We Are So Small In the Vast Infinity of Space | Incomplete Guide to Starsector (0.96a) Ep 1

- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- Today, we begin our journey in Starsector with a tiny fleet of only two ships--hardly worthy of the word "fleet." There is some trouble in the Galatia system that has closed off the system from the rest of the sector. It's up to us to repair the jump gates as we work our way through the tutorial!

Came here from the discord, nice to see:
1) A tutorial LP
2) A tutorial LP on vanilla
3) A tutorial LP that starts by playing the actual game.
4) Good mic and video quality.
All four are rare. TY :D
Hey, I"m glad you like what I've got on tap! The vanilla game has so much to offer, and it's such an inscrutable game that I feel like a regular Let's Play just wouldn't have done it justice. Hope you enjoy the series! :) Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
Never thought I'd hear you say "Hello everyone, my name is Kurazarrh and welcome to STAR SECTOR" but I'm very excited about this series!
Hehehe, awesome, I'm glad you're looking forward to it! I had talked about playing this game oh, sometime back in December, I think. It got mentioned (ever so briefly) in the first season of the Vintage Story Guide, but I was waiting for 0.96 to drop!
@@KurazarrhI am sorry. I tried to get into this, but I just can't seem to...
BUT, I am going to watch, like and comment them all because I want to support you.
So hurry up and get your 50k so I don't have to as much. And don't try to talk me out of it...I'm committed.
Starsector is one of those indie games that has been driven almost entirely by word of mouth and a passionate community. The dev is awesome, and puts out a ton of quality work with updates. I think I bought my license like, 10 or 11 years ago when there were only 2 or 3 systems you could travel to. Now you're able to create your own faction and colonize planets, with something approaching a storyline, and so many new ships. It's crazy. Plus, the community is pretty amazing, with a *ton* of mod support out there with new factions/ships or gameplay systems if you end up wanting to bridge out from what's available officially.
Oh wow, you're one of the OG! I first got into Starsector at the tail end of 0.91. I love the level of thought and care that Alex puts into the game's development! Haven't tinkered much with mods because there's already so much to do in the game, and by the time I hit the end of the game, there's usually another playthrough with a different fleet build that I want to try!
@@Kurazarrh pshhh nah lol. I bought in early, but haven't played anywhere near enough to be considered an "OG". haha.
@@acolytetojippity Lol! Just a lurker OG, then! ;)
I binged your Vintage Story playthrough a month ago and because of SSeth I learned about this wonderful game and was pleasantly surprised that you have guides on it)
Hey, awesome! I hope you enjoyed the Vintage Story Guide, and that you find this series equally entertaining and useful! :)
Hello, wanted to thank you for how helpfull you've been to me who only recently found out about the game. I really enjoy your chill approach, calm voice and no trash editing. Thanky you.
Hey I'm glad you're enjoying it and finding the series educational! :)
Hey Kurazarrh, Just wanted to leave a comment, great guided playthrough! Following it! Made the start of the game a lot more enjoyable!
Awesome, I'm glad to hear it! Starsector can be difficult to grok without some kind of guide or at least watching other people play. My experience with it was much the same when I was starting out!
Thanks for making this video, it helped me as a completely new player. All the other guide videos I found tend to focus the min/max aspects of early choices when I was still trying to grasp the absolute basics and looking for some more general guidance
Hey, I'm glad to hear you're finding it helpful! I hope it continues to be a useful guide to you as you learn the game!
This game feels a bit like a remix of a couple of 90s PC games, the story/mission elements of Wing Commander Privateer and the combat mechanics of Subspace.
Yeah, it stands on the shoulders of giants a bit. Also in how, like in the (early) 90s, you couldn't just look up the game on a wiki or gamefaqs, you had to watch a friend play and learn by word-of-mouth or trial and error! XD
Its good to pick up modspecs when you find them if you can afford it, once you have one learned then it wont appear later in market loot tables or salvaging research stations etc, even if you don't plan to use it it means the ones you do want to use are more likely to show up moving forward.
I think Alex removed that exploit at some point. I've been getting duplicate modspecs from research stations and such lately. I think it still does remove it from the markets, though.
I've bounced off of Starsector a few times before as it's learning curve is pretty steep if you go in completely blind. Watching this series and playing on my own has helped me start to feel like I'm getting a real grasp on the game. So thanks for that.
I still have a lot to learn about combat and building ships lol. I mostly use the tactical mode for combat and as such like to sit in a carrier and let the AI do the work.
Oh yeah, games like Starsector, with a high skill ceiling AND floor are ready to try, get burned on, and put down forever. I hope you'll eventually get into piloting your own ship! Even a mildly competent player can generally run circles around the AI. Hopefully this series might give you the insight you need to make those connections! :)
@@Kurazarrh I definitely would like to become half decent at piloting, is there any ship you'd recommend using to start learning? Thinking about starting a second campaign just to fight and try to learn combat in.
