The only way is tariffs to limit their own citizens from buying Chinese goods and be dependent on domestic products if these middle-class and poor consumers can even afford domestic products and that's even if their domestic goods are of better quality than the Chinese which a big "if".

Why place in tariffs when the prices will fall into the hands of American consumers? Let’s face it, manufacturing will never come back to the US like it did before, but this was inevitable. What we would be better off doing is, instead of putting so many tariffs on Chinese goods, we should be investing in multiple other countries to develop an infrastructure and manufacturing base like China’s that can compete with Chinese manufacturing, such as India, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Tariffs should be applied much more selectively, especially when it comes to defense and infrastructure, and should be paired with domestic subsidies to encourage some of these jobs to come back to the US.

@@鄧楠-z6s The drug cartel problem is something that both the US and China have an interest in cracking down on. China does not want to be seen as a drug exporter, yet through its lax regulations allows the export of dangerous chemical precursors to criminal groups. As for the industrial base in Mexico, already Mexico is the biggest trading partner with the USA, and the USA is helping to further increase its industrial and infrastructure base. Not just USA, but other Latin and European countries are choosing to invest in Mexico as a sign of confidence. New Tesla factories are built there, and economy is growing fast. Already Mexican products are more competitive than even Chinese due to cheaper labor and production costs, and the cost of importing and tariffs is much lower since Mexico is a neighbor and friendly towards the USA.

Once you lost it, you couldn’t get it back again. That is the reality of the manufacture supply chains in the world. People’s “greediness” for the higher wage is totally contradicted by the greediness of your capitalism system and capitalists. Tariffs on Chinese imports protect the losers of domestic industries and hurt average U.S. consumers. Tariffs won't bring factory jobs back to the US because they aren't profitable for US corporations. China graduates 900,000 engineers annually. Whereas the US graduates only 70,000. China has a modern infrastructure and a whole supply chain. Whereas the U.S. infrastructure is crumbling and the US has de-industrialized to the point where it doesn't make anything anymore, how can the US compete with China? Well, it can't. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Just like Toyota, Nissan, and Honda do manufacturing in the USA. The sensible solution to "China Shock" is to let the Chinese set up EV manufacturing in the US and employ US workers to produce goods for US consumers.

Last night's debate has brought to the forefront serious concerns about the cognitive abilities and stamina of those aspiring to lead our nation. It's alarming to see the incumbent, arguably the most powerful person in the world, struggle to articulate coherent thoughts without the aid of a teleprompter. The excuses of 'having a cold' or it being '9 pm' are frankly inadequate when we're discussing the individual responsible for making critical decisions that affect millions of lives.
Consider the gravity of the situation: we're living in a world with two active wars, and the person we elect needs to be ready to lead at any hour, under any circumstances. The presidency isn't a 9-to-5 job with scheduled breaks.
While personal likability and stance on social issues like LGBTQ+ rights are important, they shouldn't be the primary factors in choosing a leader. We need to critically evaluate each candidate's ability to perform under pressure, communicate clearly, and make sound judgments in complex geopolitical scenarios.

We (Egypt) completely abandoned local production and reliant on importing goods. Every year, inflation goes up and tariffs goes up while the citizens are getting beat down. It's just a way for the government to make more money. This leads to products that are a lower cost than the market would otherwise allow. The US does this too, for a long time with agriculture and more recently with the chips act. To put a little more context the EU is upset with the chips act for the same complaints that have been expressed about China, that it gives American companies an unfair advantage in the market.

If tariffs cause manufacturers to switch to a local supplier, it is a net benefit to the economy. As per your example the money for materials no longer just leaves, but instead pays the salaries of steelworkers and miners. Even if supplier remains outside the economy, the tariffs go into the budget to fund social programs. If done correctly, they can be used to reduce inequality and increase the living standard of lower income citizens. But that is a big if.

In an ideal world, you are right. The problem is we still live in a world where there is no global government above sovereign states, so great powers dictate who gets what, when, and how through a combination of military, financial, and other ways of imposing its will on others. This is where national security comes in. As a superpower seeking to maintain its global status and ability to project power, the United States simply cannot allow itself to be too dependent on another great power or superpower for key products and intermediary goods, not to mention China is a strategic competitor. Then there is ideology and system of governance. While liberal democracies are surely more stable in the long run, Chinese and Russian autocracies do have short term abilities to concentrate domestic resources in a perverse manner to achieve their elites’ political objectives. Such short term abilities (like China’s industrial policies and Russia’s militarism) can do significant damage to US and its allies. It is for this reason that the United States and soon the EU have abandoned globalization beginning in 2018. It is realpolitik. You support free trade when you are on top of the global supply chain, but you need to protect yourself when a peer competitor emerges. If the other side subsidizes its strategic industries, you got to figure out a way to offset those subsidies so you don’t become dependent on great powers too risky to depend on.

the US see others as tools, China has every right to develop itself.
Actually I see China as a great example of how a country impoverished by colonial powers and civil war rose to become a fast developing mordern nation.
The US wants free trade and global order, but only when free trade and global order mean the US can exploit other nations for their wealth.
I imagine the good and prosperity the US could have brought to the world after 1991 and what the US actually did, haven't we suffered enough?

US is not the only country China trade with. Hope Chinese manufacturers mark up the price specially for US.

We, the Chinese, are here to do business. Price acceptable? Quality acceptable? Terms acceptable? Then the purchase js made. If it isn’t, then go back to the drawing table.
It’s weird how Americans think Chinese manufacturers are in it to lose money, and that we all get subsides.
You guys bail out all the big corps when they fail. And let them pay next to zero taxes when they make billions.
We sure have internal policy issues, but to sell to the public that it is not the govs fault, but some other country half way around the world’s, and just pass it off for the next guy to fix… that’s just a house of cards.

What now then open the other sectors the same way, let all the cheep doctors, engineers, Plumber , Etc to come here freely to give cheep services, no they will eat up all the jobs but it’s ok to imports duty free and ended up shutting most of our industry.

Tariffs will only put more taxes on American importers, who will pass the higher price on goods, and the American public will pay. Chinese manufacturers will find other markets to make up for the difference.
