- Planet of the Apes is a 2001 American science fiction adventure film directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by William Broyles Jr., Lawrence Konner, and Mark Rosenthal. It is loosely based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Pierre Boulle and serves as a remake of the 1968 film version. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti, and Estella Warren. It tells the story of astronaut Leo Davidson (Wahlberg) crash-landing on a planet inhabited by intelligent apes. The apes treat humans as slaves, but with the help of an ape named Ari (Bonham Carter), Leo starts a rebellion.
By 2001, director Tim Burton has seem amazing financial success with his movies. So, one would think that this would translate into being able to make a competent reimaging of the classic PLANET OF THE APES. Sadly however that is was no the case. And The movie we got is one that is wildly considered one of the worst remakes ever made, and set the APES franchise back a full Decade.
In this video, we give you a full break down, as well a review of this disaster, in hopes that you will avoid it all together, and watch the newer, and much better, Planet of the Apes movies instead.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on my opinion of the 1968 Planet of the Apes movie. So let me clear it up.
When I say the movie is “not high art”, that is not an insult to the movie. High art as I understand it, means “something that appeals to the upper crust of society. Something made for the elite class that has a lot of money” examples of this would be Opera, classical music, fine art paintings etc. Low art refers to things that appeal to the masses. Examples of this would be comic books and television. George Carlin famously said that stand up comedy is low art form. The plays of William Shakespeare, at least when they were written, were considered to be low art, and so were American movies, because they were once considered to be mindless escapism. Which is why the word “movie” exists, to separate American film from what was considered high art European film.
So when I say Planet of the Apes isn’t “high art” I am simply saying that its messaging, albeit clever isn’t terribly sophisticated. Which is fine. It doesn’t have to be. I still enjoy it very much, and appreciate its place in the pantheon of science fiction.
Now I see what you mean,( although I'm not sure all intellectuals don't appreciate P.o the Apes), probably the Kubrick cult wouldnt be so impressed by it especially as it was released at a similar time. Bright educated people SHOULD apreciate the film, as the writing is near flawless, intelligent & very clever both for story structure & the dialogue, the original film is on my important film list (& there arent many on that, it used to average one a decade- CLOCKWORK ORANGE, ROBOCOP, TIME MACHINE, DEATH WISH & a few others
Saying that POA isn't high art has nothing to do with how it's appreciated but how it's presented. It's not pretentious about it's messages and themes, which are to it's credit, It's able to be easily digested. And in my video, I praised the OG movie for it's writing of the 3 lead ape characters in contrast to the poor writing of the apes in the 2001 version.
Pointing out that POA isn't particularly sophisticated was never meant to be an insult. Punk Rock is my favorite music genre, and it's about as un sophisticated as you can get. I was just trying to make those who haven't seen it, aware of the type of movie that it is. But perhaps I didn't make that clear in the video. I understand that sometimes, with the level of sarcasm I use in my reviews, it can be hard to tell if I am praising a movie sometimes. In this situation I was.
To the film’s credit, I do think that the practical costumes/prosthetics/makeup of the ape characters in this film are fantastic.

Burton's 2001 movie ending is the closest to how the novel ended.
Yes, Burton's movie ending was closer to the novel's ending, but Burton tacks it onto the end without an inkling of foreshadowing or quality storytelling. The ending is not "set up" as the movie's ending, unlike the ending of the original movie. It's like someone tried to uncircumcise a baby by gluing a foreskin onto someone where it no longer fits, serves a purpose or even applies. It was a dismal flop and deserves to be regarded as such.
I'd argue Burton screwed the pooch so hard it inspired the more recent trilogy in an effort to erase his attempt from history. So, in a way, we actually owe him a thank you.
it wasn't that bad. the ending was awesome and they could of made an original story about it in the sequel. burton doesn't do good sequels so he makes them single entities. human stuff.
none the less me myself would love an unofficial sequel to the ending of 2001. might of be really really rad . world building. would of made rise of the planet of the apes feel better. men vs humans in the city, world destruction creating what we see now or other. in a world where marky mark and his funky punch annihilate a bunch of stinking dirty apes that fucked with his timeline. those who join in his peril posses he finds along the way find ways to destroy their precious eco system.