@@hansknickerbocker9202 In the early game, the Hammerhead is great to learn on. It's reasonably fast, reasonably armored, shields over most of its hull, and your weapons all point forward, so you don't have to try to manage your weapon facing separately from your shields. Or you could go with the Apogee start--it's a slower ship but has great shields and large weapon mounts (though you won't find any in Ancyra). Later on, if you're looking for a good, easy to pilot capital ship, look at the Paragon. Very straightforward, especially if you do a beam build.
@@Kurazarrh Thanks, I thought the Hammerhead might be good since it's the combat tutorial ship. Funny you mention the paragon as on my current game I find an Astral, a Paragon and an Aurora in one of the first systems I randomly decided to explore. It was remarkably dangerous (for me, at least) I think there was a Remnant Nexus, two Sub-Ordos and an Ordo or whatever the bigger one is called. All guarding two Terran worlds and an Azure world.
Never heard of this game before, but it looks awesome. Thanks for putting this little gem on my rader, ill definitely have to try it out
Sure thing! Glad you liked the look of it. :)
Always wanted to get into this game but it felt pretty daunting, glad to have a series to delve into the game a bit.
It is pretty daunting; it's kind of a firehose of information right to the face with all the dials and knobs and buttons and flashing lights. I hope the series helps ease you into the game! :)
Gee thanks, another time-sink obsession, you're a real pal! 🤣Where does one find this very interesting-looking game? it reminds me of a game I played back in the day (mid-90s maybe?). It was more of a space economy/trading management game, but there's enough for the nostalgia to kick in...
There were a ton of fun old space economy sims, like Freelancer and Space Bucks!
I have a link in the video description that goes straight to the developer's site. They use an unconventional merchant and key delivery system, but I can vouch that it works and is safe to use.
OMG this is Starsector from Kuzazarrh, it’s absolutely amazing!
:D Glad you like it!
It's like you read my mind Kurazarrh! I've been watching videos about this game for a while and bought it but was totally lost, now you're doing the incomplete guide to it. Woohoo
Hey, awesome! I hope the series helps you figure out how to get into and enjoy the game! :)
I have never heard of this game before, but looking forward to learning more about it:)
Awesome, thanks for giving this new series a shot, and I hope you enjoy the game! :)
Thanks for doing this series, there don’t seem to be a lot of recent Let’s plays for Starsector with a tutorial component. Looking forward to watch the other parts!
Hey, I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for stopping to comment. I hope the rest of the series is helpful and/or entertaining!
Suuuper excited for this series, I have always wanted to play this game, but wasnt brave enough to take the plunge. Now ill know a little more before i start :)
I hope you find this series helpful! Starsector is DEFINITELY the kind of game you really need to watch someone else play before you play it yourself. It's exactly how I got into the game. There is just so much information and too many systems that interact with each other to just dive into it blindly. I've got several friends who tried that, and all of them felt overwhelmed by the game.
Very excited to see you play Starsector! A personal favorite.
Awesome! I think it's such a good game, but it can be daunting to get into!
Been waiting for this since the community post. This is gonna be good!
Awesome! Glad to see you're excited for the series! Let me know what you think of it! :)
Fun fact, flux is kind of heat. It's the rate at which energy (typically thermal energy) is moving through an area of a material
Yep! I'm not sure if I described it like that in this series, but when I talk about it with others, I generally compare it to heat.
I'm excited for the new series!
:D Awesome! Glad to hear it!
32:00 "they will give you no trouble"
Basically an invitation into drug trade. A few runs, and you can leave the tutorial as a decently rich spacer.
True! It's not going to make you fabulously rich, but it'll make for a solid nest egg for buying your first cruiser or something!
I figured ud try this one out LOL I love this game
:D I love me some Starsector. I've been playing since 0.91 and really wanted to share it for a while now!
A what? Starsector? Yes!
:D I hope you enjoy the series!
Thank you for the series. I just bought this game and I’m having a blast . And I curious what’s weird about your keyboard? Lol
Hey thanks! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series! As for my keyboard, I'm a lefty, so I don't use the WASD keys, but I also use the Dvorak layout, so the apparent letters are very confusing to some people! XD
Speaking as a proud junker captain D-Mods are not the worst thing in the world, some D-mods are generally easy to ignore having no profound impact in combat or on logistics, but only a few.
But every D-mod on a ship reduces its CR recovery post combat and one of the late Logistics tree perks actually applies further bonuses for each D-mod.
Some ships as well come with a built in mod called Rugged Construction which halves the effects of all D-mods, makes the ships hard to fully destroy so they can frequently be recovered after being blown up in combat.
Yeah, I kind of wish there was a way of telling the game "don't fix this d-mod." Like, if I have glitched sensor array or faulty automated systems, I'm not gonna care (usually), or compromised storage on a vessel with an already small amount of storage. Those are worth their weight in recovery supplies!
Thnakfully the game itself does have Mods for it, and I think I saw a relatively new one that lets you pay to add specific D-mods at ports. But for a vanilla experience farming D-mods is a chore and keeping only specific ones is basically impossible.
