  • Concerned about the viewing format ratio? Here is the link to the original theatrical aspect ratio version of this clip: • Eleanor Powell - Dance... . It had to be shortened, however, due to current copyright restrictions by Warner Entertainment. I've had the original 4:3 aspect ratio full version posted for public consumption for quite some time now but it is currently 'Blocked' from viewing. This can change, however, so hopefully, Warner will release it for full viewing at some point. If and when that happens, it will automatically be made for viewing to the public. Thank you for your patience!
    But in the meantime, please enjoy the full 'Dance Finale' clip you are viewing right now! Sorry for the format discrepancy, however. Just know that if you are one who does not like this format for viewing, your voice HAS already been heard here as you can read in some of the comments below. Therefore, knowing this and the reasons for which the original format is being withheld from public view at the present time, there is no need to belabor that point any longer. So I would ask that you please refrain from showing your displeasure any longer in the comment section below to be more considerate to those around you who enjoy viewing it regardless of its format. Thank you for your cooperation!

      Thank you and could not agree with you more. And how truly special to hear that you knew Ms Powell and have had those wonderful memories to carry with you. How lovely and so special. And then to hear you affectionately refer to her as 'Ellie' and then so eloquently follow that up with words like, 'special' and 'unique'. It underscores perfectly just how cherished this relationship was to you. Are there really enough words to describe her? Not sure and would have loved to have known her. A 'special' lady indeed. Thank you so much for sharing that with us.

      Wow, I noticed she appears much stouter than in other films, and the distortion could easily be taken for her natural appearance; it's amazing how the widening exactly mimics the real variations in women's physiques, as if you could just widen a thin woman into a more curvy one.

    What a complete exquisite dancer from ballet, tap and acrobatics, she was so good at it all. She could put so many difficult moves together, high kicks, walkovers, fast spins and could tap like a machine gun, all with perfect time with the music. And she was lovely to look at besides.

    Her dancing defies the laws of physics, the laws of the natural world! I keep rewatching this performance. It is fascinating because Ms. Powell’s innate talent so beautifully mocks the dense and heavy world the rest of we mere mortals have the audacity to occupy. Ms. Powell lived in a weightless world, frictionless, gravity-free. We are blessed that she decided to descend to our weighted world to remind us that there has not been one single other dancer that could exist next to her in that rarified air Ms. Powell so naturally glides, slides and defies in. In our TikTok age where just giggling around earns millions of viewers, this new disdainful generation should learn our history and understand that Ms. Powell is in a class of her own unlike the viral video with some boring old father who steps from side to side and thereby amuses the masses. Ms. Powell: thank you sharing your colossal talent with us and thank you for the clear reminder of what artistry once graced cinema.

Incidentally, I now have the out-of-print official Warner Home Video DVD of this movie fully restored, along with another movie she did in 1941, "Lady Be Good", and will eventually get around to posting some clips. Some folks do not like the format I chose (on purpose) to present this clip you see here of her dance finale in "Born to Dance" so I will post it from this DVD in its native format as well. Please. Nicholas Brothers would literally dance circles around Eleanor and Fred Astaire to boot. I enjoyed this clip very much- those spins at the end were ridiculously good. But don't get it twisted, she was not better than the majority of black tap dancers during that time who were taking rhythm and athleticism to soaring, mind blowing heights. I see her dancing as a little stiff and restrained for my taste. I hate to go here, but go here I must. Funny, that when a white person does a really good job at something that is dominated by blacks, they immediately become the best of all time! I'm just saying......

    The improvement in sound recording, lighting and cinematography between the first wave of canned Broadway shows in 1929-30 and this is phenomenal. The Golden Age was a powerhouse technically as well as creatively.
    Did ever a Hollywood newcomer get such a launch? Even the holes in the gun barrels are star-shaped.

    This NEVER gets old the more I see Born to Dance. That last scene with Eleanor Powell dancing to Swingin' the Jinx Away is a true classic example of elite dancing in a film musical that withstands the test of time. Besides E.P., a young emerging Jimmy Stewart did a masterful job of singing and dancing in one of his early movies here. I guess he had a hidden talent, or two, of sorts.

    • @jackanthony976
      @jackanthony976 8 років тому +2

      This last number of Eleanor Powell, Swingin' the Jinx Away" was reinserted into Eleanor Powell's last starring role at MGM in a musical film called "I Dood It." That was 7 years after this. However when MGM reinserted this number seven years later into "I Dood It" they jazzed up the music and it seems that Eleanor redubbed her taps into the later version making them even more crystal clear. I have to say I like what they did with the reinsertion of this number into the later film. However I do think it highly unusual that a studio would take a number from an earlier film and incorporate into another film seven years later. Perhaps MGM thought the movie audiences wouldn't remember this number from seven years earlier.

