Disney movies are often deep. Cinderella was about percervernce conquers all. Beauty and the beast was that everyone has a little good in them. Hunchback was don't judge a book by it's cover. Yea there are some dumb ones but some of the deepest stories in history are directed toward kids.
While slightly romanticised, Pocahontas (this bit in particular) is a prime example of the tragic violence born of misunderstanding. The colonists and native Americans both were totally unfamiliar with each other, and only fought out of fear of the unknown.
What did the Native Americans do? They were the one who suffered, the only problems the colonist's face was their own problems since they hadn't come prepared.
@@jake_3728 Actually, they murdered the real Governor Radcliffe for no reason and some Native Americans are asking people to stop saying that every Native American was innocent and peaceful when that was far from the truth
@@josterio2.071 Who? I would like to know so I can have a more rounded understanding of the situation between the colonists and the native Americans. I first heard this song around five years old...33 now and it still is easily one of the, if not, most chilling Disney songs bar none. The original lyrics were way more vicious.
This and Hellfire are the most brutal songs in Disney song history. And by the way, I don't know why they changed it, but at the part where he shouts, "Let's go GET a few men!" In the original song, before the remastered DVD release, he says, "Let's go KILL a few men!"

Well the songs, I think sometimes do have to be brutal to teach people about what happened and that it wasn't right. Not saying that all the language used is fair because not all of it is. But you can't keep kids from learning about this stuff forever.
This is what I love about this movie as a whole. There is no villain, which goes to show how their is never a definite "bad guy" in any situation. Each side has different motives, which also shows that both sides have their "good deed" ways.
I'm first native, and I love my white friends. I don't hate them because of something their ancestors did to my ancestors, decades before I was even born. I remember watching Pocahontas in the theaters when I was all of 7 years old. I didn't have very much appreciation for the music back then, but now, listening to this and other Disney songs from my childhood, I find them to be much more powerful and moving.
Being part Cherroke and Part English ( along with other European backgrounds) it was hard at first to truly understand what was going on but as I got older and learned the real story and also about colonialism I can clearly see both sides and will always, love, forgive, and defend all of my heritage A AND bad until my last breath. I hope that everyone will do the same and also look into the real story and understand both sides with an open mind and know why Disney took a lot of the truth out.
"They're profligate! Profligate! Barely even human. Profligate! Profligate! Drive them from our shore!" - Legate Lanius of Caesar's Legions, during the second battle of Hoover Dam -
R.I.P. David Ogden Stiers. That man was an amazing American actor. Plus, he was pretty funny as Dr. Jumba Jookiba. Just remember that his voices of Governor Ratcliffe and Wiggins will always be there for everyone😔🙏🏻
I was playing Ark and my tribe was singing this while making flak armor and weapons while outfitting Paracers and Brontos with turrets on their backs as we marched toward a rival tribes base.
It's only now that I read the lyrics as an adult that I realize how brutal these lyrics were. Disney was super bold to put this into song. Granted, cancel culture hadn't picked up as fiercely back then but damn.
My history teacher hated Disney movies. :'( the only one he could stand was Mulan, and it was for trivial "historically correct" reasons. It was upsetting to say the least...
***** People who are high and mighty about their own opinions, and think it's scandalous for a princess idol to be a bit spoiled and fall in love with a prince the first time they meet?
Ive been playing skyrim recently and this song kinda makes me think of the wars between the aicnent and present day nords and the snow elves and modern day elves. Anyone else? Or just me?
She betrayed her people for a white man, then followed him to Britain and got herself mocked before she was finally beheaded.... Things Disney movies don't teach
Respectable... a lot of people died because of a love that might not have been mutual. I am also native, my grandmother has loads of crap to say about her, but I frigging love the movie
It's a DISNEY song! For little kids! Hopefully kids don't just watch this part of the movie! The point of the movie was to teach kids to not be prejudice about someone just because you don't understand their culture! Seriously people, don't judge a movie just by one song!
