That was a mag lite solitaire wasn't it? The mini was 2 cells
You're quite right. The Maglite with its brighter xenon bulb which was so compact you could carry a spare in the flashlight and its focusing ability (not to mention its precise tooling) was a tremendous advance over the (then) standard torch technology. In those days LEDs had just come into common household use in handheld calculator displays which were almost impossible to read in the sunlight. They were far too weak for any sort of illumination. Now we are even using them in auto headlights. Maglite has LED conversions for some of their models, I don't know if they exist for the mini.
