- You can’t always rely on your customers to do the right thing. And unfortunately this job turned into a fight because of that. But that’s how it is when your in business for yourself!

A tip for drilling steel when there is concrete underneath, leave the steel bit hand tight in the chuck, when it starts to break through the steel it will stop, remove the steel bit and put in the carbide regular tight with a key. You will continue through the little bit of steel left and into the concrete. Learned this trick when installing storefront glazing into steel columns that are poured solid with concrete.
That's a good tip man. Best thing about the comments is I learn something every time I read them.

love learning things on youtube that's an awesome trick for an annoying situation "ideally" you would have the holes prefabricated in the steel installation so you could clamp it in place then hammer drill the concrete for the anchors

One other Tip, never trust anyone that tells you the power / breaker is off...
.I did a few times and one had a 600 lb gate open on me and fall on top of me
when a car pulled up to get in the gated entrance......
plug your grinder or a voltage checker gizmo in the outlet and check for power...
I checked myself with a probe!
Man that brings back memories. I was working for a guy when I was in highschool, that knew just enough to be dangerous.
He had a brother that had just gotten out of jail, and had addiction issues.
My boss would always send me out with his brother because I was the only one level headed enough to deal with him.
TWICE! The guy went to monkeying around with the breakers while I was changing switches/fixtures. I got popped pretty good both times, but nothing to serious. I was very lucky, and the second time I had to whoop a guy old enough to be my dad.

Great video… this gives me a perfect example of how to adapt to the situation and how to cope with someone who is trying to underpay you for a job he didn’t tell you enough about plus the difficulty the job is already… good job and keep doing it 👍
Normally with thin sheet metal applications similar to this, I will overlap the two pieces (new and old metal), secure / clamp everything as close to final positioning as possible, perhaps throw on a tack or 2, and then cut the entire seam in through the overlap which leaves a butt joint with perfectly mirrored sides and a gap no bigger than the thickness of a thin cut off wheel, which even that can most likely be brought to zero with the right amount of carefully applied "tap tap tap-ah-roo's."

Also, using .025 solid wire and gas works better on light gauge,
well it was exactly 8ft and original pieces where butt welded

@@PWgadgets Thanks for the tip, I've been a certified welder for over 30 years. Regulator is for turning up gas when welding lite gauge in wind- it is less penetrating than FCAW.
One little tip is when you do the overlap if you add the difference in the width of the blade after the cut you will have a perfect gapless seam

A couple of lengths of angle iron crossing the joint then clamped might have helped align the panels. Good work young man!
a little trick to blow the dust out at 6:30 ....turn the drill sideways and let the cooling fan blow the dust away....works like a champ
Yep! Back in my commercial drywall days right out of high school we would use the tan the screw gun to give us a quick cooling breeze lol.

When trying to figure out where your electric hole was supposed to be all you had to do was pull the old panel out and use it as a template
This! Also, go ahead and feed the wires through before you weld/bolt the panel in place.

Whenever I use my brake I cut a few 1-4"strips and do test bends. List all measurements and orientation on the test bend. Use another sheet bent over the brake die to make a radius shim for a larger radius.
Had me laughing twisting that outlet around 🤣
Man, when I saw you just drilling a hole in the concrete.. I don't know what It's called in English, but I think the translated is Rotary Hammer. In Sweden It's called Slagborrmaskin. Like this one: Makita DHR202Z It would make that job so much easier. Love the vids mate, keep 'em coming.

We use these in Florida, or Milwaukee, or Bosch Bulldog, SDS PLUS and SDS MAX , most everyone uses these with Bosch bits

I wish it was like that when i was a mobile mechanic during 'rona lmao, i cant even take apart my own car without feeling like someones breathing down my neck or has their eyes burning into the back of my head, it was a blessing to not have a customer like that, so when i did i hardly charged em any labor, usually just the parts and gas if it was something quick.

