You guys are incredibly fortunate to have family and friends with the knowledge and willingness to tackle this project. It is quite refreshing to see, as it is less common now-a-days. Bob is an absolute animal!
Home owner 101: all projects, even the ones that go well, usually take 3x longer than expected. 201 if you haven’t been to the store 3x to get and return items for the original project, you probably will. These are all Murphy’s Law related to home projects… love the videos!!!
Glad I held the job as a carpenter for almost 10 yrs. The first construction company I worked for, my boss was the type who wanted to do literally every job required to build a house from digging the footer to putting on the shingles and everything in between. I learned alot in that time and it has served me well as a home owner and saved my wife and I some serious money. One day, I may be like Bob and help my kids with their future homes.
Not sure what I love more, renovation videos or MTBs. thanks for the vids, it takes me back to my own "buying my first house" memories :)
NOTHING beats demo days. Except the FINISH day! They are usually separated by weeks of uncertainty and shock!
The most important question needs to be answered: “Did Bob get his birthday ice cream??”
Awesome job, this will look amazing when it’s done! Keep doing what you do!
He did. It *might* have had all the Swiss almonds on one side because that's the way they refroze, but that saved him having to mine for them 🤣
Two of my favorite things to watch on Utube. Biking and Home renovation, now I can get both on one channel. Oh Yeah.
As someone who *loves* watching home reno videos, I am totally stoked that yall are sharing this process!! Good luck!
Congratulations on buying your first house. It's beautiful. May it be a happy home and be a great home-base for many fun-filled rides. Cheers.
And here we have a lesson in why it is important to have a variety of skills. Great, you can ride a bike, but can you renovate/rewire a house! Good on all of you to take this on! Syd, who cares how tight your ceiling drywall is, not likely going to see those lines after some spackling and paint, and the dazzling brilliance of your pot (recessed) lights!!! Awesome progress, team, really enjoying being on this journey with you, thanks for letting us in!
Clicked for a bike session and got a home remodel! Two for the price of one! Great video!
So cool that you are sharing this journey. Excited to continue to watch the progress. It’s so rewarding working on you own home.
My Husband introduced me to your channel! He and I lived in Los Alamos for 6ish years (in the western area) before moving to ABQ....love seeing the familiar scenery...:0)
At least you had the most important thing working, the stove for the coffee machine 😂. Gota love the old school coffee machine. In Australia we call it ‘open plan living’ by removing the walls.
Demo/reno is a monumental task. Spent countless hours doing exactly this kind of work, over the years. I feel your pain and triumphs. Keep at it. So stoked for you guys.
It's great that his parents can jump in and help. Drywall doesn't have to be perfect. You can always mud and sand it.
About halfway thru the video when you uncovered all the wiring and extra junction boxes, I was reminded of an old house we lived in that had an issue with the basement lighting. So one day I decide I'm going to fix it once and for all. So I take down/apart the lighting fixtures and I just stare at them for a while thinking something is wrong but I don't quite understand what. I take out a piece of paper and start drawing it up and then it hits me they are in series. Take out another piece of paper and draw up how it should look in parallel and proceed to re-wire accordingly. So at the end of this video I'm just laughing because I have been there and done that. It really is a head scratcher when you come across something like that.
How times havw changed, here we are watching this couple do random s--t.. like we don't have stuff to do? How we spend our valuable time.. bye Macky n Syd.
Good luck with ur new home but its time to do my own thing
Macky calling Bob DaDa… ❤️❤️❤️.
Ok enough play time. Back on the bikes. Maybe you can do a combo and practice bunny hopping your saw horses.
When a 3 hour project turns into a week long project.. yup been there
Heck yeah! You all are killing it! Keep it up, but definitely take some breaks between projects.
Just like when you'all are mountain biking, your ripping it up as usual !! I hope to ride with you'all someday!
i can be more awesome, but i’ll never be that awesome! you guys are killing it!!
I had to re wire some on our home here too.It took me a while to see what was wrong with it.After a week I got it done but I have no help so the going was very slow. But we have more room in our kitchen now and I still need to finish it this spring lol. It's going to be -40 degree here tonight. And you guess it no riding bicycle at this cold weather Brrrrrrr! The two of you and your help is a wonderful thing I wish the two of you the best of luck with your home.