The funny thing is, because there is time travel involved in the OG planet of the apes, this movie is technically part of the same universe as the OG and the most recent series. It explains time as a highway with an infinite amount of lanes. The Tim Burton movie is just a really crappy lane lol. That is why as a die hard POTA nerd, I HAVE to include this movie in my collection.

Say what you will, I liked this version. It's by no means a masterpiece but it's a fun watch every few yrs
I liked the movie. It's just "in fashion" to hate on things. That's what gets the clicks. The movie isn't the best "apes" movie, but it wasn't bad.

This movie was not Tim Burton‘s fault. It was the studio executives at Fox who interfered with his movie.

True. However, this is done in the original as a way to reinforce the themes of anti racism in the movie, and Zera doesn’t want to kiss Taylor but reluctantly agrees because she is aware that he wants to kiss her to show his gratitude for her help. Their kiss is not romantic at all. Now you could argue that Leo is kissing Ari for the same reason, but he kisses her like they are lovers. Which, granted may not be the intent of the character but it comes off that way. And of course a big reason for that is because Ari obviously has a sexual attraction to Leo. It’s obvious through her body language, her eye contact, and how she feels about the human woman that along with them getting close to Leo. So yes, the OG does have these characters kiss. But for very different reasons.

Um... Considering that 10 years later, the franchise got a full reboot which told a reimagined history of the Planet from the Apes' perspective and it's been doing fine ever since... I'd argue it actually proved to be a good thing in the long run. Even if Burton Planet is tied with Battle for the Planet as the weakest one of the lot from an objective standpoint. Just... THAT twist ending. Was Burton trying to say that once you've been to The Planet of the Apes, you can never go back home?
POA is a classic masterpiece. So underrated. Some of Hestons best work imo.
I have to say, I did like the idea Burton was going for in this movie in regards to the origin of the evolved apes.
If Tim Burton had gone into Botany rather than filmmaking, the cinematic world would have lost nothing of lasting value.
The crazy part is this movie killed it at the box office!
The Rick Baker makeup effects are amazing Tim Roth should have been nominated for an academy award and Paul giamatti was pretty damn awesome too

This one is the the best of all of Planet of the apes more gritty, bloody, futuristic, twist, traitors,dystopian. I can keep going it’s just that fantastic .
Thade was a genuinely awesome over the top character who stole every scene he was in. Beyond that, this movie is a hard miss.
It still would've been interesting to see how they'd have done a sequel.
I liked this movie. In the novel the main character and the female monkey. Became vary close. Borferline had feelings for each other. So having that in the movie is taken from the original novel.
I went to the cinema to see this when it first hit the screens and after 20 minutes i wanted to leave but endured to the end. The two saving graces of this movie was 1. Tim Roth's acting and 2. that the planet was not Earth so it really has zero connection with the other movies past and present!
We need to normalize not attacking directors, because Tim Burton is a victim of higher-up greed. There’s an unknowable amounts of stories that don’t get told, only because the people actually making the movie don’t get a say sometimes. That’s why Marvel got bad, that’s why DC got bad, that’s why Star Wars got bad. Once you have people that aren’t writers or directors trying to have their way, that’s when something like this movie happens.

Tim was rushed by the producers with completely absurd deadlines, he couldn't work as he wanted, he didn't even have time to finalize the soundtrack with Elfman which is nevertheless brilliant. The film remains for me the best of the saga, the most careful and closest to the original with very few digital special effects and still shot in the old-fashioned way.
Tim Burton is the person who has the least amount of blame.
20th Century Fox had no idea what they wanted the remake to be and just made a mess and got the writers of Superman 4 aboard who kept rewriting the script as it was filmed. Burton himself also found the experience awful.

As a kid I had this on VHS and had the action figures (it was blue). I loved this movie as it was my intro to POTA franchise..but finally watching it last weekend for the first time in a while I see why it’s hated/forgotten and does drag on for too long 🤣. But the makeup/designs are great!

