      CE-5*

  • @jeshely
    @jeshely 3 роки тому +122

    For the CE-5 you need to have the Filter all the way up to be an equal comparison. The filter control is a passive one that affects how much of the chorus applied is CUT OFF for each frequency range. By having it at 12 you are cutting by roughly half the chorus effect on each spectrum.

    • @Danthehorse
      @Danthehorse 3 роки тому +1

      Is that true for the ch1 too?

    • @jeshely
      @jeshely 3 роки тому +10

      @@Danthehorse No. The CH-1 does not have independent filter controls for the chorused effect based off frequency ranges. The eq control on the CH-1 is just a tone control for the repeats however the chorus is applied across the spectrum.

    As a massive CE5 and Super Chorus I think you unfairly dismissed the CE5 by not having the filters off! Which means having them both opened and turned up to the max.
    It makes a a massive difference to it’s openness compared to the others. Especially in a live gigging setting.
    Great comparison apart from that small gripe.

      @@squirelova1815 Definitely, I played in a band using heavy drive plus chorus pretty much always on, and the CE-5 EQ was perfect for killing the low end in the wet signal and just adding some color on the highs. Thanks. You've accomplished more in 15 minutes than the British pedal guys can do in a hour. I would have liked to hear these with a less bright twangy tone also. Stereo makes a big difference, but the biggest difference IMO is what people expect from a chorus. Do they just want a fuller sound, or do they want to sound out of tune? Two different things. I use the CE-2 for mild chorus, the Arion Stereo Chorus for Mike Landau sounds and the MXR for sickly de-tuned Hiram Bullock sounds. And none of them do what the Dimension C does which is almost in Strymon territory.

      With the cut knobs on flat, it sounds like the super chorus... it just gives you more control. The CE-2w "CE for Chorus Ensemble" is basically just the original Chorus Ensemble and the CE-2 in one box in stereo. I do like the way it sounds a bit better. It has a bit more warmth, but the CE-5 is better than the CH-1 imo.

    Properly used the CE-5 beats any chorus pedal and most rack systems that you stack against it. This video had it filtered down to half its potential because of the settings and it still sounded the best. It's so lush and clear and by far the best chorus pedal ever made for handling distortion.

      This pedal is a Chameleon and I know what I'm saying since I have it for 14 years now. It stays very clear and defined with distortion... Gave me instant "Somewhere in time tone" with a bit of delay, but you can also use it more subtly to color some solos without being too evident or 80's. On clean it can gets pretty lush as well, even though not the best ever. I also have ce2, ce3, cs9, csl, cs505, sc10 and cs5 because I'm a chorus junkie...and the ce5 is still my go to.

    UPDATE: I just saw that the manual of the CE-2w says the same thing as the CH-1 and the CE-5 on the stereo option: one side gives you the clean guitar, the other one the wet signal. For some reason I couldn't hear that when doing this shootout (and didn't check the manual)! Sorry for that!
    But what I said still stands, the DC-2w Dimension Chorus is the ONLY true stereo pedal in this shootout!

    I have the Dimension C. I hated it at first, thought it took away too much of my dry signal... Until... I plugged it in stereo! I really think it comes alive in stereo. I have a drastic stereo setup, 2 amps, one tube, one transistor, one on each side of my room, and you can feel the effect move around the air. Really awesome. Now thanks to that pedal I've become obsessed with stereo... Not good for my wallet.

    I am in agreement with some of the other comments regarding the unfair comparison with the CE-5's filters being set at only half way. With both filter knobs turned clockwise past 12:00, you get a stronger sounding chorus. The CE-5 has 2 filter knobs that can be adjusted separately. The CH-1 only has 1 EQ knob. This is the reason why I purchased the CE-5 instead of the CH-1.

      The eq on the CE-5 was not set up correctly to be a fair comparison with the other pedals. Cutting the highs and lows is naturally going to impact the tone. Also as some other people mentioned, the older analog CE-5 pedals sound better than the digital versions:
      "There are 2 versions of the CE-5 where the second version is denoted CE-5A. This is printed on the PCB so it is easy to figure out which version you have. The first version is closely related to the CE-2 and CE-3. It uses the 1024 stage Panasonic BBD MN3007 and its associated clock driver 3101. The CE-5A is completely restructured. It uses surface mounted components and the BBD has been replaced with a digital design. All CE-5s made before October 2001 will have the old analog BBD circuit. The easiest way to determine which version you have is to use the serial number. If the second letter/first number combination is earlier than P1, you have the analog type. This also mean that all digital CE-5s will have a dark gray label."

    As a traditional chorus, it has to be the CE2W in CE1 mode. Watched hundreds of demos, owned multiple chorus pedals, nothing comes close to it in my opinion. That said... ...I’m really blown away by how unique the Dimension C sounds, it’s almost got a flanger like quality to it. I think I’ll end up getting both at some point lol. The CE-2 has the same stereo effect as the CE-2 and CH-1, that being one side dry and one wet. It just has a better sound overall though. The DC-2 has multiple "effected" signals being combined together meaning it's doesn't have just a dry and wet, but a dry, wet 1, wet 2, etc signal paths that get recombined in mono. In stereo I think it has effected signals on both sides, at least 2 per side, which is why it has such a good stereo sound. But they all sound good to me, I just like the CE-2 and DC 2 more.

Despite the lack of true stereo, I find that having the direct signal and the effected signal output in stereo sounds glorious. CE-5 is thin and lifeless. I would love to play around with the CE-2w a bit more. I would also love to compare a vintage CE-2, although I would probably still prefer a stereo rather than mono pedal for recording. Great video, thanks.

