First of all, great run down of the Airfix 2023 catalogue, Matt. Glad to see that you are still making this a yearly tradition. I’m keen to get my hands of the Series 1 Land Rover, Auster Antarctic, Ferret Scout Car. But the biggest surprise is the re-release of the SS Great Western by Airfix. Think about it how often do you see a major scale modelling company issue a kit, of a Steam Paddle with sails Ship. I’m very keen to get my hands on that one. But I’m very curious to see you get your hands the Airfix SS Great Western. And well make a slice of Victorian History in miniature.
I'm not sure I can stretch to the Great Western at the moment, given the increasing size of my stash lol! I did think about not creating this video seeing as Airfix did such a good job of their own video (i think maybe they saw my videos previously and borrowed elements to improve theirs lol) but I thought that many see it as a "tradition" and value my thoughts and little bits of extra info so put a few hours work in to create it :D

Great review. I'm no Airfix fan but there's some great stuff here. The Ferret is a must as is the Great Western. The Bond Bug will upset the ebay scalpers for sure, it's still dear for what it is though. Great to see some larger scales like the Gannet in 1/48. London bus looks like a fun build. Almost too much temptation to resist here.
For myself Airfix have really outdone themselves here... personally my choices for the kit candidates for a purchase this year are the Buccaneer S.2B (Gulf War), Harrier GR.1, Phantom FGR.2 and maybe the Gnat T.1 as the recent build I did of the Yellowjack scheme I'm giving to a friend.. The kits I can only dream about having as I'm limited in room space is the Fairey Rotodyne, Fairey Gannet and the 1/48 Buccaneer S.2B... and one I can definitely dream of building and having is the 1/24 Ju-87B-2... that's an impressive model once done as at the Kent Battle of Britain Museum where I volunteer at has many examples of the Stuka kit there. Airfix... massive pat on the back for the range this year! 🥳Also Matt great video for showing off the new model lineup! 😁
Despite the fact they're Quick Build models, I do like the taxi and the bus and hope that one day they'll be brave enough to make them into full fledged kits. The 43rd scale cars, especially the Land Rover, are also impressive, and the artwork on the aircraft kits is absolutely beautiful!

Great (p)review as always Matt. Some really cool new toolings and re-issues. I think the 617 gift set represents great value given the respective price of each individual kit.
I am really interested in the Gloster meteor, bond bug and the bloodhound missile. The latter two being vintage classics, I love building these as it reminds me of making them when I was a kid, plus I enjoy the challenge of making a presentable model from an old tooling
I’ll definitely get the Gannet and I might do the Me110 and Buccaneer in Gulf War colours if I see them in my local shop. I think the F35B will prove to be disappointing given the low part count. I was hoping for a helicopter, Jaguar or Gripen in new tools. Sadly not. No ships either! I guess the vintage classics mob will be happy. Not so much the new tool tarts! I’m happy. Gannet is a great pick, and some interesting reboxes.
Quite a nice selection here, but I am always dismayed by the tiny scale of the car kits. While I'd absolutely love the Bond Bug (I had the chance to drive a real one back in the 70s) as well as the Aston Martin DB5, I like my cars in 1:24 scale. Seriously if anyone releases a 1:24 Bond Bug and/or DB5 then I'm ordering right away. The other one that caught my eye was the 1:72 Fairey Rotodyne/ I always wanted this kit when I was a kid but never bought it, so I'm pretty sure I'll be building this one when it becomes available
Wow! Stuka has gone up in price a bit since it first came out in 1975. I remember it being excellent, and a very easy build... for something like £6, but over £90 (much more than the 10x price that inflation would make it today), makes it much the same price as kits of the same scale that are not from 50 years old moulds. I suppose it depends whether you think having the 2 crewmembers makes the price worth it.
Apparently (According to the bank of england inflation calculator) £6 in 1975 adjusted for inflation is now £42.74, but in conversation with someone who has access to a 1978 catalogue they found it listed there for £7.99. Whilst it may be evident that the price of this kit has increased at the initial release, as with most things, the price may reduce to a more acceptable level as is quite standard practice for many companies
They did okay The lack of newly tooled 1/72 kits padded out with rereleases is a bit of a worrying trend. Not all of us have the budget to splash out 50 quid for a kit nor the space to display them. I'm liking the 1/43 cars though. Overall a mixed bag for me. On the one hand I won't be getting any aeroplanes which is good, but will be getting the cars, which is bad. Was hoping to see nothing I would want because I literally don't have any space for more kits in the stash lol
Good to see Airfix going strong another year. Now with the 48 Gannet in sight, perhaps some day we'll get to see a nice 72 injection Gannet and finally finish the Ark's 70s air wing...
