fun fact- when arnold schwarzenegger got a look at the humvee he fell in love with it and asked the military (there were no civilian version at the time) if he can have one. they at first denied the request but granted it later and thus the terminator himself got a military made humvee. dunno if he still has it, but i do know he has the tank he trained in when he was in the austrian army.

The Landy was developed by two chaps who while holidaying in Wales were driving an old Jeep. It was knackered. They decided they could fix it but realised they were British. This means they could build a car from scratch and build it better. So that's what they did, they drew a car in the sand on that Welsh beach. That's how we got the Landy.

There was also later a civilian version of the Kubelwagen. The Volkswagen Type-181 aka the "Thing" produced from 1973-1974. There were also a few military versions of what would later become the "Beetle" (then known as the "KDF") some of of which had 4wd variants.

The JLTV is also a big step in the Warfighter Information Network - Tactical (WIN-T) upgrades the army has been working on for years now. An army is most vulnerable when standing still, so the goal is to make it entirely mobile.
Wired communication is the fastest (especially fiber optic), but completely immobile and vulnerable to cutting or splicing (and yes, fiber CAN be spliced even though it's glass). Line of sight is limited by the curvature of the earth to roughly 30mi at best. Radio has limited range and is interfered with by terrain and weather. Range can be increased by reducing mobility. Tropo is cool but doesn't work. Satcom is functional everywhere but is expensive and has high latency due to having to send information to space and back as well as being stationary to maintain a lock on the bird.
What they're doing with the JLTV is they're developing communications drones to recieve and transmit satellite communications without having to send it to space, drastically reducing latency and, if they've been able to solve the tracking issue, making comms completely mobile by putting satcom operators behind the commander's seat in every JLTV unit

yeah, he missed some pretty crucial vehicles to the topic. the ba-64 and the Leichter Panzerspähwagen
being a couple really important ones.

You forget the Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmwagen, a 4x4 Amphibien Car of the WW2.

The Humvee is still around. It's just that it was never meant to be a combat vehicle - it was meant to be a light all-terrain truck, and it does that job just fine. The JLTV is meant for a different role, that of a light combat vehicle.

JLTV is actually unliked by the troops, at least the ones I've talked to. There's a very good chance it might just be a stop gap until a real replacement can be found.

My favorite vehicle I've ever been in, and worked out of was the Panhard VBL, and nobody talks about it. Nobody's even heard of it, but it's just about perfect in this role. The goddamned French had a better light armored vehicle (Basically what VBL stands for) in the 70s, with mine/shell fragment resistance, NBC protection, and it's drive in/drive out Amphibious. Before the US wasted so much time, and money on the HMMWV.
