Thank you very much for making video on film cameras Please make more videos like this sir.... On film cameras, film stocks, film lab process We are waiting for this kind of videos
Great video. I shoot Super 8 but 16mm terrifies me. I chuckled at the end because your 'peace' sign with your fingers reversed means 'up yours' where I come from.
I've been yearning for these types of videos; I'm getting ready to shoot a short film later this year, and every project I work on I want to be shot on film. Please continue to make these videos, I beg of you!
@@arthurwoo I would love to see the difference in using 50D vs 500T, what benefits and disadvantage of using each. Also, the different filters used for 500T in daylight. Maybe the process of pushing and pulling the film; I've pushed and pulled b&w film stocks for photography, but I'm not sure how the process works when shooting films. Also, reviewing different lenses for 16mm if that's possible. I'm just really passionate about shooting film but there just really isn't anything out there about the process of doing it. Sorry for long reply, just a couple things off the top of my head.
arthur woo thanks I’ll check it out. My film is developed at the same lab in NYC. Metro post. I’m very excited about trying out Kodak’s Ektachrome 100. Can you recommend any workshops that teach film in NYC? I’m only an hour outside NYC
@@michaelhunt1368 Awesome! Metro Post is great. I can't say I know of any workshops in NYC. People I know who learned film either learned it from someone else, on set, or in film school. Then going out to experiment with it and finding people online to talk to about it!
Im working up to getting a silent-crystal-sync 16mm. Right now im at the Bolex Reflex stage. I love it. I keep saying that I'll sell my Bolex for an Arriflex, or Eclair... but i love it too much.
Hey Arthur. In this video you mention a 16mm camera discussion/comparison. Curious if that is posted yet. I took a shooting on film class at the local independent filmmaker society and shot on an Arri SR1, and am looking to maybe get an Aaton XTR or LTR. Curious if you have used each of these. The instructor teaches at SAIT and says the Aaton is pretty sweet. Thx.
I personally would only buy a used camera body at a reputable dealer who is able to get the camera inspected and would know what to look for to make sure it works properly.
Most of the time, the people I've worked with expect digital as the format that will be used on their projects. I've used film for a few directors who wanted that specific look of 16mm.
Usually you have planned your shots interior or exterior and therefore you have decided what film(ISO) will be in the camera for that particular shot. If you are changing the ISO during this time even on digital it means you didnt plan enough for your shoot. Unless you have a crazy idea out of the blue... most DP and crew have everything all planned out because usually with film you have a pre-light session where you are already taking exposure readings and figuring out where all of the lights are going to be placed so you arent wasting time on the shoot day with all of this preliminary decision making. its all decided all accounted for. Even the lenses are placed in order. A camera crew is amazing group of coordinated efforts everyone knows their job and executes like a clockwork..
Here's a perspective to look at it from: Film in all sorts of environments is fairly regular amongst a bunch of people I know, as well as myself. Commercial, doc, branded, etc. I carry 2 ASAs when shooting doc or branded, one for day, and one for evening. Because we don't always know where we'll end up.
I bring it to a local place in NYC that sends it off for development + scanning in-house and it's added onto one bill. I forget what the rate is off the top of my head, I think around 0.63 cents per foot if I remember correctly. So multiply that rate by however many feet of film is shot and you have your cost.
@@arthurwoo What do you think about the Canon scoopic 16m. That's more in my price range and they seem to be readily available right now. Only downsides that I see are it's 100 ft magazine and the lens can not be changed. I've seen footage from them that looks incredible and footage that looks worse than super 8 so I'm not too sure about it.
@@yeahrightbear8883 Not familiar with that one. I'm always hesitant about systems w/o an interchangeable lens. The quality could be from the quality of the scanning device used after the film is developed. From what I've heard, it's why people only go to certain places to get their scans done, because a lower quality one can produce less than optimal results.
This is a wonderful video.
Thanks!
Great overview Arthur. The last time I shot a film on 16mm was 1974! I’d love to try it again. I would for sure if I had an Aaton like yours!

this was a great! Man, I'm dying to shoot some Vison3 500T. I'm going to use some for my photography shoots.
Just catching up on messages, thanks! Film is fun!
Man I'd love to have the money to work with one of those
Work -> save -> repeat then buy lol. It’s how I did it
Great video. I shoot Super !6 on an Arri Sr2 Highspeed. Film has a certain look that can't be duplicated on digital
Thanks for watching! Agreed on the look. Though Steve Yedlin ASC has an interesting thought on that - check out his website for 'display prep demo'

Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the vid. It will be nice to see some footage!
Maybe in a future video!
Why is everyone shouting!
No but seriously great video ;)
Can't wait for the next vid!
*hats off*
Thanks! What other types of videos would you be interested in seeing?
@@arthurwoo I would glad if you make a video about how the 70mm film works. But maybe about the camera mechanical is good enough for the next vid 👍
There's nothing like good old fashioned film.
Totally agree!

I so want to get into 16mm. That is a awesome camera. I know what that is. I agree I need help.
Hello, what do you say, about buying, a Bollex 16

Hand store?

How long will raw stock last? I still have my 7293 sitting in my Freezer for the last 17 years unopened, I think Kodak discontinued this stock.
Just getting around to these questions - no idea how long they last. Wow 17 years, that's crazy!
@@arthurwoo thanks.
Excellent!
Thanks!

so how much did it cost per roll of film to be processed?

Check out my channel, there’s another video “deconstructing a color grade” using super 16 scanned footage

Haha. The Aaton xtr is not on the market. You can't find them anywhere and if you do they are expensive as hell.
I recently discovered that. Just 3 years ago they were still around and weren't super expensive. Unfortunate, it's a great camera.