Pretty good lineup I think. Definitely going to pick up the Bf-110. That being said, and I don't know if this is just me, but I was somewhat disappointed by the new box designs which do not show the schemes. I couldn't see any of them on the website but they showed off some in their UA-cam, which is a relief. Just my two cents.
The Ferret looks really nice (how about some contemporary figures, Airfix?), but that's about it for me, although the Bloodhound missile might make an interesting nostalgia build.
Yep, some great new ones, and even older ones for me. FE2A for instance, Bloodhound just for nostalgia, and the 24th Stuka looks tempting, but where am I going to put it? (Polite answers only please 😂).
Some really lovely stuff in 1/72 that I want to have a go at! Def gonna get the WWI biplane set, The PR mosquito probably the Brewster and the Postwar Tempest if I can get some treat money together!
Great overview, but I am a bit underwhelmed by this years releases. 9 new kits, only 2 new aircraft. Most of the rest are existing kits with different decals....
Nice. Little disappointed at the lack of new tool aircraft, but that is quickly overshadowed by the gannet, rotodyne, auster, bond bug, bristol/fokker, and raf 48 buc for me!
A few good looking models there. I might just get one or two. The rotadyne looks interesting, although it's not my usual thing, the bloodhound has a few memories for me so I might get that. And I can rarely resist an early jet so the meteor, vampire, hunter etc are all pretty tempting. Still not much in the way of ships though.
Yeah, ships aren't really Airfix's strong subject at the moment, but then I guess they can't release everything all the time because then they wouldn't sell
1/43 is an odd scale for injection moulded plastic kits, it's really a much more scale common for die cast models. 1/32 or even 1/48 may have been more appropriate in plastic. I don't think many people would mix solid heavy metal models with less robust glued together plastic kits, but you never know🤷♂
@@DavidLee-df888 I think that there will be 2 kinds of people that get these kits, those who want them to go with their trains, and those who just want to build them for what they are lol
I asked about the Hurricane MkII/IV when i was in Margate last year (as it was my first ever kit) and I saw the tooling for it in the warehouse - sadly the response was "i can't say" when I asked if it was coming back in the vintage classics range . . .
Some good stuff there! Interesting that the artwork for the Hawker Hunter shows the 'Tower Bridge incident': en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_Hunter_Tower_Bridge_incident Thank you for putting this together!
I don't know this for certain but these are the reasons I think could contribute to that price: The Spitfire was designed to fit inside a certain sized box, which makes shipping costs lower. Being an older kit the Stuka probably comes in a more inefficient sized box for the parts and thus increases the shipping costs whilst also (by being larger) reduces the number that can be shipped in containers at any one time - increasing costs once again if they want to ship large numbers. The cartograph decals that are included cost quite a lot to produce and if it is a larger sheet of transfers (as i would expect) then that unit cost per sheet from italy will be quite high. In some kits each decal sheet costs just as much as the plastic parts in the box.
Good to see the 1/48 RAF Buccaneer - that almost feels like a new kit. Otherwise just one new tool aircraft, the Gannet (ignoring the 42 part F-35 starter set), which is a bit disappointing. Re-releases are always welcomed but it doesn't beat the excitement of a new tool kit.
Agreed. This year's Vintage reissues look grand. I can't wait to get my hands on the Bulldog. I do own some very old ones, mint in box, but I just can' bring myself to build them (Not least because of their price tag). Overall, this looks like it will be a good year for Airfix. They even claim to have the 1975 Stuka complete with Swastikas. I will wait and see. After market wheels are a necessity for the Stuka. The rubber tyres are terrible.
Not sure I agree. I am a bit unimpressed by this years aircraft releases for 1/72. I don't have the space or money for 1/48. Makes for the second year going where I won't be going Airfix.
I love aircraft, it’s all I really build. But it feels airfix is leaning more 1/48. All the 1/48 kits get nicer detail options. Especially in regards to ordnance. And they have released several really nice kits that would be wonderful in 1/72, Anson and Javelin come to mind. I am supremely jealous of all the 1/48 builders for the this years Gannet. But I can’t afford £50 for one model
@@kiwifruitpoo are you asking me? I’d say Airfix would rank high. And so would Special Hobby, Arma Hobby and the Ukrainian company KP. Though KP don’t really do British topics. Couldn’t rate them over each other though.
