- A playthrough of Tecmo's 1991 football game for the NES, Tecmo Super Bowl.
I uploaded a video of Tecmo Super Bowl last year on Super Bowl Sunday in which I played as the 49ers. I thought it would be fun to revisit the game as a team playing in this year's Super Bowl, so this video shows an entire season, playoffs, and the Super Bowl played as the Cincinnati Bengals.
If you'd like to see last year's video, played as the San Francisco 49ers, you can find it at • Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)...
Tecmo Super Bowl is one of those rare games that was not only a massive success when it was released, but one that has continued to gain in popularity over the years since. What makes TSB even more unusual, though, it is part of a genre where games tend to be discarded and forgotten about within a year. How then does a lone NES football cart manage to stay relevant for nearly thirty years?
(Well, I mean besides not being related to Electronic Arts in any way.)
I'm not sure that there's a single reason for it, but TSB was a landmark game, and American nostalgia is huge on this one. It is based on the NFL's 1991 season schedule, and it was the first game to feature the licensed use of both NFL team and player names.
It's a fast-paced, arcade style game that was a blast with two players (as long as you both agreed that the Raiders were off-limits - Bo Jackson, damn!), and it introduced all sorts of things to the original Tecmo Bowl formula that gave it just enough depth to keep in interesting without overcomplicating it. Now included are things like the coin toss, fumbles, injuries, the tracking of individual player stats across games, player substitutions, and you can't forget those cutscenes, which have been amped up considerably since the original Tecmo Bowl!
Tecmo's cutscenes were always awesome - whether you were playing Ninja Gaiden, Bad News Baseball, or Tecmo Super Bowl, those colorful cartoon scenes were always good for stirring up some hype.
But the graphics overall were pretty amazing for the NES. Two full teams appear on the field at once without any slowdown, and the animation was pretty good for little stick-men characters. Why is everything so pink though?
And who could ever forget those voice samples? "Ready....Down... HUT, HUT, HUT, HUT!" Or if you were playing as Bo Jackson, you'd be hearing "TOUCHDOWN!" every ten seconds as you pulled off an 80+ point lead against the AI or a younger sibling.
Overall, Tecmo Super Bowl is a ridiculously great time and I don't even like football. I sure I'm not the only one to feel that way!

The nostalgia just puts a smile on my face. 1991. I was ten years old. My mother was still healthy and alive. Best years of my life
Tecmo Super Bowl is such a great game! 😀 I don't think there's ever been another football game I've liked quite as much as this.
Bo Knows Tecmo Super Bowl.
Joe Montana's Sports Talk Football was almost as good.
I play the sega version of this

This is fodder for hackers to tinker with its innards--sprites & code--to update it to a current or even previous years' roster of players. I will bet money that the finished ROM complete with reproduction cart can sell quicker and better than the next Madden.
This game is infinitely more fun than Madden 22.
No truer words have ever been spoken.
This should have more likes
What’s interesting is that this game had the NFL license but it was made in Japan. That just shows how much of a presence the NFL, along with other American sports leagues, have had in other nations. Not to mention Tecmo not just made the game fun to play but also added some drama to it with their cutscenes. (Around that time, Tecmo was big on adding cutscenes to their games. Just look at their “Ninja Gaiden” and “Captain Tsubasa” games.)
Best football game of all time.
Nah. One of them.
There's a game called ESPN NFL 2K5, you should check a few reviews about it. 😉
@matt Highly possible my friend, I'm sure a lot of people are aware of its incredible popularity among reviewers/UA-camrs and are asking ridiculous prices for a copy. Which is sad because I believe the game was only $20 or $25 when it was released, I doubt you can find a copy for that price today 😉😂
@@LITTLE1994 Yes. The best football game of all time. No one single game moved football in gaming further along than Tecmo Super Bowl did. First with NFLPA AND NFL licensing. First with legit stat saving. First to simulate the little things in football like man in motion, play action, reverses, flea flickers, and bootlegs. NFL 2K5 is a phenomenal game...2nd best of all time in my opinion. But it did not push football gaming along as much as Tecmo Super Bowl did. You don't get a 2K5 without TSB.
This is the only Super Bowl that I am going to watch.
That's one of the best snare samples in an NES game
I still remember borrowing this game from my youngest cousin when it was still relatively new. I forgot to return it for about 2 weeks and he told me I could keep it when he bought himself a Sega Genesis. I STILL have the game to this day!!

