The Most PAINFUL Sting in the World?

  • The bullet ant has the most painful sting of all ants, bees, and wasps acording to the legendary Schmidt Sting Pain Index. From the reports I have seen on UA-cam, it is excruciating, debilitating, and incapacitating for up to 24 hours. So how bad is it really? Well during our trip to the Peruvian Amazon, we had to find out! Bullet Ant Challenge accepted!

There is very much an emotional element to pain, especially in humans, so fear or surprise can absolutely be multipliers. Pain is such an interesting phenomenon; take tattoos for example, two people will have completely different opinions on which part of their body is the most painful to tattoo. Pain levels can be affected by how well you've slept, or eaten, and all sorts of other things.
For me, my mental health affected how much pain I felt when being tattooed. As my state of mind improved I was definitely feeling more pain and I was struggling to deal with it as well as I had in the past. I find it really interesting :)

That could simply be because of what the two previous comments mentioned. I doubt you've been stung enough times for there to be a statistical confidence in the data.
Probability is a strange thing for our minds to grasp, one can be the worst poker player in a tournament (or several) and still win, or they could make really shallow stock market "investments" and make a large profit. They will probably think high of themselves after that, but the probability will eventually, given enough time, blow up in their face. Of course in real life that might never happen, just as it might never happen that you get lucky in the first place, as most simply do not live long enough.

    • @catpoke9557

@@YeeLeeHaw I'm not extremely confident in the wasp as I was only stung twice (but they were both in vastly different areas to be fair) but I've been stung a lot by scorpions. I wouldn't use it in a study or anything, mainly due to the lack of control, but as a personal anecdote it's pretty solid.
The odds I was just consistently hit on a vein or nerve, or that they used a high dose of venom, all across different parts of my body and separated between years, AND they failed to ever do any of this to any of my family members... The odds aren't good.
Of course like you said probabilities can be crazy. But given that we already know people's bodies respond differently to venoms (as shown by allergic reactions and local reactions) it's not bad of an assumption that I simply react worse than my family to scorpion stings. For a scientific paper yes it would be bad. But for a simple assumption in daily life, not so much.

Of course she picked it up and played with it, completely disregarding the fact she looked like a walking pile of ants - and walked into the house covered in them - not realising she was mildly allergic (so she was bright pink, and seething with ants). Her mum freaked out and went into labour. 😂
Same family - dad is driving on the A12 and managed to swallow a wasp to which he was allergic - so had to make a 70mph dive for the hard shoulder so the car didn't crash..
My experience was hitting a Hornet at 50mph+ on the screen of the car. You could hear the bang. I backed off to about 15mph and the thing crawled towards the side of the car, gave me a dirty look, and flew off, perfectly fine.

I do have to wonder if the quantity of venom was a factor. Also, one factor in the perception of severity is the long duration of pain, which increases in intensity for several hours and can last 24 hours, meaning a bad sting can take you out of comission for a whole day.
The other insect with a level 4 on the sting index is the tarantula hawk wasp, but it gets all its hurt going and over with compressed into about 3-5 minutes. An entomologist that studied them said that once stung, the smartest thing you could do was immediately lie down so you wouldn't fall while thrashing around from the intensity of the pain. Fortunately for people unlucky enough to be at the wrong end of a tarantula hawk, the pain is searing but rapidly subsides, going down to a "normal sting" level of discomfort in just a minute or two. Also fortunate for all of us in the western Americas where tarantula hawk wasps are endemic, they're not at all aggressive, and prefer to save their potent venom for unse on prey unless significantly harassed. In all the times I have encountered them, they've always been far more intrested in exploring holes that might contain spiders than in the big mammal that's minding it's own business, and they basically ignore anything they can't eat and isn't trying to eat them.

So the first sting you would not have an allergic reaction, but the second or third exposure is when the allergic reaction would happen if your body chooses the allergic reaction route.
My sisters are severely allergic to wasp stings, but I always recover quickly after a wasp sting. One of my jobs while working the farm was to "move wasp nests" to keep my family safe. Course one bullet ant in isolation is a far cry from stumbling into a nest of the things, but you gotta respect it from the stories.

I'd love to see Coyote interviewed on his experience. It's important to note, that while making fun of Coyote is the popular thing to do, you have Schmidt a scientist that devised the scale, describe it as... "pure, intense, brilliant pain...like walking over flaming charcoal with a three-inch nail embedded in your heel." You can imagine coyote's reaction then, and maybe schmidt and coyote are both sensitive to the pain causing components of the sting.
I see a lot of people bringing up Jack's reaction to the sting and having zero trouble with it. But it can be just as manipulated as some of you think Coyote's video is. His black widow video is a perfect example, he downplayed the absolute hell out of the black widow bite, and if he had never made the update, we wouldn't have known it was as severe as it was, the same thing with this video. If they hadn't updated us, we wouldn't have known. Pain that is severe enough to stop you from sleeping is at least a 7-8. But his talk about how he had a migraine being worse, doesn't underscore how tolerable the bullet ant sting is IMO, it shows how bad a migraine is. My sister gets them chronically (several a month) and they put her down for days at a time where she'll start throwing up from the pain.
The Satere-Mane tribe put it on for 5-10 minutes that woven glove, and it's their rite of passage to manhood. It can cause the boys to shake uncontrollably for days.

There has to be a difference in the ant that Schmidt or Coyote and these guys got stung. While i don't really like Coyote, i can't imagine he would exaggerate THAT much. What happened later, okay, but the vast difference in the initial reaction has to be noted. I gave a couple of possible reasons, do none of them make any sense at all?

I just don't think that one or two (or even 5) people on the internet having a better reaction means anything, the differences in pain tolerance is huge for some people. There is also a question of exact genus, and venom delivery, was the people who felt nothing even given a venomous sting? could they have faked it with a similar looking species that isn't the same? Are there localities that have much more effective venom?
did the sting get in to coyote's bloodstream (IV envenomation) which at least in snakes, causes them to be far more lethal.
There are so many controls to address that I don't think anyone has effectively done.
The one guy I bring up Jack's world of wildlife, is one of the people who taunt coyote constantly.... but as we found out in his black widow video, the dude just has a pain tolerance of a god. (as he described an 8-9 pain) with little reaction.

likelihood of being encountered! While I haven't experienced the sting from a velvet ant, I have been stung by everything else in the southeastern U.S. with the exception of a true hornet (black with white ring on abdomen) and what we called Japanese hornets (probably cicadia-killers), at one time or another... but the giant water bug
was definitely the most painful bite that I have received, not counting the bite from a 5 and a half foot Eastern Diamondback when in my mid twenties... which was on an entirely different level! Thanks for an amazing channel. Hope you and your family are doing well. Take care.

I would also imagine they have such a bad reputation in the wild because if they're anything like the fire ants we have in the US, you're probably rarely getting stung by just one. I know the fire ants will coordinate bites once several are on you, not sure if bullet ants do the same thing, but I imagine not realizing you have half a dozen of them on you and then all of a sudden getting several of those stings would be super unpleasant. Getting stung by one fire ant is unpleasant, but nothing crazy. However when I was kid, I unknowingly stood on an ant bed and ended up with about a dozen stings on my foot and ankle. My leg up to my knee felt like it was on fire and super itchy for a good while, just more venom, more effect I would guess.