    • @Celluloidwatcher
      @Celluloidwatcher 8 років тому +2

      Yes, I did see "I Dood It," and was surprised that the Swingin' the Jinx Away number was used in that film, as well. You have a good point, there. So many films were made in Hollywood in those days that it was all about moving to the next project so that everything was contemporary If the studios wanted to incorporate scenes from past movies to fill some time, they would do it if they couldn't find the right actors or would cut costs when filming, whatever the circumstances.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 4 роки тому

      @@Celluloidwatcher
      If the studio felt it could wrap up the last picture of a star who wanted out by recycling a number, the choice probably fell on 'Swingin' the Jinx Away' because it was from eight years earlier- loooong ago in the memory of audiences before video- and because it was full of uniforms and marching. That fit the patriotic mood of 1943, when 'I Dood It' was released.

    At the 1:35 mark, if you listen to it on a good sound system with a sub woofer, it sounds like she is right there in the room tap dancing on your floors! Amazing sound capture from the sound engineers in that day. I have always been spellbound at how clear her tap sounds are in this movie. Wonderful, masterful job of sound editing by the folks at MGM.

      I am not certain about her tapping here, but Astaire used Hermes Pan to recreate the tap noises. I imagine it is a Foley effect.

    • @njital13
      @njital13 8 років тому +4

      The answer to the good tapping noise is ....They had to do the same routine in front of of about 10-15 speakers along the floor. Thats how they got the tapping so clearly. Sometimes they didn't wear taps on their shoes when they danced on screen. It was edited in later. I saw an old interview with Ann Miller and Eleanor Powell and they said thats how it was done.

      Although TV had been invented by the 1930's, hardy anyone owned a TV nor were there any lavish productions on TV at that time. In fact, in the 1930's the TV was dark most of the day and night except for a few shows here and there. It was unusual if you knew anyone who owned a TV.

    She is the one female partner that Fred Astaire didn't want to dance with inmovies on a regular basis. Not because she wasn't up to his standards, but because she was at least his equal in talent, and feared she would take attention away from him during dance numbers. Watch their tap-dance number on YT. Just as fluid, relaxed and precise as Astaire. Too bad, what a team they would have made.

    A mystery of the Golden Age and the system that fueled it: How did a woman of 23, with one supporting part and one novelty spot in pictures behind her, choreograph and star in the most expensive musical yet made... and why did those male-chauvinist control freaks, Louis B Mayer and Irving Thalberg, trust her to deliver?
    All I can say is that such daring deserved payoff and they got it: not only in box office but in the gratitude of millions unborn in 1936 who marvel at Eleanor Powell.

    No wonder Fred Astaire called her the greatest dancer in the world! Certainly in the years of the “hoofers” Ruby Keeler, Joan Crawford, etc, her style was an eye-opening contrast. So light on her feet and such agility and sharp tapping all go down to skill and hours of dedicated practising. It certainly paid off for her. Wonderful entertainer!

    Just wanted to say how much I appreciate you watching this classic video and making it one of our top classic movie videos we have posted on this channel. Friends, a lot (and I mean A LOT!) has happened since we posted this. As some of you may know, The Vinyl Restoration Channel has now morphed into a professional audio post-production studio, LegacyVMP Studio. And there is so much work to do concerning our beloved and treasured legacy audio recordings. Let me explain.
    Folks, are you aware that there exist many, many legacy artists that unfortunately, the digital age of music has NOT been so kind? For example, one of them is Pop/Country artist, B. J. Thomas. So my studio, LegacyVMP Studio, is on a mission to try and help do our part to change this kind of business climate within the legacy audio industry that we feel is long overdue. I think the time is right for studios like mine (and others!) to take what technology now affords us and turn it into something that can be very positive for the industry as a whole. Will you help us do that?
    Here are some of our more recent restorations to help illustrate what I am talking about. I want to stress with these: 1.) the power of recent advances in audio restoration technology in particular to allow studios like mine to do what we do! 2.) I want you to hear just how far our sound has come (maturity-wise) since we began this channel in the fall of 2014. First, here is one from Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 that you might recognize 🙂:ua-cam.com/video/X7omaR4gS_A/v-deo.html. In addition, here is one or two (or three or four 🙂) from B. J. Thomas: (ua-cam.com/video/RLjsKECP3lk/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/5yLgrE7-B-0/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/BFI8yBcX0qE/v-deo.html, and ua-cam.com/video/ABPOzijuam4/v-deo.html). Thanks for listening!
    We are now a professional studio, LegacyVMP Studio ( facebook.com/legacyvmpstudio) and we need your help spreading the word about what we do! Please visit our Business page and "Like/Follow Us". Thanks so much again and stay safe.

      Nick Hentschel, this film was never filmed in Technicolor. In fact, three-strip technicolor was still a new idea in 1936. Technicolor just was not used as often. It was more expensive, and the lighting and heat was more intense. As years passed, Technicolor use was more frequent, and advances in its use diminished the intense lighting and heat drama. I recommend that you watch Becky Sharp 1935. It is noted as the first picture filmed with the perfected three-strip Technicolor. You will see how vivid the colors are in a good print.
