- A narrated propaganda film presenting the life of Marine Corsair fighter pilots of VMF-213 deployed in the South Pacific during 1943.
It offers a glimpse of the life of pilots, mechanics and ground crews as they maintain and fly their machines, while also going about their daily lives on the Russell Islands (central Solomon Islands) during World War II.
Marine aviators featured in this film are George Defabio [De Fabio], Mr. Greg, Mr. Thomas, Mr. Garrison, Mr. Leary, Mr. McCleary, Mr. Votaw, and Mr. Winnia.
So much vintage cheese in that narration. That in itself is a historical artifact as much as the footage is.
For sure
It's awesome!

Aaah , Another great Video !
Great stuff. Gotta love the old time propaganda.
Sadly according to google, George "Fab" Defabio was killed in action over Okinawa on Friday, April 13, 1945 :(
My uncle, Capt. John L (Luther) Morgan was KIA 28MAR45, over Okinawa. VMF213
I've had some Marines say to me that they are the butt end of the US military establishment, having to make do with the handmedowns of the Navy, but they are still the only Marine force in the world with their own airforce. You don't see the Royal Marines or the Dutch Marines so lucky to have any organic support bigger then a mortar team.
That gun camera footage of the head on attack on the D3A "Val" at 6:21 is just crazy. Never seen that one before
Yeah, all those "zeros" shown in various places with fixed landing gear ...
They often flew weakened by dysentery and malaria, exhausted from lack of sleep in the hot and humid environment.
