They always flip flop when someone has a very bad canvas, it's either your fault or theirs just depends on how the coin lands that day.
If a professional, good tattoo artist tells you "Hey...this ain't gonna work, man." You listen to him. If a client doesn't listen to me when Im about to tattoo them, I'm not doing it because later on they can come back saying "Oh My GoD tHiS lOoKs AwFuL".

Yes, however, you do know what you're getting into if you apply to be a canvas on Ink Master. Anything can happen, the artists are not in their comfortzone, they're limited in time AND they have the stress of winning the competition. If you're gonna be difficult about it, don't apply.

I find that so funny because if you look up his portfolio- if it’s not tribal, it’s color. I think quite a few of his tattoos are unique and cool with the approach he takes to coloring. However, his line work and shading needs vast improvement. His downfall was applying that unique approach to coloring to tattoos that did not suit it. He has a very neat turtle, water color owl, and a Japanese woman surrounded by Sakura tattoos that are particularly cool in his portfolio. He has a neat cover up with another more realistic/water color turtle as well. I don’t think he’s completely untalented- but I don’t think he’s experienced/talented enough in terms of the technical aspect to approach anything outside his niche. It’s obvious he’s from Hawaii based on his portfolio and it seems like he doesn’t branch out much outside Hawaiian or Asian themes.

Halo's elimination was the most undeserved and heartbreaking. His pieces were beautiful. He is a true artist.
Both cancer breast pieces were simply amazing but for me Halo was the clear winner in that and i found less to fault in his 're-do' of the flowers mainly that it isnt perfection but still good pretty damn good to me. The coverup for Matty for me was obviously flawed compared to not perfection so while both are solid artists i too had Halo advancing.

I honestly think they are there so long and they are just moving there faces at random times. Then it’s all edited to look like they are sneering and laughing at each other.
To be fair, the editors of the show specifically cut to smirks of contestants just to push storylines and narratives. We don’t know if he or anyone else is actually smirking at those critiques.

Tbh, these people being canvases know what they’re getting into. If it’s a shop where you’re paying for it, you’re absolutely right. However in this scenario you need to work with the competitor.
They’ll be the same people to say the customer comes first and if you’re hurting them you shouldn’t be tattooing them. Good thing I know this show is fake, I only watch it because it passes time lol

Grasping at straws I think. I imagine he felt like they should've been more considerate due to the complications he's faced (starting his tattoo career late, prejudice against homosexual people). But he signed up to compete against who should be some of the best tattoo artists despite being inexperienced, as he basically admits in the outburst.

Out of curiosity, I looked up Rolands portfolio because I was seriously questioning how he made it on the show. He honestly has a small handful of very nice pieces out of the 33 I looked at. His turtle pieces are very nice, his has a water color owl that’s cute, and he has a very amazing Japanese (I think?) piece with a woman surrounded by Sakura. I do find it funny that he stated that color wasn’t his thing when truly- if it’s not a tribal piece, it’s color. Looking closely at his portfolio however, his technical skills aren’t great. Particularly with outlining and shading. He approaches color in his pieces like painting- which works really really well for some but looks like a childish disaster in others. You can tell he’s from Hawaii in his work. Lots of aquatic and tribal themes- which he excels at along with pretty ladies. Outside of that niche, he does poorly. I also noticed that he’s a painter on the side. It seems like he tries to combine what he is able to achieve on actual canvas/paper to human canvases and not very well. Quite a bit of his better pieces look like clip art in a way. Anyways, I think the judges saw his portfolio and saw the few awesome pieces and were hoping there would be at least one time that he would yield something strong. Sadly, he failed. 😕
That colored eyeball is one of the worst tattoos I’ve ever seen , period. I have no idea how this guy got on national television for a tattoo competition.

I lost all respect for the judges opinions and choices based on how long they allowed Roland to be in the competition....totally irresponsible to have favoritism towards a contestant who tattoos so poorly.
lol…it’s a reality show. Competition or not, what’s a reality show without drama? It’s all part of the package. Roland helped make the show interesting. Might not be fair to others but it helps ratings.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying it’s right. I’m just saying that’s what reality shows are about. The ratings do matter.
Obviously ratings matter. All shows want and need good ratings. Especially reality shows. But tattoos affect the canvas way more than the artist. If they’re making money off another person’s loss, that’s not good. Drama is good, but when it affects someone who doesn’t benefit from it, it shouldn’t be there.
This definitely was not favoritism. I guarantee you Nunez and Oliver wanted to eliminate Roland, but the producers most likely told them for TV ratings to keep him around.
How Roland stayed this far into the competition astounds me, and I'm not even a tattoo artist.
I’d hate to be the first guy who didn’t even get a shop just to watch Bubba and Roland finish at the bottom week after week

I am so annoyed with people saying “color isn’t my thing” or “I’m a black and grey artist”. Why tf are you on ink masters?! INK MASTERS!!!! You have to be able to do everything.

They are both valid criticisms, your job is to give a canvas what they want but you are the artist, you are the one taking concept to final piece and you can't let a canvas dictate the how of that. Its your job to translate from pencil concept to ink on skin.
Its the same as a portrait painter, the commissioner can ask for things they want in the painting but they need to have fuck all input into how colours are blended and applied.to the canvas.
You have to be confident enough to say no and skilled enough to explain why.

PlasticNotPlayco first off the last bit is a joke clearly but in all honesty an improvement that’s still that poorly done has no room for the competition and I think it’s hilarious they gave him so many chances unlike other talented competitors who were also improving. Sausage is the most underrated tattoo artist, everyone seemed to not like him. But I found him the nicest to his canvasses and his work was fab!

it shows his professionalism, but also the artist saying he’s gay was so out of the blue like that has nothing to do with tattooing
I think Chris was right but sexual "preference" made me cringe. That word makes it sound like homosexuality is a choice. "Orientation" would have been miles better.