There are some very good aircraft models this year. OK too many at the tiny 1/72 but that seems to be a left over from the early years of AIRFIX. The 1/43 scale for the cars is bonkers again. They need to be 1/35 minimum but I guess if you want children with small hands to feel comfortable with them then a small size is fine. The price of the Gannet is a bit high. All in all I will buy quite a few of these models if I cannot find them in a larger scale at the time of ordering. AIRFIX has chosen well.
1/72 is a very popular scale and sees almost all companies produce models at that size. As mentioned in earlier comments, the 1/43 scale cars fits in with O gauge trains and also diecast collectors
Interesting selection but I am getting annoyed with the 1/43 new cars. Please Airfix, make them 1/32. The Army GS truck is not based on the KT ambulance. That's an Austin, the new truck is a Bedford. Thanks Matt
No new 1:72 releases aside from the starter F-35B. Good on them for encouraging new builders but nothing really on the table here aside from re-releases, which left me pretty disappointed. Next year maybe.
@@ModelMinutes it is! I was hoping for the 1/48 RAF buccaneer and that'd another kit on the shopping list for definite. But they superseded my expectations with the 1/72 Gulf war 1 release. I was thinking I might need an after market decals sheet for the earlier release of this same mold.
The range is nice with some decent re-releases and liveries. I'm just a little disappointed that if you want one of the new tooling's you have to buy it as a starter kit or bundled. There's no shortage of F35-B tooling's already on the market so I'm not sure what Airfix are thinking with this. I know they cannot cater for everyone but it just seems a bit odd that they are going to push anyone who want's an F-35 to another manufacturer when they have a brand new tooling of it available.
The F-35 is designed as a starter set so will feature less detail and a simpler construction method compared to normal "classic" kits. Whilst i'm sure it is possible that it could be boxed in the future with different transfers it makes sense that in the initial release this starter kit be sold appropriately
@@ModelMinutes You are correct I've just seen another video where Airfix have said it won't be getting a classic release at all. For some reason I had the impression there was a starter kit stand-alone and the bundled kits would be a standard classic kit rather than the starter.
@@Octanetwisted1983 they did something like that with the spitfire Vc, a starter set version with simpler parts and then a more complicated tooling with more detail for a classic kit, doesn't seem they have that intention with the F35

Real shame airfix didn't do a special Concorde kit for the 20th anniversary since the UK's most iconic aircraft retired. Great video by the way!
Thanks! They do have some Concorde kits from last years range still available
I really want to lay my hands on the Rotodyne and do it up in What-if livery.
that would be cool!
Will definitely pick up the Bristol Bloodhound and Brewster Buffalo from the vintage classics line.
me too!
Why is 1/43 scale a choice on cars? Wouldn't it be better to keep it standard with 1/48?
I think this was answered in previous comments, but in a nutshell it matches diecast car scale and also O gauge model trains
That Hawker Tempest looks awesome.
I've put my pre-order in for that one lol
Yep, some great new ones, and even older ones for me. FE2A for instance, Bloodhound just for nostalgia, and the 24th Stuka looks tempting, but where am I going to put it? (Polite answers only please 😂).
haha! Im running out of space for mine lol
Some really lovely stuff in 1/72 that I want to have a go at! Def gonna get the WWI biplane set, The PR mosquito probably the Brewster and the Postwar Tempest if I can get some treat money together!
nice!
Great overview, but I am a bit underwhelmed by this years releases. 9 new kits, only 2 new aircraft. Most of the rest are existing kits with different decals....
If you take a look at the decal schemes that they featured on their own video, i think they are pretty unique and interesting
Cool awesome kits I like the airplanes mostly. ❤️💘👍🤗😁😀✈️
Me too!
Looks great! Would love to build that Brewster Buffalo
me too!
Figures figures and more figures ! I miss my old 1/72nd scale Airfix figures.
they did launch some last year
Nice. Little disappointed at the lack of new tool aircraft, but that is quickly overshadowed by the gannet, rotodyne, auster, bond bug, bristol/fokker, and raf 48 buc for me!
I think there was quite a few new tools in 2022 so it is understandable they eased off a bit this year
I'll get the Gannet. I'd be an imposing thing to have on a shelf lol
it really would, especially with those folding wings
Definitely the Hunter and Sea Fury for me. My favourite jet and prop planes!!
good choices!
Yeah, ships aren't really Airfix's strong subject at the moment, but then I guess they can't release everything all the time because then they wouldn't sell
love this
:D
Both the Aston and the McLaren look very tempting.
good choice!