If it went as excepted, where would the fun be in that. Thanks for the update.
I worked Commercial Construction for 10 years you did a great job and saved yourself lots of money 💰 by doing the work yourselves! Peace ✌️ and Love 💕 from Tucson Arizona Desert 🏜️. Safety 🦺 First ❤️
Love it! Demo is always unpleasant work ☹️ but you are making a house your home and that is super exciting😁 You are so fortunate to have such capable helpers! Loving forward to lots more reno vids. Best of luck to you both!
One team is tearing down a whole casa, while another team is buiding a casita elsewhere ... Competition !
You guys are so brave! I applaud your courage to break your house down to build it up just like you envision it! And your parents ROCK!
What a great adventure for you guys! Thanks for bringing us along on this journey.
Loved this! Can’t wait to see more videos of you turning your new house into a home. Godspeed.
Been there :) Glad to see you guys pushed through. Sometimes it's great to just sleep the fog of a long day off and re-approach the problem the next day. Looking forward to the next installment!
Good to see the diy spirit lives!
Every renovation is the same. You always find something that is like WTF what were they even thinking when they did that, from plumbing, electrical work or even just measuring something when you realise it is not straight at all. Just finished renovation of a kitchen myself and I can say very relatable 🤣. Had to replace entire electrical system because they ran everything with 2 wires (no Gnd) and new wires for the hob straight from the fuse box because the old ones were way too weak. So yeah a lot of work with jackhammer (EU house, brick and mortar, no drywall) to get the old wires out and make enough room for wire tubing, so if someone decides to replace later on, they can do it w/o opening the wall back up.
No drywall?! Jackhammer?! That is rough!
@@sydandmacky Well yeah, somewhere around 95% of the houses here in Slovenia are built from bricks. And since I am finishing my masters at the university I couldn't afford to pay someone to do it, so had to do it myself. And since I am studying electrical engineering, couldn't leave it like it was knowing how everything was wired. The first time you are doing it seems like a daunting task, but when you do it successfully on the first wall, you realise it is not that bad. It just looks scarry to have to open up the wall. It's only the closing up process that takes a while, because the mortar and plaster have to get dry enough so you can sand it down and make the final smooth pass.
A little tip in backing up small trailers open the back gate so you can see the trailer
Make sure you acquire a building permit and that your construction is up to code.
You guys never cease to amaze! Best of luck going forward!
Congratulations to all of you involved!, great progress!
We NEED MORE BOB!!!!
Appreciate the vehicular awesomeness of that manual transmission Chevy Aveo with a utility trailer!
So did the woman at the dump when we came with a load, she even commented on it 😂
who is Bob ? he is savage
you were super lucky the wall wasn't load bearing.
I bet this house was yours meant to be. congratulations. I am a new subscriber.
Bob is macky's dad 😊
I'm praying for you guys. I know it's rough because I've been through a similar remodel doing most of it myself with some family help.
looks like there's so much room for activities, excited to see how the rest of the reno goes.
Atta boy BOB!
Dude it's looking SO GOOD!
Looking good 👍
Well done to you and your family for getting so much work done.
I don't suppose I am the only one who finds electrical work scary. I only gave myself a shock once, and learned from that to take MUCH more care in future.....
Congrats, good to see things moving along.
Great job guys 👌🏾
good job guys love the teamwork ;)
What a lot of good work made 👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love this keep grinding guys
This was fun to watch cuz I've done at least 7 major house remodeling jobs including 2 complete new kitchens and lots of electrical work. I would never give advice here on youtube, and it looks like you have it all under control. I will say that UA-cam is you best friend. There are millions of house remodeling videos here. Good luck!!
Great job troubleshooting the electrical! If you ever run into that issue again, remember you don’t need a neutral (white) at the switch, so you could have used that 2-wire cable to run power to the switch and back (feed the switch on the white, back to the lights on black). Nothing wrong with what you did, just a time/money saver for next time. Love your vids guys,
So I've had a similar experience having to buy a house. 1.5 years ago my family lived in a mobile home park that under new ownership rezoned the residential section where 12 families lived to seasonal.