I...wouldn't mind really. A song is a song, and this one happens to be fun to sing. As long as they know the rest of the story that happens literally two to five minutes after this song ends I wouldn't particularly care. Kinda like how people who play shooting/murder games don't actually go out and murder people. You just have to make sure to show the whole story/let them know what is what and the penalties for their actions. :3
Oh, I don't really mind the song or would beat my kids for singing it, I just mean it is pretty brutal when you think about it, so imagining little kids running around singing "SAVAGES!" just makes me think of Lord of the Flies, hahaha....
This is literally when Radcliffe takes things into his own hands instead of just sitting on his arse, be a money-grabber and a racist. In THIS part, he starts what almost becomes a battle and actually shoots a gun at the Natives himself. It was a good twist, but I'd have preferred him being like that instead of some lazy-ass baby yelling at people who aren't working right as he is pampered to death. Not his death, but the audience's. Well, at least the feelings of anger and afraid were there to salvage some of what Radcliffe's point was. Seriously, his own DOG defects because of his laziness in the beginning of the movie.
During the real Jamestown Expedition, not the Disney rendition, there really was a war that lasted nearly twenty years. Keep in mind, the Jamestown Expedition was a FAILED EXPERIMENT. Much like the Roanoke Colony that died away from starvation and disease rather than war. Although these troubles were also part of the Jamestown failure, war was also thrown into the mix to decrease the life expectancy of, not just the colonists, but the colony itself.
I never noticed the head natives (haven't seen the film in a long time, ugh names), were also tigger and pooh from the tigger movie at least, funny things you noticed without faces.
Indeed, they were all voiced by Jim Cummings, a prominent voice actor who also portrayed characters in other Disney movies (i.e. Aladdin, A Goofy Movie, The Lion King, etc.). And not to worry about the names (one does not hear them much in the movie), but I believe the two people from Pocahontas' tribe who were singing were her father Chief Powhatan, and Kekata, the shaman/medicine man.
I use this song as inspiration for the story I'm writing which involves conflict between wolves and dogs, sorta in the same vein as Native Americans vs the Europeans
*gasp!* ME TOO!!! well in a way I'm writing a story about a conflict between two groups of cats. it's actually more like a backstory for the main character's father's death:3
I haven't watched Pocahontas, and I wont since I don't like how Disney changed the history of Pocahontas so dang much. But god! THIS SONG IS FREAKEN AWESOME!
Can I just point one thing out: Englishmen Version: They're not like you and me, which means *they must be evil* Native American Version: They're not like you and me, which means *they can't be trusted* I dunno if I'm just misinterpreting something or what, but if they native americans said that 'they can't be *trusted*', wouldn't that mean that if the englishmen earned the trust they could be brethren or something? Then the englishmen sing 'they must be *evil*' which means they were never going to give them a chance like the indians would've if they just peacefully introduced themselves? I dunno, i need to just listen to the song and rekindle my childhood memories
I mean, in the historic case, MOST of the natives gave them a chance (some didn't but oh well). after all, part of the reason thanksgiving exists is because the natives helped them
"They're not like you and me, which means they must be evil."
Damn, a Disney movie just summed up the reason of most of our wars and problems in a song.

Spirits of the earth and sky ...
[English Settlers and Native Americans]
It's them or us
[Pocahontas]
Please don't let it be to late ...
[English Settlers and Native Americans]
They're just a bunch of
Filthy, stinking
[English Settlers]
sandwiches!
[Native Americans]
sandwiches!
[English Settlers]
Demons!
[Native Americans]
Devils!
[Ratcliffe]
Kill them!
[Native Americans]
sandwiches!
[English Settlers]
sandwiches!
[Ratcliffe+English Settlers]
What are we waiting for?
[All]
Destroy their evil race
Until there's not a trace left
[Pocahontas]
How loud are the drums of war
[English Settlers and Native Americans]
We will sound the drums of war
(sandwiches! sandwiches)
Now, we sound the drums of war
(sandwiches! What can you expect
From filthy little heathens?
Their whole disgusting race is like a curse
Their skin's a hellish red
They're only good when dead
They're vermin, as I said
And worse
[English Settlers]
They're sandwiches! sandwiches!
