  • Jade Plant Pruning | To Encourage Branching. Pruning a Jade can be very beneficial to controlling its size and making a fuller looking plant. It can be very intimidating to make the first cut, but just have a plan of how you might want it to look before making that cut. I show how I prune my own jade plants to encourage more branching. Grew mine from a cutting in my dorm room window. I thought it had died, so I threw it in the trash. I few days later, I saw roots sticking up and I pulled the cutting out, planted it, and 3 years later it's huge and in desperate need of pruning! Thanks for the vid.

    Hello - my jade plant is over 13 years old and is large. Over the past few years, it has multiple large branches growing sideways or even drooping. But these branches are healthy and full of leaves. Your video has encouraged to start pruning the ones that are growing sideways/drooping and try re-planting them. But I plan to prune no more than 1-2 branches every few weeks (to avoid shocking the plant). Thanks a lot for sharing this video.

      Katie Petkewich glad to help they are very easy to keep just follow the advice also don’t let them get the branches too long just pinch the top out, you can wire the tree to get the shape you want. Pinching out helps the tree to produce more leaves basically for every one cut you will get two new leaves it is called ramification. Good luck and don’t worry they are difficult to kill. Joe

    Great video. My fault is not having a heavy enough hand with the pruning shears! I have a jade bonsai project going and so will try to be disciplined enough to keep pinching back. One thing I might ask...do you ever suggest cutting off some of the largest leaves right next to the stem? I suppose it depends on the overall look desired. I'm trying to go for as diminutive a look as I can - more like portulacaria - although with using crassula.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  3 роки тому

      I have removed those larger leaves near the stem to reduce weight. If you really haven't pruned a jade before then start small and get comfortable with it. As a general rule for me, I will always snip off anything that grows downwards.

    I didnt mention: if you prune the leaves/shoots off and only leave the tips leaved.....it will substantually increase height growth. Meaning a more tree-like plant, faster. This also allows for a stronger a straighter trunk and leaders

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  3 роки тому +16

      You can, but I would avoid cutting the main trunk or stem. I usually start pruning portions of drooping branches. You be surprised at how even taking a hand full of leaves off a stem will help with weight reduction.
      I cut the main stem once and although it did get new growth, it has been growing at a snails pace and looks ridiculous. Do your best with pruning.

    The comment about increasing size is half right a lot of light is important so is pot size if the plant is in a small pot it will restrict the growth so increase the pot size to encourage the tree to produce more roots and this will also increase foliage. Be sparing with watering I go a week without watering mine, if you study the leaves you will see they are less plump and start to look slightly wrinkled then water and make sure it is planted in good draining soil, they hate wet feet. Do all the above and you will have a happy Jade tree and owner.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  4 роки тому

      I don't know of any methods to get it to branch from lower in the stem. Pruning a small portion of the top might promote branching from lower. I have never had a branch start like that, but it never hurts to try.
      Once your jade grows, you could prune it and start a whole new plant and prune it to your liking over time. Hope this helps.

    I got a big Jade plant from a friend I don’t know how old it is. Seems to be healthy and doing fine I have even seen some new lead growth on it in the past months but I have noticed a lot of roots as well at many of the leaf scars. Many of these roots are new. Is this a bad sign? Also could I propagate with those roots, cutting beneath them? I have seen a few of your videos on Jades and I haven’t noticed roots on their stems

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  4 роки тому +2

      My understanding of those aerial roots on stems is from lack of moisture. Either not watering enough (and in some cases too much) or maybe even root problems with the plant. Make sure it is in appropriate soil (quick draining mixture) and gets plenty of sunlight.

    Very helpful to learn, thank you. I have a question though. My jade plant is years (10 or so) old, has never had too much sunlight up till now and has never been pruned, so it has many long single stems. Due to the increased sunlight it's now starting to shoot our branches everywhere, so all those stems are suddenly drooping from the weight. So how far back on the stem can I prune it? If I want to give it any structure to avoid the drooping then I'd have to cut 20cm or so from some stems. How much can it handle?

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  4 роки тому +6

      Hello and thanks for the question. I think as a general rule most say not to remove more then 20% of the foliage, but Jades are surprisingly forgiving. You can hack it to pieces and it will continue to grow. Cut it back as far as you think it needs to so the branches don't break. You'd be surprised though at how much those fat leaves weight. Personally I would start with cutting off a section with a few these and see how that goes. You can always cut off more, but you can't put it back if you cut too much.
      My general Jade pruning rule is I will cut back anything that is growing downward.

