    If you don’t mind.. can explain for all those trying to remove for the first time step by step. For example I know for a fact that first thing is to disconnect the negative cable. And then proceed. I learned the hard way.. I’m not a mechanic. Just trying to save a couple of bucks. Great video thank

      If you google online Nissan Frontier 1998 service manual you can usually find them after some digging. It should detail how to remove the cluster, most of it is shown in this video. Once the cluster is removed, you need to remove the odometer, and re-solder all the pins on the back of the odometers circuit board by adding fresh solder. I just did the cluster in my Nissan Primera, it seems way more daunting than it actually is. Though like anything it helps to have some experience in electronic repair.
      I used a temperature controlled soldering iron to heat up each pin, and melted new lead solder into the pins. I also used a magnifying glass to look through while soldering (google helping hands with magnifying glass). For larger pins I used around 300 degrees, for smaller ones I used 200-250 degrees, but use your best judgement. I also used flux to make sure the lead solder melted into the pins. You will also want to use the magnifying glass so you can look for broken solder joints, missing solder. Since you will be melting fresh solder there is a chance you might bridge two or more pins together, creating a short circuit (bad), so the magnifying glass can help you find them, and solder wick and your soldering iron can help you remove additional solder. If you take a systematic approach to this, checking each pin as you solder them, then the risks can be mitigated.
      In my case I found one of the main chips had no solder left on the pins (very small pins). This caused the cluster to work intermittently, every bump the cluster would come back to life or stop working.
      There are other videos on youtube showing how to remove the cluster and resolder it, heaps of really good soldering videos as well. Hopefully I haven't discouraged you from attempting this repair yourself, regardless best of luck! 🙂

    On my 1980 datsun 720 pickup the speedometer is stuck at full speed. 24 yrs ago when I got it, it was working, but I took off the lens to clean out the dust and bump something and it's all the way full speed on dial and just stays there.??? don't have a clue on what to do to fix it??

    I have a 2000 with a charging issue... new battery and alternator.... read something about combination meter maybe the culprit not completing the circut....?
    would a new (or refurb) instrument cluster take care of this issue? Truck runs great.... hate to dump in more than its worth to fix....

    How can you tell if the cluster is bad or if its just a bad speed sensor

    • @jctoad
      @jctoad 4 роки тому

      Hopefully you have it figured out. You can get a back wheel off the ground. Disconnect the cable from the sensor and put a volt meter on the sensor. Start and put in gear. You should see the sensor put out some voltage when it is being spun. At least that's what it did for me. If there is voltage you could still have a wiring problem and not the cluster. Check for corrosion. There is a connector for that harness behind the kick panel in the footwell on the passenger. side also.