Use a flat piece of wood with the bessy next time. A 2x4 can really make a butt connection easier to fit. Also you could weld small angle iron or maybe a small flat plate on the inside of the sheet to help hold it.
At 3:15 I didn’t realise you’d gone inside to pull those wires through straight away and thought someone was inside stealing the wires away😂😂😂

It’s weird to me that more people don’t know that. I used one for eleven years, installing cable and satellites. I drilled through a lot of mortar.
I have one left it on the other truck, didn't anticipate using it
why not use a sawzall for cutting the sheet metal in a situation like this no reason to throw a bunch of sparks in a unit full of boxes. also a fiberglass blanket would not be a bad thing to carry. with the carbide blades that are out now half the time its easier for me just to use the sawzall
My experience with a sawzall, even with the carbide blades is that they absolutely mangle the edge profile of the sheet, I'm team cut-off wheel all the way.

Using angle grinder with cutting disc without safety guard right next to your neck its just plain stupid, one catch on the disc and you will bleed out in few minutes, stay safe
On the eletrical box hole use the old panel as a template just cut the sides off the old piece line up the front and mark the hole easy peezy

Love seeing your stuff mate, and the little differences between blokes I've seen in Australia and you in America.
Big one, you using a stick, and welding it pretty, versus a lot of guys here with a MIG and essentially hot glue gunning stuff.
You cut the old shitty bit out, they bash it with a hammer and weld sections in to hide the damage behind it.
I'd hire you in a hot minute over most guys here.

It is just a panel to make it look nice bashing it back in shape so it doesnt block the door and spraypaint it, would be fine.

My insurance stipulates that I stay on site for an hour after any "hot work" is completed. All flammable material has to be removed from the work area. In practice it's very hard to do.

I was too. He didn't even think about it. He's just young. Has a lot to learn and gets in his feelings too much. He's doing good though, especially at his age. Just my opinion
Get some E track with the ratchet straps. You can put 1/4 inch monolocks on the wall, pull it with that, like an anchor point. Just something handy since that's what box trucks use to tie down.
I was a millwright for 10 years in Arkansas this is stuff we deal with on a daily basis you just have to suck it up and try to deal with it.
You can push on stuff like with the end of your crane (gently of course) in the future

I started portable welding in 1987. Did it till 2010. The junk from "customers" was filling me. So, I stopped. Still make usefull items, structures for myself. The public ? For-gedabout it !

I think I would have piled those boxes around the corner, to hide them, and went and got some cardboard boxes, 1/4 burned them, stomped out the fire, and piled it back in the corner by the welding. Leaving a nice note about how sorry I was, hope it didn’t cost him too much inventory

I am genuinely curious, I working on my estimate/ final cost breakdown and I wanna dial in as tight as possible so I can quit moonlighting and go full time (I already could go full time and Im not even finished with my first year)
My advice....overestimate. Forget what you have been taught about competing with the market. Be the expensive guy. People want to hire the expert. My most expensive customers gladly pay deposits and rarely bother me....but my cheapest customers bitch and complain, question if I know what I'm doing, then force me to threaten legal actions to get paid. Trust me, dont compete with other businesses. Be the expensive expert.

Nah, you get paid to do a job that they can’t do themselves. You don’t get paid to be nice and let them give you a hard time. A customer like this can’t take their problems to another contractor. Customer service isn’t a skill trade

Dude you also have a crane on your truck that's an anchor point too extend the crane, back it in there, move it into position and ratchet strap to or winch with that. There's always a good anchor point wherever you need it with a crane around!
I feel like that'd be more work then just ratcheting it to the support beam directly across.. but I see your point

U can use the damaged panel u removed as a quick template to mark the hole for the electrical box. I've learned over the years that the solution to the problem is usually within 10ft of ur work area. Good job, looks like it sucked. Oh ya, fuck that guy 😂
I H8 customers who: 1) lie about the job. 2) Who stand around and watch me work. 3) Who try to tell me how to do my job when they don’t know siht about what they’re talking about (because they hired me to do it in the first place). 5) Who want ME to eat some of MY profits becasue they don’t understand the fricking price of metal these days (Thanks “Brandon). 6) Who don’t want to pay me or delay payment after the job is completed. It’s why I get every job in WRITING. I make a little contract with every customer.

I have two pairs of those pants and I HATE them. The knee is in the worst possible spot. It’s to low and every time I kneel it gets caught and I have to pull the pants off my knee so I can bend. The worst designed pants ever.