The Rotodyne is way over due in my opinion and I'd love to see a re tooling of it.
I've got one of those on pre-order :D
Very nice!
thanks!
1/43 is an odd scale for injection moulded plastic kits, it's really a much more scale common for die cast models. 1/32 or even 1/48 may have been more appropriate in plastic.
I don't think many people would mix solid heavy metal models with less robust glued together plastic kits, but you never know🤷♂
1/43 is inline with O gauge trains - so i suppose the thinking there is that model railway fans will get these vehicles to go with their trains
@@ModelMinutes You're right. I completely forgot that. I'm not a train person...
@@DavidLee-df888 I think that there will be 2 kinds of people that get these kits, those who want them to go with their trains, and those who just want to build them for what they are lol
Interested in the Ferret, but I wish they would reintroduce the Hurricane Mk.II but that's just me.
I asked about the Hurricane MkII/IV when i was in Margate last year (as it was my first ever kit) and I saw the tooling for it in the warehouse - sadly the response was "i can't say" when I asked if it was coming back in the vintage classics range . . .
Some good stuff there!
Interesting that the artwork for the Hawker Hunter shows the 'Tower Bridge incident':
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_Hunter_Tower_Bridge_incident
Thank you for putting this together!
thanks for watching! I did notice the artwork on that one :P
As a petrol head Brit' looking to get into modeling it's going to be DB5, McLaren & the S1 Landy
nice!
If they released a new tool 1/72 non starter set it would probably be a lot better but that’s only my opinion
there was quite a lot of those over the last few years though
I wish Airfix would someday re release the TBD Devastator
perhaps it will make a comeback in the vintage range
I now have a "significant" wish list
The only real oddity for me is the classic stuka costing more than the new spitfire
I don't know this for certain but these are the reasons I think could contribute to that price:
The Spitfire was designed to fit inside a certain sized box, which makes shipping costs lower.
@@ModelMinutes all valid, the other I was thinking was absolute volume too.
Phantom! Buccaneer! Goooodddd!!!
nice!
Well done Airfix I have built your kits for years. I would say that it would be great if you built your cars in 1/20 scale as 1/43 is just to small.
I feel that they probably won't produce any in that scale unfortunately
Good to see the 1/48 RAF Buccaneer - that almost feels like a new kit. Otherwise just one new tool aircraft, the Gannet (ignoring the 42 part F-35 starter set), which is a bit disappointing. Re-releases are always welcomed but it doesn't beat the excitement of a new tool kit.
dont forget all those car starter sets are brand new too
Thanks for sharing!
It was good to watch
thanks!
Do like that 1/35 lorry 👍
:D
Still no 1/48 Typhoons or Tempests.
if they are working on any it could be years before we see them
Not sure I agree. I am a bit unimpressed by this years aircraft releases for 1/72. I don't have the space or money for 1/48. Makes for the second year going where I won't be going Airfix.
that's ok, you don't have to agree - the aircraft heavy subjects that airfix picks aren't always everyone's cup of tea
I’m a 1:48 man, but I’d like to hear what companies you think do 1:72 best? Especially British subject matter?
@@callumr1998 thanks. I’ll check them out.
for me it';s 1:48 scale s.2b buccaneer the raf verison that's the stand out item for me
nice!
If I get anything it would definitely be that bf110
nice!
I don’t understand why Airfix put a F-35 with a Dambusters Lancaster.
They are both flown by 617 Sqn
yeah and flew together with the tornado and typhoon on the raids 75th anniversary
@@ModelMinutes makes sense I guess.
Oh thank goodness they are re-releasing the early harriers.
:D
So many awesome options. No clue where to start 😂
the Rotodyne would be my suggestion lol
Interesting selection but I am getting annoyed with the 1/43 new cars. Please Airfix, make them 1/32.
The Army GS truck is not based on the KT ambulance. That's an Austin, the new truck is a Bedford.
Thanks Matt
Thanks for letting me know!
Gotta save up my shillings for that 1/24 Stuka!
nice!
No new 1:72 releases aside from the starter F-35B. Good on them for encouraging new builders but nothing really on the table here aside from re-releases, which left me pretty disappointed. Next year maybe.
There were many new 1/72 releases over the past few years though, i guess they decided to focus on other scales this year
@@ModelMinutes true! I think I made the mistake of assuming “well if we got two last year then we’ll get another two this year!”
the McLaren 765LT and F-35 have caught my eye
nice!
10:51 mine!
nice!