I was self employed and my wife was seasonal part time and the banks wouldn't lend us anything. After 2 years of failed buying attempts we got a house. I'm typing this because I lol'd at your kitchen light. A month ago I changed the kitchen light fixture and my daughters room above the kitchen was wired the same way as your livingroom. I've found live open junction boxes crammed with drywall mud, my hot water tank had only one element wired to 1 15amp breaker. There was such a mouse and bat problem that I found snake skins in areas of a rooms ceiling. And not one of the 5 or 4 baseboard heaters worked. At this point we are happy and safe though.
Soon you will have more stories to tell about this journey and I'm excited to watch and maybe advise a little. If the resemblance continues, you will be satisfied with life in due time. Good luck.
Edit: ps. Welcome to the "professional" homeowners association.
What?! No way! That is so crazy, but glad you were able to find and fix the issues. Hopefully we won't run into anything quite that crazy 🤞
I was just wondering where y’all been!! Awesome video!!
Cheap tyvek suits are a big help in avoiding the insulation itchies. :-) Looking good! Can't wait for the next episode, cheers!
I loved watching this video.
Best of luck.
I am so happy you guy have a home
OMG everybody needs a BOB in their life. He is awesome.x
Boy he sure is! Gets a little injury and keeps on pluggin along! This project is similar to Macky's Everesting effort he did....long way to go, but the efforts will be rewarded with pride and accomplishment!
Good job
You are doing amazing things guys 👏👏👏 ❤️ super awesome to see all together working in our own home 👏👏👏🏡 super excited for next vlog 🙏😎
You did extra great. Nice job and good team work. Take care and stay safe, Al
How incredibly satisfying to get there. And the space sure feels much more open and light. Well done!
Loved this video! Can’t wait for the next!
Me too! Love the Adventures of Syd & Macky!
Keep up the good work! Been there; done that. ALWAYS WEAR THE PPE!!! And thanks for the sticker I got today!!😃
Man tearing up the inside of a house you get to find mysterious things. And harmful things. I’m planning on upgrading my kitchen it’s a electrical mess. I bought my house off my family they rented it out and people tore it up .now I own it I have to fix all of it
Oh I'm following this. PS: Bob is "Da Man"
Loving this content. It's my dream one day to build my own house, granted it will probably end up being a renovation or just completing a basement that's unfinished, but I really enjoy this stuff even when it gets frustrating. Your house is looking amazing already, can't wait for more!
yep..switch wiring can be a super tricky thing. always good to get those lil blue books that have them all diagrammed out ..AND even then still difficult lol..good luck guys and keep it going.
First rule of home reno, destruction is fast, construction will always take 3-5 times longer than you think }:>
Retired electrician ⚡here, wish I lived closer to lend a hand 😁
No you can remote switch legs of a multi-wire branch circuit. The breaker poles must be switched together. It's against code to bury the junction boxes. And the way to route the power around like that would have been to use a 14/3 wire.
I've come across my fair share of rats nests of wiring jobs, during home renovations. But the one you two found takes the cake. Also you guys are doing a great job on your home renovation. Hope to see lots more of these types of videos.
Best one I ever saw was when the "electrician" rewiring a house rolled the hot and neutral in a couple places. Fried every electrical device in the house.
Love Bob - he's so much fun. #belikebob
Easiest way to back a trailer is to put your hand in the bottom center of the steering wheel then turn your hand the way you want the trailer to go. There’s my bit of unsolicited advice. Good luck with the renovation
Bob=Grandpa Strength
Get Bob a Demo hammer like the Stanley Fatmax Fubar :) he will have a good ol' time with that (Happy Smashing!)
Better hope there's no asbestos in there too, yuk! Interesting video
Home owner electrical job your working with there. I’m working on a similar project as well. Hidden J boxes behind cabinets. Circuits to nowhere in the kitchen. Under counter top outlets that were never finished. Enjoy the puzzle. Looks like your handling it well.
Only advice I’d give is to keep construction dust from getting in your furnace. Flames will bake the dust on and costly repairs will be in the future.
