    Can’t believe all these people knocking the Linn. I absolutely love mine and I have had several other top quality turntables over the years but the LP12 is my favourite.

      You can get a turntable similar to the Linn lp12 for a fraction of the cost. The AR turntable incarnations from the 1980s. Same type of suspension and the tonearm can be swapped out. So there ya go.

    What I find odd here is that according to Linn, all of the tiniest details have to be right for the deck to perform to its optimum, yet they are able to offer custom finishes. I would have thought, given Linn's insistence on everything being specified to ensure optimum performance, that there would only be one type of wood grain (or carbon weave, or whatever) that would be suitable as a covering for the plinth in order to ensure maximum information capture. I am left to wonder just how much gender specific, bovine evacuation syndrome we are being fed. Nothing against the Sondek in this; it's a well made and good quality turntable, but I rather doubt it's semi-mythical status.

    • @InfiniteBaffle
      @InfiniteBaffle  2 роки тому

      Linn are fastidious in their pursuit for the best possible sound - although I'm not sure even with this attention for detail they'd suggest that the colour of the plinth could affect the sound - the choice of wood and its construction certainly, but the colour of plinth options are purely a personal choice for an added bit of personalisation. Most of our customers go for oak, walnut or a similar iconic wood but there are more than a few who have gone for some fantastic RAL colours which really pop.

      We service and look after a lot of old LP12 as well, but the latest range has been developed many times over since the older models, which in contrast to other high end turntables in many cases makes the Linn look like good value for what you're getting. We have the Majik, Akurate and Klimax LP12 all on demo in our showroom though and when we reopen after the current UK lockdown we'll be inviting customers in again to hear the differences for themselves :)

    Is the table not flat, it wobbles.

    • @InfiniteBaffle
      @InfiniteBaffle  3 роки тому

      There are really 2 distinct ways to design turntable - either very, very heavy and put it onto an isolated surface so its got so much mass that it plays vinyl smoothly, or with suspension in the turntable itself that's designed to isolate the playing area/tonearm from external vibrations - the latter is essentially the design of the LP12 with sprung suspension. It works very well in practice when playing and you can see this whole area move on its suspension when touched as on this video :)

    • @David-vb8tg
      @David-vb8tg 2 роки тому

      @@InfiniteBaffle yeah but you have it lifted up off the table surface aswell....thats whats causing the crazy wobble here. we all know the linn has springs under the platter. youve got something else going on. why are the feet of the plinth off the table?

  • @Drushky
    @Drushky 2 роки тому

    for that price you could at least opt for a direct drive motor :))) not saying that belt drive are shit, but there's still an extra element added to the rotation in order to move the platter, element that will eventually break, crack or enlarge after some time....

    • @InfiniteBaffle
      @InfiniteBaffle  2 роки тому +1

      There are certainly advantages and disadvantages to each. Direct drive doesn't rely on a belt but there are lots of potential issues due to motor noise. Doesnt matter if you're DJing with something suitable (hence why most DJ turntables are direct drive) but for hi-fi listening especially where you may be more likely to listen to music with quieter passages, motor noise is very much a thing and the delicate signal picked up by a cartridge can easily pick this up - this is why most hi-fi turntables are belt drive. While you need to ensure your belt is in good order (and replace it periodically when needed) the motor is away from the platter so its far less likely any noise will be picked up by the cartridge. In most cases too a belt should last a good few years at least of moderate use but you can always double check speed using a strobe disc if concerned and in the grand scheme of listening pleasure, belts arent too expensive to replace. Hope this helps.

    Lovely sounding turntable well worthy of the respect it gets. It is regrettable the cultist crapola surrounding the LP12 back in the 70s and 80s. Ridiculous hyperbole and almost religious fervour promulgated by it's maker and various "Linnies" at the time as part of it's marketing strategy. I well remember it and even got caught up with it for a while. That said it was indeed sonically superior to the bulk of Japanese direct drives that saturated the market in the late 70s. But the differences were not as great as Ivor T proclaimed. And some tables like Oracle, Logic, Ariston, even a well set up Thorens TD 126 or Dual 701 easily matched the Linn and in some respects beat it (the Oracle).

    • @InfiniteBaffle
      @InfiniteBaffle  2 роки тому +1

      You could say the same thing about something else which has been around for a long time and improved over time like the 911 - plenty of other/cheaper options which may match it but that doesn't take anything away from it as a marvel of engineering with a fascinating story of lots of improvements over time and pride of ownership - somewhat like the LP12

    • @michaelb9664
      @michaelb9664 Рік тому

      @@InfiniteBaffle comparing the 911 to the LP12 is hilarious 😂
      The differences between a 911 and more mundane cars is far larger than the differences between an LP12 and more affordable turntables.

      This is the suspension and isolation from external elements at play :) Similar principle to car suspension really. If you watch a car overall it could appear to wobble over bumps in the road but the suspension keeps the car as smooth and even as possible so the wheels absorb much of the movement. Its the same principle here with the suspension on an LP12 within its plinth

      Its not quite that expensive..! All personal preference though of course - some people are more than happy with something cheap and cheerful, others appreciate the engineering and continual improvements that have gone into something like the LP12 over time and want to hear every nuance of the music - but you need a good system and good speakers to do it. Each to their own, after all its all about the music 🙂