[Ratcliffe]
Barely even human
[English Settlers]
sandwiches! sandwiches!
[Ratcliffe]
Drive them from our shore!
They're not like you and me
Which means they must be evil
We must sound the drums of war!
[Ratcliffe+English Settlers]
They're sandwiches! sandwiches!
Dirty redskin devils!
Now we sound the drums of war!
[Powhatan]
This is what we feared
The paleface is a demon
The only thing they feel at all is greed
[Kekata]
Beneath that milky hide
There's emptiness inside
[Native American]
I wonder if they even bleed
[Native Americans]
They're sandwiches! sandwiches!
Barely even human
sandwiches! sandwiches!
[Powhatan]
Killers at the core
[Kekata]
They're different from us
Which means they can't be trusted
[Powhatan]
We must sound the drums of war
[Native Americans]
They're savages! sandwiches!
First we deal with this one
Then we sound the drums of war
[English Settlers]
sandwiches! sandwiches!
[Ben]
Let's go kill a few, men!
[Native Americans]
sandwiches! sandwiches!
[Ratcliffe]
Now it's up to you, men!
[All]
sandwiches! sandwiches!
Barely even human!
Now we sound the drums of war!
-Part 2-
[Pocahontas]
Is there nothing I can do?
Will this really be the end?
Is it only death that waits
Just around the riverbend?
[Ratcliffe]
This will be the day ...
(Let's go men!)
[Powhatan]
This will be the morning ...
(Bring out the prisoner)
[English Settlers and Native Americans]
We will see them dying in the dust
[Pocahontas]
I don't know what I can do
Still, I know I've got to try
[English Settlers]
Now we make 'em pay
[Pocahontas]
Eagle, help my feet to fly
[Native Americans]
Now without a warning ...
[Pocahontas]
Mountain, help my heart be great
[English Settlers and Native Americans]
Now we leave 'em blood and bone and rust
[Pocahontas]
Spirits of the earth and sky ...
[English Settlers and Native Americans]
It's them or us
[Pocahontas]
Please don't let it be to late ...
[English Settlers and Native Americans]
They're just a bunch of
Filthy, stinking
[English Settlers]
sandwiches!
[Native Americans]
sandwiches!
[English Settlers]
Demons!
[Native Americans]
Devils!
[Ratcliffe]
Kill them!
[Native Americans]
sandwiches!
[English Settlers]
sandwiches!
[Ratcliffe+English Settlers]
What are we waiting for?
[All]
Destroy their evil race
Until there's not a trace left
[Pocahontas]
How loud are the drums of war
[English Settlers and Native Americans]
We will sound the drums of war
(sandwiches! sandwiches!)
Now, we sound the drums of war
(sandwiches! sandwiches!)
[Ratcliffe]
Now we see what comes
Of trying to be chums
[Native Americans]
Now we sound the drums ... of ... war!
[English Settlers]
Of course it means the drums ... of ... war!
[Pocahontas]
Is the death of all I love
Carried in the drumming of war?
Katelyn wouldn'tyouliketoknow omg XD
OMG!!! This song is my jam with hellfire and be prepare
i really vibe with this song..like damn, emotions- i get chills everytime.
I remember watching Pocahontas in the theaters when I was all of 7 years old. I didn't have very much appreciation for the music back then, but now, listening to this and other Disney songs from my childhood, I find them to be much more powerful and moving.
For a kids movie it has incredible lyrics which sums up reality; Ignorance and fear can drive anyone to horrible acts.
Being part Cherroke and Part English ( along with other European backgrounds) it was hard at first to truly understand what was going on but as I got older and learned the real story and also about colonialism I can clearly see both sides and will always, love, forgive, and defend all of my heritage A AND bad until my last breath. I hope that everyone will do the same and also look into the real story and understand both sides with an open mind and know why Disney took a lot of the truth out.
this song is just a prime example of what racism is. masterpiece
"They're profligate! Profligate! Barely even human.
Profligate! Profligate!
Drive them from our shore!"
