My dad was with the 8th Infantry Regiment and landed at Utah. He did share with me that they were all expecting fierce resistance from the Germans as they were landing. However, because they landed south of their target area, they had little resistance. As he put it, "We basically walked up over the beach and inland." He later went on to fight in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest and lost his right eye. His ticket home. Such a brave generation. We owe them all our freedom.

My dad, Sgt. George Russell Van Horn was also with the 8th Infantry Regiment and the Utah Beach landing. Likewise, he was in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest and for shot in the heart, but the shrapnel stopped. It was one of ten different shots of his body throughout the war.

I have an Uncle who was part of the 82nd Airborne now deceased that I admire, he was part of the invasion and we didn't know it until his funeral. He paid a heavy price by having nightmares every night for the rest of his life! This is the greatest generation and I thank you!

I keep coming back to this channel because of the detail. The description of the encounters experienced by each unit is so interesting. That coupled with the maps and corresponding historical film clips is such an effective method of communicating the essence of each battle.

I really appreciate the way you give context to the stories I've read. You do a good job of showing small segments of a battle and explaining them thoroughly. Too often historians try to explain the entire battle and have to leave out a lot. Your channel has become one of my favorites. Thank you again, sir. I hope I get to see some of these locations in person some day.

I served almost 4 years in the 1/8 Infantry during the early 80's and had the opportunity to view copies of some of the daily reports for June 6th and the campaigns following. Very few men made it all the way through to VE Day. We understood what a lineage we had to live up to.
Note: The Soldier of the Battalion Color Guard who carried the Regimental Flag was picked for his strong back due to the sheer mass of the Campaign Ribbons attached.

I served with the 1/12th Infantry as a squad leader back in the 80s and it was always humbling to read about the exploits of those infantry soldiers that came before us. It would send chills down my spine to see all of the campaign ribbons on our battalion flag and think about those fine soldiers. What an honor to serve.

    G'day,
    Yay Team !
Well done mate, it's good to see coverage of Beach Landings at Normandy other than the one at Omaha.
Did YT let you know (?) that I managed to post a daily uploaded chronological abstraction from the Unit History/Daily Operational Record Sheet of 11 & 20 Squadrons RAAF, from 29 April to 11 May, with titles running from,
"29 April 1942 ; RAAF Coral Sea Catalinas..."
    to,
"11 May 1942 ; RAAF Coral Sea Catalinas..."
    ...
The book from which I was working was written by Jack Riddell - the Flight Engineer of A24-12, on the day Captain (Flight Seargant) Bill Miller & co-pilot Flight Seargant Arthur Lunnon returned to Cairns after a "Dogfight" lasting 1 Hr : 37 minutes....(!), between their Catalina and 3 "Rufes" (Zero Fighters on Floats...) a thousand miles from base....(!).
There were 92 bullet-holes in the Catalina & their Tail (Tunnel) Gunner had the end shot off a finger on his left hand, and got a bullet in the left arm as well...
The particular copy I aquired bears an autographed dedication from Jack Riddell to a Mrs Una Dann - who appears to be the daughter of Arthur Lunnon.
The book was published for the 50th anniversary of the Battle, 29 years ago.
Thirteen Videos in 13 days was quite a tough row to hoe..., it turned out...; but my father had a cousin who flew RAAF Catalinas in 1944-45, after first doing a tour of Lancasters in 1943, so once I bought the book I couldn't resist making a 79th Anniversary Series - to keep their story alive, kinda thing...
    Such is life,
    Have a good one...
    Stay safe,
    ;-p
    Ciao !

      Ah,
      Excellent !
I'm so glad that you're not swimming back from Mid-Channel (!).
University, eh - I managed to avoid those places..., when I studied Nursing it was a Hospital-based System ; but when I graduated as a NSW Registered General Nurse (with a Distinction) that was equivalent in California to a Batchelor of Arts and a Pre-Medical Degree, which meant 9 of the required 19 "Credits" to be called a Medical Doctor...
I was in the last Group of Hospital-Trained Nurses to graduate from Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney, in 1983 ; and in 1986 when the first Uni-Trained Nurses emerged, their Oz Qualification was only good for 5 of the 19 Credits to become a Doctor in the USA...
So, I hope you're studying something which the University knows how to teach (!) {Modern or Military History might be up your Alley ?}.
Anyway, as long as you're OK - but I was starting to wonder.
This place is heavily overwatered at the moment, last week I posted 3 Videos on bogging & unbogging a Vehicle from Traprock which suffered Subsoil Liquifaction (!), and yesterday I posted one devoted to the Mudpies on my Driveway...

Over my lifetime I have seen this action in #ww2 along with the erroneous notion that the war was fought for Jews reach almost religious levels. Perhaps in a few more decades things will settle down and the current #MeOverEveryone politics will allow previous history to re-emerge and common discourse will resume. Best wishes.☘️📚
