According to my dad, TriMet had powered some of its buses for the hills, tuning the 8V-71 Detroit Diesels up to 325 HP and of course tweaking the transmissions to handle this much power. An early 1975 TriMet promotional showed their 80 new buses, which were Flxible New Looks 100-179, as having a 325 HP Detroit Diesel 8V-71 engine.

Even when these busses were new every panel window and door rattled.

The standard axle ratio would be 5.38:1 as opposed to the hillclimbing version that would be 4.56:1.

Yes they had hydraulic power steering. Also were equipped with 4 stage electric retarder, really smooth operation! Think retarder was Telma brand????