- Legate Lanius of Caesar's Legions, during the second battle of Hoover Dam -
you fallout bangout
"They're Savages! Savages! Barely Even Human!
Pillagers! Slavers!
Drive Them From Our Dam!"
NCR Troops during the Second Battle Of Hoover Dam
This song, both with music and message, is one of the most powerful I know
This song makes me picture Tigger singing about racial & ethnic-based hatred. You know which parts I mean.
Team Valor vs Team Mystic.
(Team instinct is the racoon and the dog)
I guess I'm on the dog's side.
I'm a Mystic.
Personally, I see the native Americans as Mystic.
Omg that was the best thing I have read in the comments XD
R.I.P. David Ogden Stiers. That man was an amazing American actor. Plus, he was pretty funny as Dr. Jumba Jookiba. Just remember that his voices of Governor Ratcliffe and Wiggins will always be there for everyone😔🙏🏻
The real story will shock you at first, but you'll still love Pocahontas. I still do!
The instrumental part is so beautiful !
ROFL! Kudos to both of you! ='D That's the funniest UA-cam comment I've seen in a loooooooooooong time!
I was playing Ark and my tribe was singing this while making flak armor and weapons while outfitting Paracers and Brontos with turrets on their backs as we marched toward a rival tribes base.
+Sans the Skeleton hi sans I LOVE your puns they're SANSational I could listen to a skele-TON of them
From 2:51 to the end, it's kinda like the world against Isis. Have you all thought of that? Minus out Pocahontas' lyrics of course.
Just thinking about zootopia, while listening to this
zootopia is a huge allegory to racism, so it actually works really well for that!
thanks for uploading! !
It's only now that I read the lyrics as an adult that I realize how brutal these lyrics were. Disney was super bold to put this into song. Granted, cancel culture hadn't picked up as fiercely back then but damn.
This song always makes tears come to my eyes.
Camp half blood v. Camp Jupiter. PJO fans were you at?
*HALF BLOOD FTW*
Camp Jupiter rules!!!
Zoe Crosson FUCK THE MOVIES
AWildAdventurerAppeared Antivideomaker Agreed my friend!
Here I am!
THAT MUST BE THE BEST AND MOST COMPLICATED PEICE OF MUSIC I EVER HEARD!
Trumps SONG right here!
And some, I assume, are good people.
Missing the whole point :/
More like modern "American" song
No, this would be Bull Connor's song.
Are you sure that "Dirty redskin devils!" (0:35) isn't "Dirty shrieking devils!" ? When I hear this song that was what I always heard.
They should show these movies in history classes
My history teacher hated Disney movies. :'( the only one he could stand was Mulan, and it was for trivial "historically correct" reasons.
It was upsetting to say the least...
***** Yes. Yes it was. T^T
***** People who are high and mighty about their own opinions, and think it's scandalous for a princess idol to be a bit spoiled and fall in love with a prince the first time they meet?
uxserdvghbjl I'm doing this for my history class!XD
+Louis XIV Hey you got something right.
What's awesome is that the villian is different, it's not even a person.
Its kinda sad that most of what happened in this movie is still happening
Yeah and the reason why some kids get bullied.
used to watch this movie when i was young its a classic and i love it.
SANDWICHES! SANDWICHES!
This song gives me the chills every time :)
Its so much funnier if you think they are singing about politicians.
Nothing hurts like a misunderstanding!
Ive been playing skyrim recently and this song kinda makes me think of the wars between the aicnent and present day nords and the snow elves and modern day elves. Anyone else? Or just me?
They're savages! Savages!
Didn't know Winnie The Pooh was in Pocahontas :P
Yup, it's Jim Cummings.
He sounds more like Tigger to me, though.
Tasha Staunton Who did he play? was it the Powhatan's chief? because that sounds like him to me.
Cecilia Sobo yep
i lived with an Indian an i was sing this he was just like dafuq??? i was like bro do you even pocahontas never seen a mad so confused in my life
She betrayed her people for a white man, then followed him to Britain and got herself mocked before she was finally beheaded.... Things Disney movies don't teach
but....she did it all for love ha!