I will say the one D-Mod you never want on a ship is Ill-advised modifications, its a unique D-mod that mostly is found on Luddic Path variant ships and it basically means your ship is functionally at 0%CR all the time as weapons or engines randomly cut out. The worst part is even if you get blueprints and have your colonies build your own LP variants they still come with the D-mod.
@@ham8426 Yeah I remember when the LP Brawler was considered the best version due to the built-in SO, but not anymore! Shame, too, some of their designs are neat. I don't think the LP Prometheus Mk II has IAM, though, but not 100% positive.
I think the LP might still be the best variant to the brawler specifically but if you want hard hitting frigates you can definitely do better.
=Vigilance have medium missile slots so can sport pilums for long range bombardment.
=Vanguards lack any shields and are good tanky armor boys with impressive speed being among the fastest not counting some of the high tech frigates.
=Omens are surprisingly versatile and can usually solo most other frigates and even keep destoyers and cruisers occupied, which you wouldn't think at first glance given their apparent role as a PD platform.
=Hyperion is probably one of the strongest frigates but is tricky as hell to pilot and the AI does not pilot it very well, for as expensive as they are to maintain if you aren't piloting it you may as well not bother.
The issue with Brawlers is their forward facing design and a rather mediocre move speed and maneuverability as well as relatively poor flux stats given it has 2 forward facing medium hard points. Which is a universal problem for all variants of the Brawler, having SO built in makes the LP stand out for being able to make maximum use of those two medium slots. I tried making the TT brawlers functional, but that was before the update and there's new energy weapons now so it may be worth a second look, idk, they were pretty bad before but maybe just as Graviton escorts they have some use now given the buff to Graviton beams.
@@ham8426 My personal favorite to pilot out of the frigates is the Tempest. A Tempest with an Omen buddy make for a great task force that can take on ships by themselves that they absolutely have no business 1v1ing! XD
I have travelled to the future to watch this series in tandem with the VS series im halfway thru season 1 of still.
Haha, that's awesome! There should be plenty of plutonium here in the future to fuel your modified DeLorean whenever you need to go back to the Vintage Story age! Just go to any corner drug store!
YO LETS GOOOOO I love this game
Awesome! Hope you enjoy the series!
The only thing I find irritating is when you salvage ships it says you found 29 credits in their computer core. When I ship cost 100,000 or 400,000 credits that’s like saying I found a half bottle of ranch dressing in the fridge.
Haha, I like that. Yeah it is like finding a bottle of ranch dressing. But then again, if a ship's been blown up, then maybe there's just too much debris to comb through, or the USB sticks with full bitcoin wallets were burned or destroyed!
oh cool, I'm playing through starsector right now. Are you just gonna touch the fundamentals or are you gonna do some of the end-game stuff like conquering factions or fighting the special [REDACTED] encounters?
My goal is to touch as many aspects of the game as I can during this series! If you're familiar with my channel's main series, the Vintage Story Guide, the intent here is to provide a guide that's not just a tutorial, but a "here's how to actually play and accomplish these things in the context of playing the full game." :) So [REDACTED] are absolutely on the list. Conquering factions is a definite maybe; I've never been able to do it, haha. Not to mention the game does kind of prevent you from fully conquering them with plot armor for factions and locations that are important to the story.
@@Kurazarrh well in that case I'm looking forward to watching you get shredded by the bossfights
@@Esoteric_5075ism Haha, undoubtedly I'll be getting wrecked on occasion. I'm FAR from the best player or pilot and often enough, I manage to survive on luck and luck alone! XD
Leeeet's goooooooo!

Fun Fact: A Space Unit is the distance between earth and the sun.
Wouldn't that be Astronomical Unit (AU)? ;)
is that so? maybe i misstranslated@@Kurazarrh
@@mrripperjr2644 Ah, gotcha. Didn't realize you were translating. But yeah, in English, they're Astronomical Units! ;)
you Recommended game?
Absolutely. Especially if you enjoy very satisfying, crunchy numbers and optimization of your character (and ship, and fleet) from a dozen angles at once. It's my jam!
Honestly, i wanted to play this game for a long time but the turn based elements turned me off
I'm not sure if there was a turn-based combat system at some point in the past, but I am happy to report that that is no longer the case! Battles are held in real-time (with pause available). :)
@@Kurazarrh I meant the tactical RTS like system, i didnt quite remember correctly.
excuse me ?? Starsector content on this channel ??
well for once its a game i know at least as much or more than you :D
Haha, probably more than I do. I am absolutely not the best Starsector player, probably a B+ at best, but I optimize for my play style, so it tends to work... until I run into an enormous pirate fleet or decide to jump into a neutron star system without saving first...
@@Kurazarrh Can't wait to see you struggle against the [REDACTED] and the [SUPER REDACTED] !
@@nemergix1707 I can handle the [REDACTED] pretty well. It's the Doritos that throw me for a loop. @.@
To the new player DON'T PLAY VANILA go full HARDCOR mods (Nexerelin) trust me you gonna spend 100+h it to it
Haha. I dunno, I think it's good to get a feel for the games more basic mechanics and then dive into the megamods. I want to play with Nex and that industrial one that adds a lot of colony options.