    I adore my Waza dimension ... so much so that I think I'm going to get the CE-2w also for a different flavour ... I'm using these on synths and I might try running the chorus in mono on my desk and then into the dimension strapped across a subgroup (how I have it set up) to see how that sounds as well! Really good demo, very well done - best comparison I've seen yet, and I've seen a few ;). Thanks man - appreciate the time and effort :)

    CH-1 & CE-5 were always Weak. The 2 Waza Pedals are much Better pedals. I personally Do Not Like the SeaSick pitch-wavering. Getting the DC-2W for my Acoustic pedalboard. Moral of the story: More Knobs do not necessarily guarantee Better Sound. The DC-2W is the one I bought. Love it. Nice fair demo. Enjoyed it.

      Michael Caz I certainly miss feeling inspired and I’ve never lost my love of music. It has more to do with my current setting, time, and the fact that I do not have my collaborating partner. I only do my best with him. I can and have experimented with a fair amount of unfinished stuff that I had written at the time (we had roughly an album and a half’s worth of material) and been pleased with the results, but it doesn’t have the same feeling. It used to be when I’d get off work and go over there, we would get everything setup and rehearse for hours upon hours. All weekend, almost non-stop. And there was always a rush I’d get from playing and how much better we were improving, and that translated over into the music we made. Trying to create without that feeling doesn’t...have the same meaning. If that makes any sense at all. And that was our litmus test for the music: if it didn’t create that surge, if it didn’t “light up” and give that rush, or strike something in a genuine way, it didn’t get used. And now I’m stuck that way after all this time. So it’s a bit difficult for me to play for any reasons beyond doing it for the same reasons a person might look at an old photograph.

    I had the purple one but it didn’t jive with the rest of my setup so I didn’t keep it. It would have been perfect if it had a volume control because I loved how it sounded. Currently back to using the MXR analog chorus pedal and I just run it through my true bypass loop pedal so it’s true bypass when it’s off. No tone suck issues and I love how versatile it is with the high low cut knobs. I’m happy with MXR but Boss makes great stuff too. I will try a CE-2W someday for sure.
    Thanks for this comparison demo. Excellent job 👍🏻

    I used the heck out of my original CE-2 pedal back in the 80s, and am now interested in reconnecting with this effect - so I wasn't sure what all the differences are. Thank you for this comparison. I agree with your conclusions. I do agree that the DC-2w would be even better if it had more control pots to manually adjust the parameters - why they didn't do that is odd.
    Because there are many companies now offering even more elaborate versions of chorus (with several new features, including dynamic expression on the Seymour Duncan Catalina chorus, which allows one to increase or decrease the amount of effect depending on intensity of picking), that is my next question: do those new versions of chorus add anything important?

      2 years later - sold CH1 to get an analogue CE-5. There are many videos on the pre 2001 analogue CE-5 and more latest digital CE-5. I picked from ebay for 50 quid and for me it blew the CH1 away.
      Also note the comment by Jesus Mercado below. I keep the treble knob at 1 o clock and the bass full way up at 5 o clock - works well for my guitar / amp settings with warmth -
      the ce-5 handles distortion extremely well (CH1 didnt)
      Thinking about Dimension now ---- but definitely keeping the analogue CE-5.
      There still isnt any comparable chorus pedal video to this excellent one even two years later !

    Correction: The CE-2W DOES do the 'shitty fake stereo'. Consult the manual, unfortunately output B is just a direct output signal :( Really wish there was a work around for it because it does sound very nice. The Dimension is more subtle but does sound almost as nice to my ear, just need a bit more depth and it would be perfect!

    i think the volume drop you’re referring to in the dimension c is a slight low frequency cut like how the CE2W cuts some high end sparkle. that low end goes a long way, so losing the bottom would definitely seem like a volume cut/loss. that’s just what i’ve noticed from owning both for awhile now. i had the dimension c waza and super chorus on my board for A WHILE but decided to ditch my
    big board and try a small set up and keeping the dimension c as my soul chorus. it’s sad though, i miss my super chorus, using the dimension c and super chorus together is more heavenly than you can imagine

    I Own ce2w and DC2w, the problem with DC2w is its harshness. It really lacks on warmness. AND, there is another issue with DC2w: if you are using a stereo setup with a stereo reverb at the end, the phase settings of the DC2w channels are not outcoming so that the stereo separation is still valid. The stereo separation is lowered in fact. As a result, I cannot use the DC2w unless it is the last stereo pedal in the chain.

    • @joemanganese
      @joemanganese 2 роки тому

      @@owengonzales53 Most chorus pedals use phase inversion in stereo and in such case it can be a tragedy when they go into a reverb. A reverb in stereo input is summing 1 and 2 signals, then creates the effect, and outputs in stereo on outputs 1 and 2 together with the original signal from input 1 and 2. So the reverb itself will not contain a chorus because summing a phase inverted signal will mute it, almost. If you want a stereo chorus that will always work with reverbs, eventide micropitch is ok. It is a detuner, but better than a chorus in stereo.

    I quite like the old analog CH-1, it's nice and dark as you mentioned, but my faves are CE-2, Arion SCH-1, and for stereo, my Maxon ASC-10. I believe it's true stereo, not wet/dry but could just be a dual/phase inversion like the CE-2W. .
    The Joyo Analog Chorus is also one of my faves, price be damned.I think it's based on an older Maxon (which was, in turn, based on the CE-2). Cheap doesn't automatically equal bad. The Mooer you mentioned is cool.
    If I had the $$, maybe CE-2W and/or DC-2W. I'd grab a cheap, used CH-1 for sure. But I'd rather keep my old MIT CE-2, the Arion, and the Maxon and have a few options (I'd probably have to sell all of those just to afford a CE-2W). MXR Stereo Chorus is pretty awesome as well.
    The best digital Chorus is the Source Audio Gemini.
