Dell is a piece of shit, my alienware MX17 have a mxm card GPU and it should be upgradable but it's not. Dell prevents to do it through the BIOS. It's just a marketing solution for make more money with a very expensive solution. Alienware Laptop is always too expensive by the way.
Dell has done this for a long time. The oldest i can think of is the GTX 280M in MXM form factor (probably older stuff too). But that you can change the display outputs and a desktop CPU at the same time, i have to give them credit for that move.
Now you just have to hope that Dell holds their end of the bargain and keeps producing the upgradable Graphics cards... I’d guess it’s 50/50 that it last more than 2 years
This is actually great. should this become a thing (as it failed to become an actual thing before), if dell sells the barebone laptop without processor and gpu, and they manufacture at least xx60, xx70, xx80 gpus, this will be a trend, soon laptop manufacturers will actually compete with the upgradeable laptop market. I plan to build my rig this year, a generation older build. If this is promised to be released soon, ill hold my cash until this becomes available, im not an alienware fanatic but it should be worth the wait as an added option.
Honestly, if they at least release the next generation compatible with it? that be more than enough. I don't expect them to support it beyond that, it wouldn't make sense profit wise.
The problem with this is, that the engineering fees for creating such a "mobile desktop graphics card" is going to be pretty high, so they need to see a lot of them. But if this is for the true elite who buys xx80 or xx80ti GPUs and i9 CPUs then there's not going to be that big of a sale. So they need to implement this upgrade-ability for other laptops as well, maybe even hope that other OEMs also jump on this ship and they figure out some standard for the graphics card.

Or, the ones where the driver gives the cops permission to search, and the cops physically destroy the seats, dash, carpet, etc. while looking for contraband, and when the driver protests, the cops just tell him "You gave us permission."
*You guys need to hand the dbrand Prism over to the least phone-techy video-cleared person on your team, and have them clean the screens and apply it to a few phones.* Let us see if the protector and applicator really holds up to its promises. Also do blind tests around the office comparing feel to glass protectors. *If(!)* precise and bubble-free application is actually as easy as they claim, this thing needs way more promotion.
After doing some screen protectors for other people, gotten to the point only 2 have ever had bubbles and both on the cheap plastic covers, the rest have gone down bubble free, it is the alignment that is good to spot on that is the harder part.
@@wobblysauce My personal experience, and from feedback from friends and family, is that the rigid glass protectors are easier to deal with if flat. The curved ones, not quite. Those few that has silicon adhesive on the entire protector anyway, those with only a thin strip around the outer edges are easier, but they're also pretty shaite in use. Alignment is always a challenge. On many models, even if the screen is "flat" it had a slight curve at the very end towards the bezels, so if you get it half a mm off, you get an air (->dust&grime)gap. One of the difficulties I've seen for novices with softer protectors, including myself, is time. To align it well, apply it while working out any small bubbles underway, it takes enough time that dust or fibre particles in the air reach the screen or protector. And we've all had poor success with the do-it-in-the-bathroom-after-running-the-shower technique. Some people seem just better adept at it, some get a lot of training. But nost people have only put on a few, or none at all (themselves). Adding to that, these brand-name protectors tend to be rather expensive, so you'll be wanting to get a satisfactory result on the first go if possible, not order a 3-pack. If this alignment arrangement can help this in a serious manner, it may very well be worth its premium for us mere screen protector muggles and mortals. Especially if they do full-cover for curved screens. And I'm kinds hoping this thing works out, dbrand has a good track record for precision. Lets see if that can transfer well to this kind of user application. TheStaniG Maybe - Janice might be a wizkid with smartphones, we don't know yet. I think(?)