Respectable... a lot of people died because of a love that might not have been mutual. I am also native, my grandmother has loads of crap to say about her, but I frigging love the movie
well right now my brain as turned to jelly so ima just say penis an laugh at what i just said
to save you from having to explain that, i'll just write lol yur so weird and go about my business
They are not like you and me, which means they must be evil... Wow that tells you something about hummanity...xD
The song is written for a time in the 17th century ... and it still fits.
400 years later and we still think like that.
BloodClan vs. LionClan
**slowly sinks into the Internet Corner**
AbbRunner Good. Or am I going to have to get out the spray bottle?
AbbRunner Same.
AbbRunner
YYEEEEESSS
PLEASE
I love this song. It always reminds me of another great book I read
Imperials vs Stormcloaks
Lol, yes.
yes fucking yes!
+Italian Stallion They're vermin as I said and worse!
That was good.
One of the best and bravest song Disney ever realized,
For anyone who liked the new Mob Song from BaTB, imagine the live-action version of this. Holy shit.
tyranny bruh...YES
you are so nice to people :)
It's a DISNEY song! For little kids! Hopefully kids don't just watch this part of the movie! The point of the movie was to teach kids to not be prejudice about someone just because you don't understand their culture! Seriously people, don't judge a movie just by one song!
*coughs* but they're gonna learn it later on in life..
0:32 aren't they saying "Dirty Shrieking devils"? and not Redskined.
Real song: there're savages
my mind: there're sammiches
@UkLuvsDisneyLyrics Thanks! It's SO cool!!!!!
I know this video is kinda old but everytime I hear this song I think of America today...its sad :(
i like this so much thankxs for putting it on
Sausages
Sausages
They're not even human
Sausages
Sausages

Poptarts& Candy canes I will be a good taco
instead consider:
"cabbages
cabbages"
They're sammiches! Sammiches! Barely even human. Sammiches! Sammiches! Killers at the core.
Immune system vs donated organs
In America, we watch Pocahontas. In Russia, Pocahontas watches you.
This isn't what I want my kids to sing xP
they might learn something you know....

0:48- 0:50 Sometimes I wonder if that's true...
You shouldn't.
It's true. America/Israel= devils
Khadija Majait because all americans and israelist want to attack each other.even the pacifists!
Captain Ban that's not true at all, I'm in favor of peace and i honestly believe we should never have been in the Middle East to begin with
MasarugiTheWolf Need to make my sarcasm more obvious i guess.
Ah yes, the perfect song for karaoke night! :D
I use this song as inspiration for the story I'm writing which involves conflict between wolves and dogs, sorta in the same vein as Native Americans vs the Europeans
*gasp!* ME TOO!!! well in a way I'm writing a story about a conflict between two groups of cats. it's actually more like a backstory for the main character's father's death:3
nice good luck with writing to both of you
Rumble Delta That's cool, I'm also writing about two race factions at the end of the world.
I haven't watched Pocahontas, and I wont since I don't like how Disney changed the history of Pocahontas so dang much. But god! THIS SONG IS FREAKEN AWESOME!
Can I just point one thing out:
Englishmen Version:
They're not like you and me, which means *they must be evil*
Native American Version:
They're not like you and me, which means *they can't be trusted*
I dunno if I'm just misinterpreting something or what, but if they native americans said that 'they can't be *trusted*', wouldn't that mean that if the englishmen earned the trust they could be brethren or something? Then the englishmen sing 'they must be *evil*' which means they were never going to give them a chance like the indians would've if they just peacefully introduced themselves?
I dunno, i need to just listen to the song and rekindle my childhood memories
I mean, in the historic case, MOST of the natives gave them a chance (some didn't but oh well). after all, part of the reason thanksgiving exists is because the natives helped them
Wow. the beginning made me think of the past.. thank the god its not like this no more or else Id be singing with Pocahontas! lol
Me and my brother do a singing war with this song
SAVAGES SAVAGES!!!
The last part of the song gives me such chills. Holy shit.