The movie wasn't that bad. The females makeup was a bit off for sure. But I enjoy this movie all the time. And Ive always wanted to see what was going to happen with that ending!

I remember convincing my family to watch this with me instead of Jurassic park 3 in the cinema... When it was over I apologized to them... A few weeks later I watched JP3 and felt vindicated lol

Tim Burton & Mark Wahberg, etc. revived a long dormant franchise in 2001, one which had been asleep (and practically dead) for nearly 30 years. Their Apes movie had more in U.S. domestic sales, adjusted for inflation, than any other POTA movie, ever (out of ten and counting). It was a good movie, and they didn't even get to use CGI graphics for the makeup.
I would counter that by saying that they made a steaming pile of crap, that also happened to make money. Thanks for watching the video.

This was actually a good movie and people just like to rag on it because critics did back in the day. To me its better than the cgi crap they keep pumping out today.
The plot of the film is certainly messed up, and the final twist only serves to further complicate everything (has Davidson returned to his Earth? Or is that a parallel universe where the current Thade ended up founding his own dynasty of rulers? ), however there are some things that make me appreciate it: the make up first and foremost, which I consider excellent and credible in almost all the scenes; Tim Roth's interpretation, which gives life to a real villain (although I appreciate Koba, for who he is and for the balance achieved with Cesare, Thade provides, in my opinion, greater stage presence).
I have to give credit to the fact that the film is not so forgettable, as happened to other reboots of the early 2000s, in short, having seen it once you remember it quite easily... it must be said that, in any case, it is not it is comparable neither to the progenitor of 1968, nor to the trilogy with Caesar... as it does not have its own identity. Even Burton's usual style is absent here, although I fear it would have been very difficult to fit it into a story about a civilization of apes.
I do agree that the makeup is very good.

Interesting how the ending is one of the most hated scenes, where as I didnt mind it, explaining it? well there is much time warping in this version, & so Wahlberg, lands on what he thinks is Earth, BUT has gone through another time warp, on this planet Thade has led an Ape rebellion in the 17th Century, against human oppression & become an Abraham Lincoln/Hitler type leader,(or the new law giver even) the Ape population don't know his hidden dictative agenda but both Wahlberg & we the viewing public do.
You may not know that in the novel this is MUCH closer to what actually happens, in the conclusion, & what would be a better ending? they needed something different.

I assume you do mean the dormant old films that finished up LONG before this version was made, I do agree about the woeful miscasting of wooden Wahlberg, who is NOT the screen presance of Charlton Heston (even though HE isnt the most charismatic of actors himself) BUT you do believe his anger & frustration about his unique situation, unlike here, its also a problem of bad writing & poor dialogue, but I can't fault the concept too much, they DIDNT do a scene for scene remake, instead going for a training exorcise in space with much time warping. The problem seems to be the approach, the...stle of it all."
The 1968 film IS a work of high Art (the masky looking Ape make ups, are quite dated now, it's true) BUT the story concept STILL stands up to this day, both for social comment, & originality, because the political real World problems of 1968 - cold war, racism are still with us

I disagree. It's a decent movie. I feel like the new POTA movies are not creative. But that's Hollywood.
To be fair this film was in developmental hell for a long time. Even Schwarzenegger was tapped to star at one time and then when it got green lit, it was rushed into theaters. The last trilogy was done with respect to the source material, this was a cash grab, albeit, the effects were good.

Tim Burton's version, while inferior to the original series of films, was nonetheless a good version, good story, and had a killer ending. The new series of films have been mostly dull and lifeless. I'm hoping Kingdom will change that.

Why did I accidentally watch this movie last night and it was actually good. I liked it , thought it was funny. A bit corny a times but a good watch.
Mark Wahlberg isn't a great actor, hardly an actor at all, Oscar's, and all that crap are meaningless.
His emotional range is BLAND like cardboard.

He's fine in the right role (a blue collar tough guy, average joe dad, or a comical meathead idiot), but in this film, he's definitely miscast. Even he HIMSELF says the movie wasn't very good.