Ask me how I know $$$
Borrowing a moving van is always better than renting one :)
It was sort of renting except it was free because we bought the house through remax realty. So I said borrowed haha 🤣
Well done guys!!! #willrenoforburritos is your new #hashtag lol
As a master electrician part time mountain biker it’s absolutely hilarious watching mountain bikers try to do electric work 🤣 there’s nothing unsafe about the kitchen lights and living room plugs sharing a circuit, maybe not convenient? The bigger problem is why there’s 6 junction boxes in a 3 square foot space 🧐🤨 overloading IS a concern.hopefully you guys make it out alive….good luck!
Same circuit would have been fine, but they were on two different circuits that were not tied despite sharing a 12-3 wire 🤷♀️ 🤷♀️
Wow. American laws are so relaxed for DIY electrical. Up to a $40,000 fine in my state in Australia. Plus being also liable for damages and injury or deaths.
Wow 40,000 dollars!! 😬 Yikes! In NM you have to be a certified "homeowner electrician" and pass a test which Macky did. Not sure about other states
@@sydandmacky I think the most we can do is replacing outlets and light fixtures/switch. I’m not sure why our laws are so strict. Maybe too many injuries and deaths, or insurance and legal problems? I’m a cabinet maker and some builders won’t even let us pull an outlet through the back of a cupboard for a microwave. The house definitely looks better without the wall. Way more spacious and brighter.
Looks like what you might have run into was a 3 way switch.... pretty common when you want to use 2 different switches to control one set of lights.
Great job!!!! It would have taken me 2 weeks plus 3 more weeks of over run and 30 misleading UA-cam videos to do the same work.
This is awesome. Need some random riding clips scattered about the video. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA JK Congrats !
Damn, I feel so lazy after watching you guys work so hard all the time, lol. Nice job though, looking good!
From everyone I've talked to that's done a LA renovation, most of the older houses seem to require a complete electrical gut and rewire, but your place might be new enough that it isn't too bad (just the general sleazy corner cutting?). It's a shame that this is the norm though 😶
One of the houses we looked at was all 2 wire so we are doing better than that lol 🤣
@@sydandmacky Yeah one of my friends still has knob and tube (and he was finding random flammable stuff in the walls like newspaper). Oof. Glad you guys are taking the time to do it correctly 🙂
Love how your dad uses the wrong tool for the best job possible. #dadskills
Sort of electrical labyrinth for adventurers... Welcome ! 🤪
😂
Did you hook-up the attic fan? Would that cool the house better in the warm weather. We had one when I was a kid and loved it.
Not yet, but probably will sometime this spring.
Two important questions: 1. Will you be getting a VW Taos? 2. Have you heard the Taos Hum?
That wiring reminds me of a mess i found long ago. scary
watching this makes me feel that i dont want to take down my 1970s stucco ceiling to put up a flat one.who looks at the ceiling anyways
I will say the higher ceiling makes a huge difference in how the room feels and we are so glad we did it. But if you would be taking it down just to change the texture....might not be worth it because it was not so fun 🤷♀️
@@sydandmacky i also just drywalled and insulated my garage this fall. that enough plaster and fiberglass for a while. i hope to ride more and renovate less this spring. hahaha
I avoid Lowe’s unless it’s a last resort
#teamhomedepot
Are you putting more Recessed lights over the kitchen in the new drywall you put up?
Yes! The lights were already wired before we put up the drywall but we finished hanging drywall at 9pm so we cut the holes the next day haha
@@sydandmacky I figured but i had to ask!! Keep it coming, looks awesome!
You really missed a chance to charge all comers $1 pre sledgehammer swing,.The line might have gone around the block & you'd have met all your neighbors.
🤣🤣
Working above your head is the worst!!
I'm no structural engineer, but I'm pretty sure the "island" wall was load bearing (perpendicular to joists) hope I'm wrong!
Nope! We had a structural engineer friend check on it and then once we got the ceiling out it was actually pretty obvious as the joists weren't even sitting on the wall...about four inches above! Don't worry we were careful on this one 🤪
Generally unless trusses have extremely long spans or there are unique construction needs it is rare that they don't span from exterior wall to exterior wall.