The best football game of all time and on my short list of the best video games of all time, period. No one single game moved football in gaming further along than Tecmo Super Bowl did. First with NFLPA AND NFL licensing on the same game. First with legit stat saving. First to simulate the little things in football like man in motion, play action, reverses, flea flickers, and bootlegs. NFL 2K5 is a phenomenal game...2nd best of all time in my opinion. But it did not push football gaming along as much as Tecmo Super Bowl did, nor was it as intuitive to just pick up and play if you were a football novice as TSB. There's a steep learning curve with 2K5. You don't get a 2K5 without TSB.
One of my favorite games of all time. Thank you.
The greatest Football game to ever grace. That's not even a contest right there.
😂😂😂
As a matter of fact, the Tecmo Bowl, Madden NFL, NFL 2K and NFL GameDay franchises are the best NFL video game franchises of all-time!
This was a revolutionary game back in the day.
What a great and underrated game
The version of the game that I wish was included in Virtual Console and and the NES Mini. Better graphics, sound, just everything that you can imagine.
There is arcade archives Tecmo bowl on the switch. Dunno if you played that.
Probably because Nintendo would need the rights from the NFL to use the player rosters and team logos
I'd bet $20 that this fun playthrough will be far more entertaining than tonight's big game 😉.
@CS Local 😆 That's awesome, thanks!
In my opinion this is the BEST NES sports game and one of the most incredible games of all time. It has infinite replay value. I still play this game with my buddies and own them with Warren Moon. Who are your favorite players? Wayne Haddix? Bo Knows? Lawrence Taylor? "QB Eagles"?
LT definitely could. He was so fast in this game. Mike Singletary was awesome too, he could run right through most offensive lines.
Vinny testaverde and the ravens on John Madden Football 1997 on SNES. And same on QB club 98 on 64
@@cjones3710 Nice! I grew up as a Jets fan so I always really liked Vinny. 1994 Browns were great too.
@@rjcupid I watched them on TV in old Municipal Stadium. What a super castle that was. A grand palace. Like Yankee Stadium, or old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore strong, American steel.
@@cjones3710 I loved Municipal Stadium even though it was deeply flawed (There were seats directly behind poles where your view was totally blocked). Best stadium I have ever been to (by far) is Dodger Stadium. Tiger Stadium was amazing too.
Great football game for NES. My father loves that game.
Such a solid game
Been a while since i've seen your playthroughs, glad i came back
I forgot about Mighty Bomb Jack at the end of this. Fun!
"OPEN WIDE FOR SOME SOCCER!!!!" 😂 seriously, this game is miles better than Recent madden games
I LOVE TECMO BOWL AND TECMO SUPER BOWL!
Not surprised to see this. Good call.
Spent hours and hours playing this game, my friend's and i had tournaments, i used the Giants of course
Good choice for tonight’s big game
Sweet your the best gamer hands down thank you
I played this game so much. Perfect
Extraordinary video.
This video game series would give Madden some competition if E.A.'s greedy ass didn't keep the NFL license to themselves.
Better than modern sports games thats for sure.
Still plays better than Maddens Frostbite engine
memories love that game.
3:44:54 Still have this image and music come to mind if/when SF wins the NFC West during the season.
The 3rd one for the snes is my fav
Kendall Smith is a very good PR on Tecmo Bowl
My favorite football game over all others. Why is there no remaster of this legendary classic yet?
copyright reasons
It did get a remake on the SNES, Genesis, and PlayStation.
@@NintendoComplete Didn't know about the PlayStation version, interesting. But I bet this would be incredible on a PS4, Switch or PS5.
This game and nfl2k5 goat games and og joe Montana football was dope
Grab the Raiders and use Bo Jackson until you win it all, LOL. 😁 BK
Hut Hut Hut Hut Hut. ❤️
I WON THE GAME! AND I'M GONNA JUMP!
BO JACKSON!
Go Bengals 😅😅 I Love Bengals 😅❤❤
I dont remember the computer being that bad. Bengals should've lost to the Chief's ... lol. Throws the ball on the swing pass who was covered and not to the 4 guys running wide open down the field. Haha
I usually play the Giants, 49ers, or Chiefs
Are you going to do a Rams version too?
Sorry, but it's just this one. It's a long game to play all the way through twice like that back to back.
@@NintendoComplete Totally understandable; I just wondered why you picked Cincinnati over the Rams?
@@okolo22000 I didn't have any feelings about either team, so I went with the one closest to the top of the team selection screen :)
Can you make this a Yearly thing or is that too much?
I dunno, I just might :)
who is ready for round 2 i know i'am
Are you ready for some Football!?
I have this on Nintendo Switch online
Why did you never control David Fulcher? He’s the best DB in the game, even better than Deion.
why was it called super bowl instead of bowl like an snes game
because NFL licensed it so they named it after the championship game.
That's interesting to know. I only played the snes version of this "tecmo super bowl"
Bo Jackson?
