  • $20. DIY Kayak Stake Out - Push Pole - Full Build - No Tools
    So the replacement fiberglass pole showed up. Only took three days so that was awesome. Thanks UPS. This is a really quick and easy build that does not require any tools. I did change things up by switching up the handle to a more classic T-handle versus my last build where I just used a bicycle handlebar grip. I also left the pole at 8' versus cutting it down to 7' like my last one.

    I have built several of these and I add a little JB Weld to the tip as a wear coating. I fish in an area with a lot of oyster beds so the tip can get dulled after numerous uses. The JB Weld can be reapplied over time to extend the life of your anchor pole. Good video. It really a simple and cheap build once you locate the components.

    I tipped mine with a 3-4” hex screw that was maybe 1/2” in diameter so when I cut the hex head off and drilled a hole in the pole I could fit and epoxy it into the pole. It created a nice metal tip and provided a way to screw into compacted sand. Definitely took a little longer then your tip but I’m happy with how well it holds. Keep up the good work! Like the videos.

    You mentioned it was polished. I heard that some of these fiberglass poles have small threads that separate and will stick your hand. Ever have an issue with that using this type of pole? thx.

      Most reputable sellers provide a finished surface fiberglass pole. They are smooth and can be handled with your bare hands without risk. If you bang it around, scrape it up, etc., you might have some problems down the road. As with any manufacturing process though, you can have the one oddball slip thru that will put glass strands in your hands as soon as you first handle it.

    Hey Steve, how about a follow up? Did you go with the crab float, like to see your final version after tweaking. Got a pair arriving next week and was planning on using pool noodle for float on pole

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 років тому

      I used both the pool noodle and then added a crab float on a rope. Got tired of losing them. The pool noodle keeps it sticking upright and the crab float on the rope keeps it from falling off the kayak.

    does anyone know the difference between the 8 year stake and the regular stake that they sell on the a.m Leonard website?

  • @info1119
    @info1119 7 років тому

    Is the weight of the solid fiberglass what gives it the effect of staying in place? Why not use high pressure 3/4" pvc and drill multiple holes perforating it for water and allow it to grab sand/silt better? Just curious. Thanks for the info in advance Steve. You're the only guy who cares enough to take the time for his subscribers. Its appreciated.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 років тому

      PVC flexes too much. It will bow way too much when there is any current or wind pushing your kayak. It actually needs to be fairly rigid in order to work. Also, a lot of time the ground make up can be very hard so you need something that you can really put some force into the ground.

    • @JimMFishing

      Hard bottom is quite common around here - there's a lot of old coral bedrock. That is the only reason I went with a prefab with SS hardware - tip, 2 piece sections for ease of carrying a 10' pole, etc. I only wish mine had the tee handle so that it could play double duty as a short push pole should I get myself into a "situation".
