad this is the only video on the making of I could find. For being late 70s it really looks good and stands the test of time.
Definitely the spoon full of sugar equivalent to the Bedknobs and Broomsticks film!!! It adds that same message of striving for success. Due to constraints on a theatrical release, it was limited to under 2 hours. Thankfully Portobello road is restored wonderfully!! I cant see the theatrical version its just cuts off everything. I digress. You can hear step in the right direction throughout the film as as as The age of not believing expressed in the score.

I don't understand why it was never upgraded for blu-ray, but I'd imagine that's why it's not on Disney+. Excluding the Portobello Road sequence (which was WAY too long and rightfully cut), the extended version is drastically superior.
6:47 Angela, I believe that I might have a theory that could solve that mystery. The solution lies in the print that was shown in London for the premiere. According to the official DVD, the song wasn’t cut until after that premiere. If that print still exists, then so does the picture element of the song. At least, that’s my theory.
@@m.syauqiabdurahman2798 exactly! Especially with next year marking the film’s 50th anniversary. If that print still exists after 50 years, it might be the only place where the picture portion could still be found.
I actually remember the film part of the song a step in the right direction. It involved Ms. Price flying and interacting with cartoon animals. I remember her singing to the cartoon turtle.
Well Then That Would Have To Make This "March-Sound/Sounding Version Of Johan Strauss Jr's Waltz Swing Back-&/And-Forth 'Tale(s) Of The Vienna Woods'" (Just) Like "The 'Chimpanzoo'" From "Mary Poppins (Part 1)" (Also With "Cartoony-Bits"), Would It Not?, (It's Asked In Both This Flick &/And "Mary Poppins").
I don't care if the movie didn't get nothing but its still a heck of a great movie, love the cast, music and the special effects. This movie is my 2nd favorite behind Mary Poppins and just ahead of Jungle Book.Years later Miss Lansbury would be in another fav of mine(Beauty and the Beast.Mrs.Potts)That song is another fav of mine
At 6:45, did Scott MacQueen ever consider the print that was shown in London at the premiere? If that print from October 7, 1971 still exists, then it’s the only source of the picture element of “A Step in the Right Direction” because it was in the premiere print before it was cut. I’m betting that not only does that print still exist, but Disney didn’t even consider that possibility.
They do have the original audio for that number, but the picture portion has yet to be found. I’m convinced that it was part of the film before it ran at Radio City Music Hall. If any of those prints from the pre-Radio City run still exist, I’m convinced that one of them has the picture portion.
If someone manages to find the picture element of “A Step In The Right Direction,” I assume that Disney will be in touch with that person. To my knowledge, the song was in the film for the London premiere, and all the cuts were made afterwards for Radio City Music Hall. I’m guessing that if the London premiere print survived, then so did the song’s picture element. That print might be the only one that has that song in it.
The London premiere took place on October 7, 1971. If there’s a print of the film with that date on it, that’s probably where the picture element of the song is. According to various sources, including the official DVD release, the song wasn’t cut until after the London premiere, so it seems logical that it would still exist if the premiere print survived.
Kind of weird that around the same time Halloweentown was airing on the Disney Channel I wonder if Angela Lansbury was thought of to play the role of grandma Aggie Cromwell However in the same token Debbie Reynolds did a phenomenal job at the role
I don't know a lot about the Halloweentown movies (I'm a tad too old), but Debbie Reynolds was having a MAJOR career renaissance at the time, so it's not surprising that she got the part. And just as this film remained special to Lansbury, Reynolds discussed how much she cherished the Halloweentown flicks in several interviews.
Only a small portion of 'Step in the right direction' actually made it into the release of the movie. First was in the open credits then again when Price first takes flight.