      If you keep it only indoors, place it in your brightest window in the house. Mine are all in a south facing window. Pruning a jade once it starts to grow can also encourage a thicker trunk. Hope this helps

    How long does it take for a small plant to grow? I have had it for 4 months and still no growth... I keep it next to a north facing window gets direct sunlight in the morning for about 3 hours. Thanks

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  4 роки тому

      Might not be enough light. Succulents needs about 6+ hours of bright light each day.

  • @daver9643
    @daver9643 2 роки тому +1

    Some people say direct sunlight is no good but I think direct sunlight is what will turn the leaves reddish on the edges and the leaf itself unless that could only happen with certain varieties? I have a dark green and hopefully it’s not going to turn red I have others that have read edges. BTW how much water do you give your plants and how often?

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 роки тому

      As long as it is acclimated to full sun then you shouldn't have a problem. My plants are in a south window and remain green.
      I will water them about once every 2 weeks in the summer and about once a month in the winter. I always evaluate the soil and leaves before watering any plant.

    Is there a way to prune so the stalk thickens without the Jade plant branching out into two new stalks?

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  3 роки тому +1

      You will always promote new growth when you prune because it stops a hormone then redirects it to produce growth elsewhere. Just keep pruning it back to the size you want I guess. This is about the extent of my knowledge on this hahaha

    I have a few questions. My jade plant has lost all of its small branches over the years and now only has 2 small new branches growing out of the top. It's mostly just a tall stick at this point. I want to encourage new growth but hate to cut off the only two small branches it has, but it's also very tall (8") and will likely end up top heavy if I leave it be. Should I wait for the two branches to grow and then Prune each when they get bigger, or just shorten the plant and completely cut the top off? I had a small lower branch that recently got knocked off and still has a small bit of the node left at the trunk, maybe I can make a small cut on that to try and encourage growth there too? I realize now it's not getting enough light and severely needs repotted. It's been in poor soil for many years now. I'm going to repot and slowly move it into brighter light. Is it best to wait to prune after repotting? I hate to give up on this plant, it's quite old and was given to me by my mom.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  3 роки тому +1

      Hello and thanks for the comment. I would definitely repot it first giving it some fresh soil (cactus and succulent mix) and even better yet.....in terracotta! And absolutely move it to brighter light. Feel free to send me a picture on my Instagram ofbthe plant as it's very tough to give pruning advice without seeing the plant. I'm still probably going to say check it completely back hahaha

    soo i have a jade plant that i bought it was about 8 months old it wasn’t small it had like 4 layers of leaves. now it’s growing new leaves. the only problem i have was that the curtain rod fell on it 🙄 and he’s kind of to the bent. but i can’t put a stick bc he’s still too small and the leaves are in the way to put support where it should go. one of the sticks i used kind of peeled lightly on ones of leaves and that spot got like white ish like if it’s healed . i’m scared all this could kill my plant. Also one of the big leaves (first layer) that is on the jade it was half connected to the stem, so i ended up taking it off bc the leaf didn’t look dark green like the rest it started looking grayish on the upper part of the leave and wrinkled. half of it was already off the stem. so what should i do? what taking off the leave a good idea ? i don’t know if my jade was propagated bc i believe the first leaves should come off. I’m looking all through youtube with no responses at all 😭

    how old did you say the first was? holy cow i rooted a cutting from my moms two years ago and its half that size... it was her moms , when rooting a cutting does the plant start its life cycle over or still think its the same age as the mother plant? reason i ask is hers will bloom every so often and put out flowers ive read that only old mature plants bloom...

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 роки тому

      Hello and I'm so sorry for the late reply. This video is from about two years ago and the plant would have been about 3 years old (since taking the cutting)
      I think because it has to establish new roots and growth the plant restarts. I have a 15 year old Jade that has never flowered because it needs certain conditions along with a more mature plant. Mine are in a constant climate, but plants in general flower when the are stressed. Check out my other more recent videos on jades if you are interested

    Does this also apply to Senecio Jacobsenii/kleinia petraea? As a brand new plant owner, I went in to a local plant shop asking for a crassula ovata jade plant, and was told that trailing jade was the same plant, just grown out more….. I know now that they’re completely different plants!!! The guy just wanted the sale, as the plant was a bunch of barely rooted cuttings, where half were already rotted 😥 The ones that survived are now the leggiest branches known to man…. 7+ inch long branches that are bare for the first 5…. Does anyone have any recommendations for encouraging branching (or just growth in general) on the clipped parts? I’m not worried about the cuttings, I’m just worried about where to cut & if taking cuttings in the winter will be detrimental to the plant!!

    Do you have to root the pieces that you just pruned before planting ??

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  3 роки тому

      I let the ends callous over for a couple days and stick the unrooted cutting into soil. It should root fairly quick on its own. Water like you would a normal jade plant. The soil does not have to be wet for it to root. If it is consistently wet the cutting with just rot.
