- As mass shootings plague the United States, victims’ families continue to search for accountability. To that end, a pair of lawsuits by the families of victims of the Uvalde school shooting will try a new tactic.
J. David Goodman, the Houston bureau chief for The Times, discusses the unusual targets of the lawsuits and profiles the lawyers behind them.
Guest: J. David Goodman (www.nytimes.com/by/j-david-go...) , the Houston bureau chief for The New York Times.
Background reading:
• The Uvalde lawsuits are among the most far-reaching (www.nytimes.com/2024/05/24/us...) to be filed in response to the escalating number of mass shootings in the United States.

So next will they be suing Budweiser for all the thousands of DUI s?, for only one example
Or... All the beer and spirits making companies for that matter.
Alcohol advertising is heavily regulated. They are required to place warnings about impaired driving and forbidden from advertising to children. If they violated those laws, they could be easily sued, yes.
And this will prevent insane people from committing murder how?
No different than Izzy being sued for the suicide of their son who seemed to be playing one of his records at the time. This is nothing new.
Whenever it's about guns, logic leaves the courtroom
This was not an issue when we educated the mentally ill or violent at separate schools
❤❤😅😅😅😅
This is information that can be easily obtained. You’re wrong.
Back then, they had gun clubs in the schools, and everyone brought their guns to school. Not so much fun when your targets can all shoot back.
They’ll lose in court, this is unhinged. Everyone knows the police and the shooter were the most responsible parties to that tragedy.
Yes, but Daniel Defense directly marketed that particular rifle to kids via product placement in Call of Duty. Daniel Defense contacted him, having knowledge of his age and illegal status to purchase a gun. And Instagram allowed firearms marketing videos to reach the underage shooter. The ultimate responsibility for the response on the day may have been the police, but what encouraged and enabled this low income kid to become fixated on and really really want this high priced military styled semiautomatic rifle and ultimately buy it within a half hour of turning 18?
@@WhyTheHorseface if an 18 year old buys a mustang that’s been marketed to him as a kid and wraps himself around a telephone pole, do you think his folks have standing to sue Ford?
@@heymotivator2231 There was a time when such concepts were impossible but this generation thinks men can be woman
There’s no factual or normative causation between the game and the shooting; the lawsuit can’t succeed without those elements.
@@Majorwindy if you listen to the report, the case isn’t about the game causing kids to become shooters. It’s about the arms manufacturer, Daniel Defense, paying Activision to place their products in the game to market to gamers, who are often underage kids. The case is about marketing death to kids. Just like cigarette companies were banned from using cartoon characters and making commercials because they would reach children. Also, once the “soon-to-be-shooter” was really interested in the gun after seeing it and playing with it in game, he sought out info about the REAL rifle on Daniel Defense’s website, and then DD contacted him about purchasing, knowing he was underage. The case is about marketing. And it’s pretty open and shut, based on precedent of tobacco companies and similar marketing tactics.
The famous "guns don't kill people video games do" argument
What is a video game?
@@gefiltefist2088a video game is an online or single player game played on a screen. Examples are: computers, televisions or consoles. Any game that can be played on those are considered “video games”. I know this might be a joke comment but there’s an explanation.
its just way too texan lol...i'm rolling on the floor over this one.
As a video game developer, this lawsuit is outrageous. There are soo many shooting games

@@WhyTheHorseface In the report, the interviewee states that the attorney names, Remington and the company that owns call of duty.
Remember when Mortal Kombat was going to cause decapitation?
So stupid 😂
Not sure which is more Ghey the lawsuit or the NYT
I wonder where the parents and grandparents stand in this trial. Will they be prosecuted as well? It only seems fair since we get most of our "education" at home.
In media parlance, 'accountability' means taking away the constitutional rights of others.
Where does it say 'video game' in the Constitution?
@@jeremy____5747 In the amendment right before the other right they've been attacking.
@@dimitrioskantakouzinos8590 No, I'm afraid juvenile flippancy is an inappropriate response. You are called upon to give an adequate response here.
@@jeremy____5747 I'm sure you understood. First amendment.
@@dimitrioskantakouzinos8590 It does not say 'video game' in the First Amendment.
This just show their IQ.. No offense, but If you guys think that "Video Game" did that such a thing, "Gamers" will do that in middle east at first place.
ISIS videos regularly copied 'Victory' screens from Call of Duty.
Video games cause violence.
I am a Reagan Republican that has not voted Republican since John McCain ran for President.
I despise Maga, period, full stop.
This legal argument is absolutely bat shit crazy. It is beyond words for me to explain how assine I believe this lawsuit is.
I dont even own a firearm, but I enjoy the possibility I may have the legal right to eventually own one.
I even have a pistol permit for now 10+ years and yet,
I haven't purchased a handgun.
It is absolutely infuriating that my first Republican vote may need to be for a man I would not allow to tie my shoes.
Did you listen to the report? Do you know that Reagan said “There is absolutely no reason why out on the street today a civilian should be carrying a loaded weapon" before he signed legislation outlawing such in the state of California?
@@WhyTheHorseface ok, so when did he say that and what was the context??
Frankly, what does a statement from Ronald Reagan have to do with firearm legislation 40 years later?? Btw. Ronald Reagan was a lifetime member of the NRA
@@bernardzsikla5640 what does a statement from Ronald Reagan have to do with your comment when you begin by calling yourself a Reagan Republican? As a Reagan Republican you’d think you agree with the man, who made that statement just before signing The Mulford Act, a gun law in California banning carrying loaded weapons. The law was also supported by the NRA. Wait… you don’t like that the statement was made decades ago? When was the 2nd Amendment ratified?
@@WhyTheHorseface because of context. It's your premise that because Ronald Reagan made a statement 40 years regarding a particular gun control legislation that Reagan would agree or disagree with the current legislative attempt at gun control. Obviously, Reagan did not always agree with the NRA yet he was a lifelong member.
Ronald Reagan was first and foremost a leader that completely supported the constitution, especially the 2nd ammendment and he also believed that with every right there is a equal responsibility to society.
If you have an significant point, this is your time to shine.
@@bernardzsikla5640I don’t see this lawsuit as necessarily coming from one party or the other. I’d still stick with someone who can tie your laces.
Dylan and Klebold had played hundreds of hours of the arcade game "Time Crisis" where you shoot a light gun at human figures. An Army marksmanship instructors during the inquiry said his own trainees were not as efficient as hitting their targets as those two were.
Video games cause violence.
So one instructor makes a claim and that’s it for you huh?
People choose violence. You’re ignorant.
Whom would you suggest would know more about marksmanship than a military instructor?

I loved Centipede yet can't even kill a spider. What does that say. No connection. More proof? There are video games in which we can screw animated women yet I have no interest in playing. No connection lol. Fantasy and reality only mix in the psychotic.