I would fine with a 3 inch thick laptop when it comes to gaming or production work. I always wonder why they do not take a full size GPU and turn it on its side and make a custom motherboard slot for it if not just use riser cables at this point. The GPU could then be cooled by ventilation from the bottom with fans or by a custom AIO.
Have you seen how thick the 20 series cards are? Not to mention the power requirements for desktop components is higher, and a full GPU would give the laptop a 20 minute battery life
@@Mike-mt4ln ... even with current gaming laptop you do not really use them unless they are plugged in, and the 20 series cards are not too big with a water block on them even with fans they are around 2 inches thick. I am sure many people would love a chassis they could drop their desktop CPU, GPU, and SSD in when traveling for the holidays or those that cover events such as CES and would love to be able to edit at their hotels or even on the convention floor with desktop performance without spending another $3,000 to $4,000 on a laptop.
A desktop GPU in a laptop is do-able but not in a desktop-form factor. They can spread out the heatsink and air flow properly in the laptop. If they stuck with the desktop form factor it would be like a module that would be the thickest part of the laptop. Would need to be water cooled because no room for air flow below the blower fan after all that t.h.i.c.c.ness. 20 minutes battery life? You shouldn't game on battery anyway. Nvidia Optimus to shut the GPU off when on battery.
Problem with this is that the GPU module is proprietary and you're dependent on the vendor for any upgrades. MxM was better in that it was open. Mind you in practice you couldn't upgrade a notebook with an MxM module which had a higher power consumption than the one you were removing because the cooling solution wouldn't be able to deal with it. I suspect that if you want an upgradeable system you're probably stuck with a desktop. Which isn't as bad as it used to be - you could build an ITX system if you want it small or a full size one if you want cheap parts and lots of thermal headroom. Sure you're not going to carry it around in a rucksack but I think a lot of people can live with that if it means they can buy commodity hardware when they need to upgrade.
Yea the new gen CPU (edit: GPU) has to exactly match the the location of the previous GPU die or manufacturer may have to develop a new heatsink for it.
Agreed about the GPU. A proprietary form factor can easily go away when the manufacturer deems it no longer profitable to make, which means you won't be able to upgrade anymore. In that respect, I kind of prefer the external GPU option, just give it enough PCI lanes so as not to lose performance over a desktop. Also, what are the odds that Intel actually releases a CPU after the 9900K that still uses the same socket?
@@neurokinetik64ES "Also, what are the odds that Intel actually releases a CPU after the 9900K that still uses the same socket?" Well for the last few generations they seem to have swapped sockets almost every generation, so the odds are not good. E.g. even though Coffee Lake used an LGA1151 socket like previous CPUs but you still needed a new motherboard. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1151#LGA_1151_revision_2 " While physical dimensions remain unchanged, the updated socket re-assigns some reserved pins, adding power and ground lines to support the requirements of 6-core and 8-core CPUs. The new socket also relocates the processor detection pin, breaking compatibility with earlier processors and motherboards. As a result, desktop Coffee Lake CPUs are officially not compatible with the 100 (original Skylake) and 200 (Kaby Lake) series chipsets.[32] Similarly, 300 series chipsets only support Coffee Lake and are not compatible with Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs." And IMO given that x86 per thread performance hasn't been increasing particularly fast if you're going to swap CPUs you might as well swap out the memory subsystem for the latest one too, which is going to require a new motherboard. Of course if you use AMD they're better about keeping chipsets compatible with new CPUs.
@@user-qf6yt3id3w That was more of rhetorical question. I figure the odds being "slim to none". So what you end up with here is the IDEA that the laptop will be upgradeable, but when it really comes down to it, there won't be any upgrades available.

I decided to opt for the NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super for the more open architecture and higher storage space potential than the sleeker, thinner Alienware M17 R3 with the RTX 3070/3080 GPUs that just dropped. And though I know it will be a long time before I have to worry about it, I didn't want to be stuck with RAM chips soldered to the board like it is on the M17. But I wanted to see the inside of this beast with my own eyes before it arrives, because I couldn't be sure I understood what I was reading--that it actually has the potential for a LOOOOT more storage space. I was nervous that it would be *just* two PCIe slots, or *just* one PCIe slot with hard drive bay depending on what configuration you ordered, but no. I work with big graphic files and 3D files as well as gaming, and that is going to be such a Godsend to be able to throw another drive in there. The fact that I now know that I can upgrade the GPU at a later time is...well, it's not just icing on the cake, it's the whole dessert menu. It would be very cool if they or someone at leasts reverse engineers the pinout :D
I think it comes down to whether or not it's economical to do it even on lower end graphics.

Looks like Janice is going to make another appearance...

@@danwat1234 They didn't do that on the NVS 3100m.
Linus dropping the veil on great ideas.
@@neurokinetik64ES "Also, what are the odds that Intel actually releases a CPU after the 9900K that still uses the same socket?"
Well for the last few generations they seem to have swapped sockets almost every generation, so the odds are not good. E.g. even though Coffee Lake used an LGA1151 socket like previous CPUs but you still needed a new motherboard.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1151#LGA_1151_revision_2
" While physical dimensions remain unchanged, the updated socket re-assigns some reserved pins, adding power and ground lines to support the requirements of 6-core and 8-core CPUs. The new socket also relocates the processor detection pin, breaking compatibility with earlier processors and motherboards. As a result, desktop Coffee Lake CPUs are officially not compatible with the 100 (original Skylake) and 200 (Kaby Lake) series chipsets.[32] Similarly, 300 series chipsets only support Coffee Lake and are not compatible with Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs."
And IMO given that x86 per thread performance hasn't been increasing particularly fast if you're going to swap CPUs you might as well swap out the memory subsystem for the latest one too, which is going to require a new motherboard.

GG dell. Thank you for actually moving laptop tech forward in a meaningful way. Ok, now this is ACTUALLY epic.
Dungeon Blaster it's not gg
Alienware have been doing this for years from 2008 with their m1x series. Linus just overhyped this and obviously never opened a laptop like this.
There's many people doing crazy things on a desktop replacement Alienwares with custom water-cooled heatsink.
Is that Porky from Looney Tunes? 😂😂 (5:44)
10:12 this blond girl hahahhahahaha
Moudi Pueyo she was excited lol
She wants him inside.
chamade166 Linus is married & has 3 kids, though.
She was going to clap lol
how crazy is it that Linus draws so much attention that strangers in the room want to clap when he finishes a video
This is how power of influence look like! I love how I always get a gimps of the floor room personnel just standing there to watch Linus do his shooting. And than, they are to put everything back where it was, before Linus, and even repair it if Linus breaks it. This guy is such a big name on UA-cam that they let him do whatever he needs to, in order to promote their products.
Almost a year later this is still the best laptop I’ve ever seen and Linus always does a great video 🔥🔥😅
for the price it better be
#11 ON TRENDING, GJ LINUS!
Alienware should really sponsor you

That did not age well
why what happened?

And that my friends, shows why Linus is heads and shoulders above any other tech UA-camr. I've been in sales my entire life, like to think I know my craft exceptionally well. I will tell you - This out of all your video's was the most impressive to me. Sharp, quick whit, extremely intelligent. I think I enjoyed watching the reaction of the people in the background when you segued from the tear down into the product placement the most. Bravo Linus!
The thermal paste.... oh god
how did linus not notice it
And one of the same problems they’ve been having for generations is that it needs a repaste or it’ll cook itself.
Disghustin'!
Maybe it has been opened up a few times by other reviewers?
@@zylerk29 as the owner of a 17R4 that overheats like crazy if I dont lock the CPU at 2.7GHz and underclock the GTX1080, yep.
THANK YOU ALIENWARE! THIS IS WHAT WE'VE ALL WANTED
Top 10 redemption arcs in anime.
My 2014 Alienware 17 R1 has an upgradeable CPU and Graphics.
There once was a legend called Linus.
TheLinus27?
who died in a slap fight
Good job alienware/dell! They deserve some kudos for 1. having a good idea and 2. letting linus take apart their prototype during CES.
Count-Linus ah ah ah ah... * the count laugh *
If he did that for every screw I'd mw sooo annoyed....lol
"you coming out baby, yeah you want to!" that's what he said
Level 1 Linus mic.
Level 399 TechLinked mic.
That's how LMG works
My 2012 Alienware M17x R4 is still going strong in 2019, after being hauled in over 50 flights across Europe, Asia and North America. The external case is scratched from all the luggage suitcases its been crammed in & thrown around on flights, but the internals & screen, are solid. Also never had to service anything on it (I think a key popped off and i just pushed it back in, once, maybe in 2015?). Dell makes really solid laptops.
